Thinking about our drafts from the Cup year on until about 2011, man....

A blind monkey with a pen could have drafted better.

6 drafts and the best players were like Brandon Sutter and Skinner.

All credit to JR for the Cup but he couldn't hit water from a boat in those years

Just the 2008 draft by itself is actually kind of hilarious.

2006 we were coming off a Cup, without the 1st that we spent to help ensure that Cup. It was gonna be a bad draft from the get-go.

2007 was actually passable. About average for most teams in most draft years.

2008 and 2009 gutted the franchise. After a good 2010 that was undermined by Andersen’s refusal to sign, we needed a lot more than we got from 2011. That fruitless block of drafts is a big part of why things went so badly from 2013-16, especially missing on Karlsson who would have completely altered the trajectory of the franchise.

This brings me pain. We had such high hopes.

Bowman ‘already has an nhl caliber wrist shot’

The front office was so excited to get two first round talents with Boychuck and Dalpe.

Then the only decent players we drafted refused to sign/got traded for Jordan Staal along with a top ten pick that could have been Trouba or Forsberg or Teravainen.

The only reason I even tolerate the Paradis pick is that they we able to flip him for Tlusty. But man, was that an awful pick.

Pronman had a write-up of this trade.

1) He said "sources around the league" believe the Canes and Hofmann were unable to agree on contract terms.
2) He thinks Hofmann's game will translate well to the NHL based on his skill and skating.
Don't understand tho why we got a D for the trade. I mean, it was not like he was coming over to play here, so it's better to get a pick for him than just let him rot in the pool. Not expecting an A, but maybe C? Columbus got a B for the trade.

It's a value-based grade. Pronman thinks Hofmann is more valuable than a 7th rounder.

One perspective is: the Canes received a 7th round pick and gave something of higher value, therefore they did poorly (D).

Another perspective would be to say they did OK since they got a 7th round pick for an asset they no longer had plans for.

One question I would followup with Pronman on would be, if Hofmann is as good as he says, why was their not a stronger trade market for him bidding up the price.

I'm guessing that Promnan's view of Hofmann's potential is not widely held in the league.

Yeah, that's kind of like the Fox trade. We gave up a fantastic defenseman for a couple of 2nd round picks, so Fox > two 2nds. Yet, we had no chance of signing Fox, so we got two 2nds for something we didn't have a chance at.

It's kind of hard to evaluate a player like that and what would be an appropriate amount to get in a trade. How do you legitimately argue that he's worth much more when he hasn't done it in the NHL or say the KHL? How much can you expect Swiss league scoring to translate to the NHL? Also, he was drafted so long ago you can't expect him to have much of any trade value at this point since he's mostly unproven.

Saw on CBJ board they'd like to get Hofmann over this year but the timing of their season (plus his team making the playoffs) may keep that from happening. I'm actually intrigued to see if he can do it over here. I know he came to camp a time or two but I guess he always wanted NHL or nothing. Glad we got something for him though.

National League: Grégory Hofmann – noch ein Jahr Zug, dann in die NHL

Exactly. He wants a one way deal. Quality players like him with a Swiss passport or license can make a lot of money in Switzerland so of course he had zero desire to risk AHL bus rides for shabby money.

In order to sign him, Carolina would have had to commit to that early because with no transfer agreement in place between the two leagues, he only could have signed with the Canes when on an expiring contract in Switzerland.

Last August (see the article), after the transfer agreement was signed, his agent announced that Hoffman is finally looking to sign in the NHL. He said that the Canes weren't interested in giving him that one way contract but that they'd agree to a trade should another team want him. That happened now. Apparently it was Rick Nash who wanted Hofmann. Nash played with Hofmann in Davos and is now a special assistant to GM Kekalainen.

Good on the Canes though for agreeing to trade his rights if another team was willing to offer him...though they could have also just released his rights and let him do whatever lol But really, the only difference is we got an asset by holding his rights and agreeing to let him look around

He'll be crawling back to us soon enough.

How? He's gonna sign with Columbus and either make it or return to Switzerland. Don't think there's anything between for him because of his age and because he's clearly not interested in playing AHL.

Maybe another "random" injury would make him a little more cooperative.

Again, how? The Bluejackets have his rights and are gonna sign him. If it works out for him, great. If it doesn't, he'll return to Switzerland. He's not gonna play in the AHL and should he not make it with the Bluejackets, I doubt some other team is gonna hand him a spot on their roster.
