Weird situation with McDonagh.

The problem with Zuccarello is the market is oversaturated in wingers. Nash moved. Kane is still available. Another rental. Pacioretty is available. One more season left on his contract. He has had a bad year. Montreal wants a ton for him. Hoffman is available. Ottawa wants a lot for him. He is signed for two more years. The Red Wings have Nyqvist and Tatar available for the right price. Skinner could become available in the summer. He has one more year remaining on his contract. JVR will be a free agent this summer. Scott Burnside has a podcast on the Dallas Stars website. Pierre LeBrun and Chris Johnston are his guests on the recent podcast. Johnston said a GM told him JVR would be the top free agent rental if the Leafs were selling. The Leafs would like to re-sign him but he is not giving any hometown discounts.

Where are all of these players going?

If the Rangers have an offer they like for Zuccarello, maybe they should take it instead of waiting until the summer. Winnipeg.

Will the offers get better in the summer? Scott Howson was a guest on the 31 Thoughts podcast. Columbus could have made the same trade for Nash at the 2012 deadline. Howson said he needed more time to think about the deal. Howson was waiting for the Rangers to blink. The Rangers didn't budge from the offer. They weren't giving up Kreider or Stepan or McDonagh or even DZ in the Nash deal. It was Dubinsky and AA. Erixon and a draft pick. The same components.

How many teams are in the market for McDonagh? Will those teams change? He is signed for just one more season. McDonagh is also injured. Who knows what's going on there. Does the health issue hurt his value? If you're trading for McDonagh, you want assurances he is healthy. Why trade for an injured player?

What is with McDonagh, "I don't know how you want me to answer that, Stan. He's a player on our team right now and we are trying to get him back healthy."

Are you exploring the market for McDonagh, "I'll say this, I don't think it's the right thing to do to say about an individual player whether we are trying to trade him or not. We have enough things going on in that room right now that besides naming the guys and who could go where. We keep that between us and if something happens, we will let you know."

What Jeff Gorton said on Sunday

Then Gorton makes a comment about not being a popular figure in the room right now. WTF. Gorton kept saying he will do what's best for the organization. Translation. f*** these spoiled brats. McD hasn't played since the letter. The Rangers asked him for his 10 team NTC list. McDonagh was playing hurt. He was dreadful in his last game against Boston which is when Gorton and Sweeney had a face to face meeting about Nash. He was 50/50 to go on the Winnipeg and Minnesota trip. 50/50 for this trip two weeks later. Is Ryan throwing a hissy fit? Here I am playing hurt and these guys in management pulled the plug on the season.

I know the popular theory is wait until the summer. Will the offers get better? Will more teams be interested? McDonagh and Zuccarello have just one season remaining on their contracts. The Rangers don't seem interested in giving them contract extensions.

Gorton is on the right track. He just needs to continue selling off players and planning for a better tomorrow which doesn't include any big time acquisitions to accelerate the rebuild. None of this rebuild on the fly nonsense.

The Rangers are playing with fire if they try to play a waiting game with McDonagh and Zuccarello. They are two of the best pieces on the market right now and if the Rangers have legitimate offers they should not overplay their hand. The D market could become saturated in the summer if Karlsson stays in Ottawa until the draft and OEL becomes available from Arizona. McDonagh would be the 3rd best option.

Same thing with Zuccarello. If the Rangers get their price, they should pull the trigger tomorrow.

Need more trades. Getting a few picks in the 25-90 range isn't a rebuild. Statistically we have only about a 50-50 chance of getting a guy like another Jesper Fast (value, not style). 50%. And 50% we get a bust or a borderline NHLer (e.g., Kampfer). That's not a rebuild of our future, that's a rebuild of our prospect poll, which will now be more exciting, but the current trades won't lift the team out of the gutter.

Need to trade MZA and McD for big-time young assets, can't stop with a couple B prospects and 3 later picks, the highest of which is still not lottery. We need either a couple lottery picks or a ton of later firsts and seconds. One extra first is a setup for a disappointment.

No team is giving a lotto pick for a year of Zucc or McDonagh. You know how this team will get more lotto picks? They're going to need to miss the playoffs.

We got #7 for a long term asset in Stepan. The guys who would return a lotto pick are guys you probably won't move: Kreider and Zibanejad.

We need swings at the draft board. We've got 6 meaningful shots in the draft. Our 4th might be a top 100 pick as well.

After this draft, we'll have 2 lotto picks in the past two years. Depending on how next season goes, it might be 3.

If you can get another first for McDonagh or Zucc from a contender, you could package picks and move up in the draft this year. That's the only way.

That's fine, but then give us a bunch of later picks so we can take seversl stabs at boom/bust kids. But one late first won't do the trick.

so why not trade Lundqvist? I doubt Zucc will fetch an amazing return, I rather just hold on to him and re-sign him to another bargain contract.

It was mentioned in the thread that SJS is interested in E.K.

Swedish New York based blogger/journalist Per Bjurman wrote in his live blogg
from the NYR-DET game that according to Californian insiders SJS thinks that
Sens wants to much for EK and the SJS therefore might be interested in RMcD instead.

Mer Melkman-rykten:
Sharks vill ha Erik K – jävlar, det skulle bli en lång flight imorrn; de har Oilers
hemma på tisdag! – men tycker priset är för högt och kommer istället att gå för Ryan McDonagh.

I don't think the Sharks have the assets to get Ek or McD
Also McD didn't play tonight they might be scouting someone else (Mik Green?)

Sharks don’t have the assets for McDonagh

Weight said they would be open to a hockey trade, which this would be, but I’m not seeing it

Only guys of interest that would fit the rebuild is Meier and LeBanc, and I don’t think Weight moves them

San Jose’s farm team isn’t great. No young prospects to be excited about atm

One reason our prospect pool is not as good as it could have been is that we keep forgetting that you only need 2 goalies and 6 defensemen in the lineup, but 12 forwards. So we keep drafting, trading, signing for a lot of goalie and defensemen prospects while not accumulating enough forward prospects. And I already see 3 trades that we just made, (4 if you count Stepan, 5 if you count Puempel trade) that involved us settling for a defenseman prospect. And we wasted so many more of our draft picks drafting some obscure goalie and defensemen prospects like Calle Sjalin or 20 yearold Brandon Crawley or Calle Andersson or Daniel Walcott, etc.

Can we please stop we this topic? If you managed to find this message board you are probably above average when it comes to hockey knowledge and should know about Hank and his contract.

Your optimism is admirable but I invite you to visit the main boards.

There was a time that we didn't have any goalie prospects. It's true though, we haven't drafted many high end forwards.

The biggest issue is that we have been trading away draft picks like crazy and secondarily, because we have been drafting low due to always making the playoffs. Times are a changing. We're rebuilding and we'll be keeping and adding picks. We took two forwards last year in the first round. Hopefully we can add a high end winger.

They’re dead set on attaching Ryan’s contract with him. Which is why his value will be low. Who wants to take Ryan’s 7.5M cap hit? They can’t just waive Ryan either. Karlsson is being used as bait to get someone to take Ryan off their hands so they don’t have to pay him.

I wonder if the Senators would move down from 3 to 7 in return for us taking Ryan.
