Since the NHL started recording TOI in 1997-98, there have been 991 instances of forwards playing over 27:02 in a regular season game.

In short: no, it is not a record.

The most TOI played in a regular season game since 1997-98 is 30:00 by Slava Kozlov of the Atlanta Thrashers in a match against the New York Rangers on October 16, 2003.

The second-most is 29:59 by Alexei Yashin of the Ottawa Senators in a match against the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim on December 28, 1998.

Mark Recchi also played 29:59 with the Montreal Canadiens in a match against the Boston Bruins on October 29, 1998.

Ilya Kovalchuk has logged over 27:02 in a regular season match 57 times, the most being 29:53.

Last season, there were 8 instances of players logging over 27:02 in a game: 4 by McDavid, 2 by Barkov, 1 by Seguin, 1 by Couturier. Last season's single-game high was 28:55 by Barkov on November 14, 2017 against Dallas.

Impressive in todays league (though maybe not for Edmonton) but not a record. Since ice time started being officially tracked, Sakic has the record among forwards in a regular season non-OT game with 29:57 against Calgary in 2000. There's a bunch of games in the 29 minute range, but I'm too lazy to weed out the OTs.

Kovalchuk played a number of games around 27 with New Jersey, averaging nearly 25 minutes a game and Bure almost averaged 27 minutes a game in 2001 with 26:52

Coyotes Bandwagon
... and EDM lost 3:0.

What gives? Does Todd McLellan do this often? Did another center get injured? Were the other centers just crap last night?

What is so impressive about a forward playing/hanging around for over 27 minutes and not putting up a single Point.More
embarrassing than impressive.

Didn’t Kovalev play 27:01 in one shift?

Yeah, such a different league with the ice time.

NHL.com - Stats

Looking at some of the stats, and then Jaroslav Svejkovsky pops up as a guy who averaged 1 minute of ice time per shift, but only 13 shifts per game, in 97-98.

Don't think that will happen anytime soon.
RNH is an Assistant Captain on his team. His coach trusts him with tough assignments and zone starts.
Matthews doesn't even have a letter. Babcock would not trust him with more minutes; your leaders should be out there.

Yeah, that's totally the reason why. He's the best offensive and defensive forward on the team, but Babcock doesn't play anyone more than 20 minutes a game except maybe Leo Komarov once last year.

Why burn out your top player in the regular season? Not like the leafs are in danger of missing out if he doesn’t play him a tonne.

If McDavid doesn’t play a lot the oilers might not make it. Have to get to the playoffs before you can worry about the state of your players when you get there.

RNH- Really Needs HockeyPlayingTime.

In all seriousness this shows how important the Nuge is to the Oilers, between him and Drai I don't know who is the 2nd most important forward for the Oilers.

Poor offensive depth...

Nuge plays on the 1st line with Mcdavid. #1pp. Pks, and will double shift anytime Todd needs him to.
