Moncton Wildcats: Draft Utopia
--------------------
He's so much better off of the puck than he is on it. If you want a player who will selflessly run head-first through a brick wall if that's what's necessary for his linemates to succeed, then look no further than Desnoyers. He plays an honest brand of hockey in the defensive zone and never flees a moment sooner than his team has secured the puck. -EliteProspects 2020 NHL Draft Guide

Oh god here we go with using mid-late picks as "Tough guy defensive specialists".

I think that is under selling him a bit from what I have seen.

He has some skill and a nice physical skill-set. It was kind of a shock this season that he did not get closer to P/GP.

Dont love the pick but he is kind of a "sleeper-ish" guy.

Oh cool, another glue guy big boy pants hustler. Gotta groom these kids to fill the timeless unwritten roles

Gone are the days of taking swings on speed and skill late in the draft huh

When's the last time the Flyers drafted for speed in later rounds?

Like whom?

Lindblom? His knock was skating. Laczynski? Not a fast skater. What’s your reference?

The funny part is these kids will never get a chance because they dont have the draft pedigree to make it through the system. I dont mind taking the swing, but these guys are gonna linger in Lehigh while we bring in Loui Erikkson for 'veteranness' instead of giving any of them a shot.

As long as he is smart and won’t hurt his team a pick like this in the 5th round is great. Depth guy with what sounds like real 4th line potential.

I think he is maybe more of a "swing" than might seem.

I guess he gets ~P/GP this season.

I would not have taken him here... but he was kind of buried this year.

Like I would not be shocked if a solid 3rd liner in 5 years. Even if I think some potential top six guys still left.

Straight line speed is the most overrated skill in hockey.
Rinaldo was fast, Grabner was fast, both spent most of their career on the 4th line.

While you don't want to field slugs anymore, pure speed really only comes into play on breakaways and catching up to breakaways - Myers might be the fastest Flyer chasing someone down, but he's not with a puck on his stick, nor is he the quickest or most agile.

Give me IQ, skill, compete, quickness and agility, and I'll live with average to above average speed.
Guys who anticipate and take the right angles play fast, guys who skate fast but are clueless play slow.

Excellent pick, his stats look bad compared to his peers because he was on the 3rd line of one of the best CHL teams the last two years. When half the team was gone to their respective world jr camps in december he lit it up with the increase in ice time and PP time. He should have a very good year with Halifax considering he's finally getting the opportunities to play more minutes. Good value in the 5th round for sure.

Realistically, Appleyard, there might be a few with top 6 potential, but also serious flaws that make it unlikely they ever reach that potential, or they'd be long gone.

I mean when you get past #100 or so, there are maybe less than a half dozen top six forwards/top 4 defensemen that come out of any draft - 1 or 2 per round from rounds 4-7.

For sure. Guys like Novak, Francis and Pashin have risk. But Wisdom and Desnoyers do too!

But I also feel there are some high % bottom sixers too. Guys who are closer with slightly higher ceilings. Oskar Magnusson for example.

I dont dislike either pick!

I don’t mind the pick. Seen a couple videos of him during the season and all I can say is I’m neutral on it. Would’ve much rather traded up earlier and drafted Martin Chromiak

When's the last time the Flyers drafted for speed in later rounds?
Millman, a smooth skating puck mover, went in the 4th last year. Serdyuk and Brodzinski went in the 5th and 7th

Wyatt Wylie was a 6th rounder I think in 2018

2017 they picked Kalynuk, who chicago is going to love, in the 7th and Lyksell who is now seeing top minutes in the 5th or 6th

All not floor guys. Half of this year's picks were floor guys, including both mid-later round picks

Interesting take, let's see how he does in the top 6 this season if it happens/lasts
