Rob Schremp -overrated?

I never understood why Oiler fans were so high on Schremp, yet almost completely ignore Cogliano. Comments?

Schremp is the flashier player so he's naturally going to attract all the attention. There is no doubting the kid has world class skills, he'd be a future All-Star if he could skate worth a damn. I've been incredibly high on Cogliano since day one though, I love the kid's potential and he has put up some great numbers at Michigan this year despite being stuck behind Hensick in the lineup (which was consequently taking away a ton of his powerplay time prior to him getting boosted up to the first unit).

I have a feeling the WJCs will be Cogliano's chance to shine. It's obviously impossible to criticize Sutter after the job he did over the past couple years but it was a little frustrating to watch him keep sticking out the same struggling powerplay units time after time while Cogliano was stuck on the bench. I look forward to seeing how he plays now that he should be more of a focal point in the offence, he's a solid playmaker and it sounds like his shot has improved this year.

Downie-Boyd-? were a great line that were producing. I don't see any problem with it.

Cogliano had alot of bad games, and the overall tournament was average. But the little things you saw him do in the game bode very well for his future. I almost feel dirty in saying that I'm more high on Cogliano then most Oiler fans.

Makes plays out of nothing, has an on-ice instinct to go into areas where he can make plays, can find holes on the ice and can fill them, great skating. Inconsistant last year, but consistancy comes with age.

Downie-Boyd-? were a great line that were producing. I don't see any problem with it.

The Boyd line was certainly producing. However, Canada's powerplay was pretty bad from what I remember and Sutter kept tossing out the same units time and time again. Then again, I believe those units ended up scoring a couple goals against Russia so that somewhat validated his approach I suppose.

What intrigued me about Cogliano (and a few other Oilers fans as well) is the potential for him to be a solid defensive player. He seems to have the speed and intelligence to be able to play an effective two-way game which could make him a very valuable player if his offence continues to grow. It should be a fun tournament to watch this year, Flames and Oilers fans will likely have to come together and cheer for a team that includes both Irving and Cogliano.

I'm also interested to see Dan Ryder in this tournament, I think he'll make it. With such a complete game and better offense, I expect Ryder to take over the tournament moreso then Boyd did last year.

Never considered the defensive side of the puck, but I'm sure he's getting valuable trainging in Michagan, a strong program. He can certainly be multi-dimentional to grow his game, and seems to have the character to do so.

Cogliano doesn't have better instincts then Schremp. The only thing that Cogliano has over Schremp is that fact that he can skate like the wind.

And how all of sudden are people now comparing Schremp to Allison or Perrault?

There is a good reason right there why Schremp is overrated.

Cogliano has speed, two-way ability, faceoffs, and his skating. Schremp is a fancier player, but Cogliano is the superior prospect. That speaks to how I like Cogliano, and how I dislike Schremp.

His attitude hasn't been a problem for a number of years, the media simply printed so many stories that Schremp's "attitude problems" became almost mythical in nature. What worries me about Schremp is both his skating ability and his play away from the puck - he'll be a very good powerplay specialist in the NHL with the tools he has but I'm not sold on him being solid 5on5 yet. We'll see though, I'm glad Schremp is facing a little adversity early in the season and it sounds like Richards is really pointing out the areas he has to work on. Pouliot just got called up from Wilkes-Barre and I believe Christensen is still in Pittsburgh so I'm guessing Schremp will go on a pretty big streak points-wise soon.

It's not mythical, the kid is a hothead.
