Hey guys, Wings fan coming in peace to ask about how Riley Sheahan looks this year.

As someone who always thought he had the potential and physical tools to be a lot better than he was, I thought last year’s decent season would be a nice stepping stone in getting him back to a good 3rd line center, but it seems like the same mental funk he got two years ago is happening again.

How does he look and who is he playing with? Is he at least still good defensively?

He had a great season as the 3C last year, but Rutherford got greedy and insisted on having better than a great 3C in the 3C spot. That's when they acquired Brassard, who has been a dud for the most part. Sheahan had a bad start to this year, but has really turned it up recently, to the point where he should be playing 3C over Brassard right now.

The "mental funk" that's going on with him right now is him playing 4th line minutes with absurdly defensive deployment, he's not going through a slump like he did in Detroit. It's not really hard to guess why he's struggling to produce when he's getting 25% offensive zone start% and about 10:30 at ES per game with bleh linemates.

He’s.. there.

Both this year and last year he has an issue of just being there. We had Brandon Sutter before and Sheahan has a lot of his qualities of vanilla.

He looked good last year with Jake Guentzel and Phil Kessel. But, I’d hope any NHL center would look good with two 60+ point wingers on either side.

He does a good job on the PK, he has a decent enough offense ability. But, I don’t think it is mental, it is effort.

That being said he has streaks where he looks amazing. Last year in Game 6 of the Flyers series he was the best player on the ice in a game where Jake Guentzel has 4 goals. Last night against the Caps he was incredible.

He’s an NHLer, not sure he is an NHLer on a team with championship aspirations. Just due to what his cap will likely be.

We paid nothing for him and without Cullen here I’d be fine with him being our 4C. Also would be fine if they let him walk / moved him for a 3rd.

He looked like shit until last night. Last night he looked like a completely different player. Someone added viagra to his gatorade.

Good PK guy. Also like someone said he was gelling well last year until the Brass trade forced him to have different/lesser linemates
He's also the first guy to get the nod from Sully whenever they need a key draw won in the defensive end.

Sheahan kind of reminds me of a bigger Nick Spaling. Solid defensively, can PK, and can chip in offensively on occasion. But otherwise, seems very vanilla the majority of the time.

Having said that, last year's Sheahan was more effective than this year's version.

I just wish he had a bit more of a physical game. I don't mean fighting and throwing huge hits. But just a heavy game where he works the other team's defense along the boards and is tougher to move from the front of the net. For a guy who is 6'3 and around 215 lbs., he plays more like he's about 6'0 and 185 lbs.

Sheahan's been up and down as a Penguin and recently he's been more down. I'm a big fan of what he can do but this season his defensive solidity has been missing in action while his uncanny ability to hit the ironwork more often than the net has been back in swing.

Riley had a decent season last year. This year he hasn't been good. We all wish he could play with the intensity that he showed last night. Probably his best game of the season on both sides of the ice.

He played last night like someone threatened to send him to the minors if he didn't make an impact. Unfortunately, that might be the only game this year he played like that. Most games this season he's done the minimum necessary to not be one of the three worst guys on the ice. Last year, it looked like he was turning it around, but he's back to punching a time clock again.

I think Nick Spaling was consistently better than this year's Sheahan. Spaling did enough to not ever be identified as a problem. Sheahan's only doing enough to not be scratched--and he's only barely over that threshold most days.
