It's actually worse. He turns 31 in January.

Exactly. He’ll be 31 at the start of the first year of his deal. 8.8M per. Defense wasn’t Vegas’ problem. They had good defense and team defense. They couldn’t score on Vancouver and couldn’t score against Dallas, despite really outplaying both teams. Now they’re 7M over the cap and every GM in the league knows it. No ones doing them any favors. They’ll pay to get compliant, and in the end, what they give up versus what Pietrangelo adds may not add up to be a positive.

BTW, take pride, HFNYR. Our bonus cushion issue is so significant it prompted CapFriendly to update its presentation:

It's probably more a factor of knowing they already have Zibanejad, Strome, Chytil and Howden at center, with Barron and even Khodorenko also getting a look.

Maybe not an issue if there's several million sitting around. But under the current circumstances? Might not have been their preference.
I guess thats my issue... I think Howden is absolutely terrible at the center position and its requirements and I also dont see Chytil as a center. Even if he can make it happen, I dont see him as a PKer who can take faceoffs. Strome falls into that same boat of Chytil. Barron and Khodorenko are unknowns. Barron is more of a winger anyway.

So to go into the season with such a pivotal position (in every sense of the word) with a bunch of question marks, really square peg round hole, is a poor evaluation of your roster. You need guys who can win defensive draws and PK. We do not have that. Zibanejad PKing is an abuse of his workload as our 1C

Holy Amnesty Buyout Batman! That's definitely something GM and KM will have to clean up in 3-4 years.

@haveandare Vegas is an underrated city from what I've heard. People who go there and stay out of the casino areas love it.

Still have to sign ADA, Strome, Lemieux and Georgiev. $13-15M.

who did you want them to sign?

well Strome we don’t want to sign so say you gave DeAngelo 5.5 to 6 mil. You’ve got plenty of money for the other two. We’ve fine.

I think the bonus issue is being blown out of proportion.

It's something to be weary of but its not that severe.
It’s severe enough not to sign anyone we can’t bury and walk from one of Strome or ADA if their arb figures add up to be more than say 10 mil. It could also impact who makes the team in Kratvsovs case because his bonus is an additional 850k against the cap. We’ll have another 4-5 mil in dead cap space if you want to look at it that way but it’s a good problem to have given the young talent.

Strome will get signed one way or another. Even at 1year/$5M.

We could eat half his salary and ship him off. A contending team would eat that up IMO

So the Rangers will have $4.8MM in space with 22 players signed if Geo, ADA, Lemiuex and Strome cost $14MM combined.

This includes Bitetto, PDG, Rooney and Blackwell (based off cap friendly)
Was just noticing the same thing. Unless they're preparing for ADA and Strome to come in at like $7MM each, they DO have SOME room.

Not a lot, but enough to do some interesting things...

Vegas almost $7m over right now. They will empty the cupboard just shedding contracts.

Capfriendly tweeted they need to shed salary before NHL registers their contract I believe. Whatever Schmidt deal is theorized, it should be forthcoming.

I'm guessing Schmidt to Boston. They need a defensemen and can do the deal without sending any money back.
I’m guessing the Florida rumor we heard was a handshake, but that turned ugly once Pietrangelo stalled overnight. I’m guessing we see Schmidt to Florida within hours.

Edit: Welp, nm.

No problem with that deal if I’m Vegas. Their window is right now. You make those contracts and deal with the bad years once your window is closed.

I think there will be some buyers for Schmidt so he may not come as cheap as many think. Also is he better than ADA? I'm not so sure of that. He may fit better but not sure we make out to great if those moves occur.
