A Stanley Cup Champion, Norris Trophy winner and one of the best defensemen to ever play the game, Rob Blake, will join the NHL's Hockey Operations Department as a manager, the National Hockey League announced today.

Blake will work with Senior Executive Vice President of Hockey Operations Colin Campbell and his staff on all aspects of the game. He will work closely with hockey executives on the Club level and be involved with the Competition Committee and the NHL's summer Research and Development Camp.

ps: move to nhl talk if you think it's more appropriate there.

AIUI, he's working out of his "office" in California, not back in Manhattan, nor Toronto, in the league offices.

This could be a move to add some league footprint to the west coast as well.

Been an open secret for about four months, IIRC. :sarcasm:

Does he have a connection to Shanny or how did he get this gig?

My guess, mutual respect. Guessing they played a few ASGs together.

A little insight into Blake's duties

Blake wasn’t real specific about his new NHL duties, but he hopes it will be West Coast-oriented and increase the league’s presence on the California side of the continent, adding a little more geographic diversity. Monthly visits to the War Room in Toronto are part of what he’ll be doing, too, working in hockey operations.

Blake looking to provide more of a league awareness of teams on the west coast.

In its eagerness to develop a following in Europe, the NHL overlooked an audience closer to home: its Western Conference.

Western teams routinely jump time zones on winding trips and are stuck with less experienced referees working their games. NHL executives often attend games in the East but rarely venture past the Hudson River. Players feel overlooked by fans, league officials and the media.

Former Kings defenseman Rob Blake, the NHL's new hockey operations manager, can't change all of that. But as the first hockey operations executive based outside league headquarters, he hopes to give a voice to players who toil beyond the Eastern power axis.

Pretty good read. I guess it won't hurt to give the West a bone or two now and then.

In all seriousness, I like how the NHL has taken in some of these older respected guys and didn't really give them anything big but having them around gives knowledge to guys like Gary of what its like and who knows, maybe someday, they'll be smart enough on the business side of things in 15 years to be Commish and make money for the owners but still be respectful of players rights etc...
