A few Pearson award voting results, courtesy of Sanf:

1980:
1) Marcel Dionne — 147 votes
2) Wayne Gretzky — 114 votes
3) Guy LaFleur, Tony Esposito — 35 votes each

1986:
1) Mario Lemieux — 136 votes
2) Wayne Gretzky — 107 votes
3) Paul Coffey
4) Larry Robinson

1988:
1) Mario Lemieux — 182 votes
2) Wayne Gretzky — 56 votes
3) Steve Yzerman — 45 votes

Sources: 1980, 1986, 1988

I don't feel we know enough about the Pearson award at this point to add these numbers to the sticky though.

Excellent. I've included the figures in the Award & All-star Voting sticky in the respective seasons. If you can dig up other years too they will be added as well.

Wow. Jari Kurri, who understandably appeared on just one Hart ballot in his entire career, finished top-three in Pearson voting. I wish we had the vote totals for that one, because I can't imagine more than one or two people thought he was the most outstanding player in the league.

That 1987 article does say something curious:

The Argus-Press said:
Only two players - former Boston defenseman Bobby Orr, the Pearson award's first winner in 1971, and current Philadelphia Flyers General Manager Bobby Clarke - have been honored by their peers on three occasions.

Didn't Esposito win in 1971, an didn't Orr and Clarke only win once each? They're not confusing the Pearson with the Hart, are they? The voting totals are different though (255/95 Hart; 254/60 Pearson) which suggests that those are the 1987 Pearson results.

Agree on both calls. The AP writer does confuse Hart and Pearson finishes in his write-up, but the voting result with the figures presented are those of the 1987 Pearson.

I still find using Control-F on page 5 of this thread is easier for finding a player's full record than the new, better sorted thread.

What do you suggest to improve the new thread? Maybe an individual overview of results for each player, covering everything we got on him?

I would also suggest two of my threads from June 2015:

Hart trophy (99.0% complete historical data) - http://hfboards.mandatory.com/showthread.php?p=104445799
Norris trophy (99.8% complete historical results) - http://hfboards.mandatory.com/showthread.php?t=1916371

The obvious downside is I've only posted the results for players with at least a 5% vote share. Thus, seasons where a player only receives a small number of trivial votes would be excluded and there might be some useful information lost as a result but it's (hopefully) a good resource for those looking for "significant" voting finishes.

That could work, but without an automatic database like hockey-reference, would be incredibly time consuming.

Fitting all the data on a single page would be one option, though the current software only allows a max of 25 posts per viewable page

One of the interisting things is that Sporting News had/has? also players poll for Player of the year award. For example in 1981 Grezky won it by getting 148 of 324 votes, Liut got 139. I know that Liut won the Pearson with narrow margin so that is not that odd.

In 1986 Gretzky again won the player of the year award. From this year I don´t have the voting totals, but in Pearson Lemieux won 136-107.
https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=Vo1eAAAAIBAJ&sjid=-E4NAAAAIBAJ&pg=4428%2C4588913

1989 is one of the oddest. Pearson order was Yzerman-Lemieux-Gretzky, but in Sporting news poll players voted Lemieux 120, Gretzky 109, Yzerman 73. There was total of 309 voters so there were probably some "sleepers".

I dug up some Sporting News polls a while back in the player intangibles thread:

1979 said:
Minnesota North Star centre Bobby Smith was selected rookie of the year yesterday in a poll of National Hockey League players published by The Sporting News. Smith previously was chosen NHL rookie of the year by The Hockey News.

The 21-year-old Ottawa native received 117 votes in The Sporting News survey, easily topping Washington's Ryan Walter, who had 78 votes. Wayne Babych of St. Louis finished third with 60.

Meanwhile, Montreal Canadiens and New York Islanders made a clean sweep of The Sporting News NHL all-star team. In a vote of 270 players, centre Bryan Trottier, left winger Clark Gillies and defenceman Denis Potvin of the Islanders and right winger Guy Lafleur, defenceman Larry Robinson and goalie Ken Dryden of the Canadiens were chosen as the league's best players.

1980 said:
Los Angeles Kings centre Marcel Dionne has been selected 1979-80 National Hockey League player of the year in a poll conducted by The Sporting News. Dionne, who scored 53 goals for the Kings, received 128 of 348 votes cast by NHL players in the annual poll by the weekly publication announced yesterday. He edged Wayne Gretzky of the Edmonton Oilers by one vote.

Ray Bourque of Boston Bruins was voted the league's top rookie. Bourque set a record for points (65) by a rookie defenceman with 17 goals and 48 assists.

1983 said:
Wayne Gretzky of Edmonton Oilers was the overwhelming choice by National Hockey League players as the player of the year in balloting conducted by The Sporting News.

Gretzky received the votes of 176 players in the results announced yesterday. Boston Bruin goalie Pete Peeters was second with 116 votes. It is the third consecutive year players voted Gretzky the NHL's top star.

Right winger Steve Larmer of Chicago Black Hawks was chosen rookie of the year.

