I'd want more than Reinhart if I'm the CanesThinking out loud if Buffalo wants a shutdown D what about something around Reinhart and Pesce?
Why? Edmonton needs an offensive quarterback and Buffalo a great defensive-minded defenceman?
Larsson plays difficult minutes as well, and has done so on piss poor teams more often than not. The difference is that one of the two players doesn't cost his team goals on a regular basis when he is on the ice.Sounds like you could try taking your own advice there. Risto is a victim of playing more and more difficult minutes than he ideally should on a piss-poor team, and has been his entire career to date. I have watched Larsson (obviously not as much as Oiler fans, but I've watched him enough to form an opinion), and he leaves me unimpressed every time.
Brutal for the SabresRamsus Ristolainen
Sam Reinhart
for
William Nylander
Nikita Zaitsev
Marleau - Matthews - Reinhart
Hyman - - - Tavares - - - Marner
Johnsson - - Kadri - - - Kapanen
Leivo/Ennis - Lindholm - Brown
Gardiner - - - - Rielly
Hainsey - Ristolainen
Borgman - - Dermott
- - - - -
Skinner - - - Eichel - - - Okposo
Sheary - - Nylander - Mittelstadt
Sobotka - - Berglund - Rodrigues
Wilson - Grigensons - Pominville
Dahlin - - - Zaitsev
McCabe - Scandella
Beaulieu - Bogosian
Leafs downgrade their offence and take on a project in Ristolainen, who would have the opportunity to develop his game under Babcock, especially playing with Coach Hainsey. Reinhart is like an upgraded version of Brown/Hyman imo which would work well with Matthews.
The Sabres get Willy and a stable Dman in Zaitsev. Willy and his brother can be line mates over the course of the next few years
Having watched Buffalo quite a lot the past couple of years, it's evident that Ristolainen lacks the speed and defensive awareness to handle first pairing duties, at least on a team like the Sabres.
What they need is a defensive stalwart who can eat 25 minutes of simple shut-down hockey - being the safety net for Dahlin to learn from and solve mistakes for.
How about something like Ristolainen for A.Larsson + 2nd?
Could benefit both teams. Dahlin gets a Swedish mentor, Edmonton gets their PP-defenceman.
Thoughts?
Larsson is still the better player though
Risto is more talented and provides more grit than Larsson.
This is not a trade I would consider

Ristolainens best days are ahead of him, not moving that for Larsson
Very few players in the entire NHL provide more grit than Larsson. You outed yourself as someone who knows nothing about him.

your capping Ristos ability as strictly offensive, which is wrong. Sorry, not a good deal.Adam is 2 years older.
And defensive defencemen have longer lives than offensive.
I didnt say Larsson doesnt provide grit .. its just not at the level of Risto ...
I'd want more than Pesce.I'd want more than Reinhart if I'm the Canes

if Larsson is average, Risto is below averageRisto will have a monster year, ridiculous to trade him for a mediocre Swede

That's a pretty ridiculous metric to use considering like 3 Sabres have reached that mark in the last 6 years.Maybe he can break 50% CF for once in his career or not get outscored by 20+ goals at ES before we talk about his defensive ability?
Right now he only brings above average results on the PP, his ES minutes are ugly.
