Yep. I just checked and lo and behold, his coach that year was Randy Carlyle. Maybe we're onto something. Maybe Babcock is a genius. Maybe coaching matters.
Seems to me that JVR probably has specific talents that can be exploited to the maximum benefit of his team, if only he had a competent person to deploy him in such a role. Like maybe you put him on PP1 to start the year and don't staple him/Giroux to Robert Hagg.
Anyway, there are HUGE swings in GAR year to year.

This is a guy considered one of the most consistent and depandable D-men in the league. Two-win swings year to year is huge.
I don't know enough about how GAR is calculated or how reliable it is, but I'd take very large swings over short samples with a grain of salt.