Gretzky, 22, had 196 points, with 71 goals and 125 assists, to win his third consecutive scoring title this season. His assist total is an NHL record.

The weekly sports periodical polled 326 NHL players.

1984 said:
Edmonton Oiler Wayne Gretzky has been selected the 1983-84 National Hockey League player of the year in a poll of NHL players conducted by The Sporting News. The Oiler centre received the honor for a record fourth consecutive year. Gretzky was chosen on 250 of a 313 ballots cast.

Centre Steve Yzerman, first-round draft choice of Detroit Red Wings last June, was chosen rookie of the year. His 39 goals and 87 points set Detroit standards for a first-year player.

Gretzky demonstrated his importance to the Oilers in a season that saw Edmonton win the Stanley Cup for the first time. He finished the season with 87 goals and 118 assists to lead the NHL in scoring for the fourth year in a row. He was held without a point in only three games.

Gretzky heads the publication's all-star team as well. Boston's Rick Middleton was chosen the all-star right winger, Michel Goulet of Quebec Nordiques was selected at left wing, the Bruins' Ray Bourque and Washington Capital Rod Langway were chosen as defencemen. Pat Riggin of Washington was selected the team's goaltender.

1998 said:
Buffalo Sabres goalie Dominik Hasek is The Sporting News player of the year in the NHL for the second year in a row. In a poll of players, Hasek received 98 votes, followed by Anaheim's Teemu Selanne (69) and Pittsburgh's Jaromir Jagr (25). The weekly publication also chose Boston's Pat Burns as coach of the year and Bruins right-winger Sergei Samsonov as rookie of the year. Pittsburgh's Craig Patrick was selected executive of the year.

2002 said:
Jarome Iginla, a finalist for the Hart Trophy as the NHL's Most Valuable Player, on Tuesday was named Player of the Year by The Sporting News in a landslide vote. Iginla received 101 votes to become the first Calgary player to earn the Sporting News Player of the Year award.

Goaltender Patrick Roy and center Joe Sakic of the Colorado Avalanche finished second and third with 22 and 17 votes, respectively, in balloting among NHL players.

The 24-year-old Iginla scored a league-leading 52 goals and added 44 assists to top all players with 96 points.

Atlanta Thrashers right wing Dany Heatley edged out teammate Ilya Kovalchuk for the Sporting News Rookie of the Year honor. The 21-year-old Heatley had 26 goals and 41 assists.

Brian Sutter and Mike Smith of the Chicago Blackhawks were honored as the Coach and Executive of the Year, respectively, after the club went from 29-40-8 to 41-27-13 and a playoff spot. It had been 56 years since The Sporting News' voters nominated a Blackhawk for either category, the last being coaching honors for Johnny Gottselig in 1945-46.

In a close vote by NHL coaches, Sutter edged out Bobby Francis of Phoenix and Robbie Ftorek of Boston.

ST. LOUIS (AP) - The Boston Bruins high-scoring Phi Esposito, Bobby Orr and Ken Hodge have been named to an East Division National Hockey League all-star team by Sporting News, a weekly publication. While the Bruins' three positions dominate the East Division team, the Philadelphia Flyers placed goaltender Bernie Parent, center Bobby Clarke and defenseman Barry Ashbee on the West. Selections were by ballot of NHL players. Esposito topped the voting for the East lineup and Parent was the leading players' choice in the West.

Another idea. Compare the following two links:
  1. Link: 1970-71
  2. Link: 1970-71
Link 1 is what we're currently using in the OP of the new thread. Single post view. All seasons are cleanly separated, you only get to see a single post = a single season at a time. But this also means you have to open a new site or tab or window every time you want to look at another season. Link 2 on the other hands leads you to the season you're looking for without preventing you from scrolling up and down to the seasons before and the season after for comparison and info compilation. Probably the better option to work with?

I know how to open a full page of posts. It's better than a single post at a time but worse than all the information on one page, though I guess it isn't horrible to open multiple tabs at once and cntl-F them both, if we are talking about a player whose career straddled 1961 or 1985. But it does make it more time consuming to search out a player than it used to be.

Well, there is hardly anything we can do about it, is there? The old thread was conventient for those who often worked with it and were used to it but for everybody else it was a confusing mess. Good thing the old thread is still around so everybody who prefers it can still use it as his workplace.

Regardless, I think we should replace the single post links in the new thread with the full page links.

IMO the best format would be as follows:

Keep the new thread with the OP having links to individual seasons, but then have posts 2-5 (or however many posts are needed) with all of the results combined in those few posts like the old thread. That way all of the results are contained in the first page of the thread and you can do the ctrl-F technique if you like (I also prefer this way). For those that don't like that technique or are only interested in one particular year they can click on the links. So in other words, all the information would be in the thread twice, first all combined in posts 2-x, and then repeated with just one year per post like it's set up now. This way you get the best of both worlds.

I like it.

It's also theoretically possible that the upcoming software upgrade will allow 100 posts per page views, though that is probably wishful thinking. I miss it when hfboards let you chose to have 50 posts per page view; currently everyone is locked into 25 with no options to change.
