Rob Zepp NHL debut and win at age 33

I believe he is the oldest goaltender to debut since the 70's. And the oldest goalie to win their debut since 1926. This is quite an inspiring story. Goes to show that if you keep working hard you might one day accomplish your dreams no matter how long it takes!

It’s been a rather unorthodox journey for Zepp to the NHL.

Zepp played for the Plymouth Whalers for three seasons in the OHL. He was drafted by the Atlanta Thrashers in the fourth round in 1999 but never signed with the team. He was then drafted by the Carolina Hurricanes in 2001 – fourth round, 11 spots lower than in 1999 – and toiled in the ECHL and AHL from 2001-05.

Then it was off to Europe: SaiPa in SM-liga in Finland, followed by a seven-year stint with Berlin in the German ice hockey league.

Remember him playing for Finnish SaiPa. Jussi Markkanen, Niklas Bäckström, Iiro Tarkki and now Zepp have progressed to feature at NHL level after their initial SaiPa breakthough during my time of following which started in somewhere around season 1997-1998.

33-year-old #Flyers G Rob Zepp is the oldest goalie to win his NHL debut since 41-year-old Hugh Lehman on Nov 17, 1926

This isn't incorrect, but it's kind of misleading. Hugh Lehman had a Hall of Fame career in the PCHA, which was a major league. When he came to the NHL in 1926, it was more or less like changing conferences. He had already played (and won) quite a few games against NHL teams during the playoffs by that time.

This would be like if the eastern conference somehow went bankrupt and disappeared, and the west survived as a new league called the WHL, and 80 years from now there was a stat about how Martin Brodeur didn't make his WHL debut until age 42. Technically true, but a really weird way to think about it.

I recall him giving interviews in German actually.

I remember seeing Zepp back in his ECHL days when he played for the Florida Everblades. Fun fact: the Canes drafted him ahead of some of the following goalies: Martin Gerber, Cristobal Huet, and Mike Smith.

Probably still the right choice, all things considered. Best NHL winning % by far.

Atta boy Zepp! Got the win. Played decent outside of the first 10 mins, which is to be expected. Made a clutch toe save late in the third to preserve a 3-3 tie and eventually get the game to overtime. Guy looked so happy in his post game interview. Great to see!

:handclap:

He won the game for Philly....made a sick toe save on Schiefele with 20 seconds to go in the 2nd to keep it from being 4-1 Jets.
