From the NHL Media Guide, the thing that stands out the most is the fact that Eddie Shore led all defensemen in Hart votes eight times (1928, 1929, 1931, 1933, 1935, 1936, 1938, 1939). This may be a bit of a stretch, but isn't it possible to infer that Shore was the best defenseman in the league eight times? Is this the equivalent of winning eight Norris trophies?

In my projected awards I gave Shore 6 Norris trophies and 3 Norris runners up. He is a top 5 or 7 player, IMO.

I'm not an employee of the HHOF although I do a lot of my work there and I volunteer to help them in various areas like their 'History of Hockey' Course.

And, I'm always looking to learn more about hockey history from any source.

Are you able to get the complete voting results for all awards. Is it in the HOF?

I have the all-star results for `80, `79, `77, `75 and `73; if anyone`s still interested I could post them; it`s just a pain typing it all in so I was putting it off `til I had more time. However, I did do a couple of quick "Bill James grey ink tests" using the Hart trophy results. The first one was simply taking the top 5 from the years that Ogopogo received the results for and adding up each players total giving 5 points for 1st place, 4 points for 2nd place, etc. It was a fairly lazy test as I didn`t compensate for the seasons in the 1920s that didn`t have full results and I didn`t take margin of victory into account; but still the results were interesting. Remember these aren`t my personal ratings, it`s just a listing of players who received the most support in MVP voting:

1. Wayne Gretzky 55
2. Gordie Howe 54
3. Mario Lemieux 33
4. Eddie Shore 31
5. Bobby Orr 29
6. Bobby Hull 28.5
7. Jean Beliveau 28
8. Jaromir Jagr 22
8. Maurice Richard 22
10. Phil Esposito 21

The other one was a little more complex. I did it before Ogopogo received the
Awards Media Guide and we only had full Hart results for `69- `04. For each of those 36 seasons I took the total number of points the top 10 vote-getters had and then split 50 points between those players based on the percentage of the top ten points they had (that way Martin St. Louis` landslide victory was worth more than Jose Theodore`s razor-thin victory). Then I took another 50 points per season and distributed those evenly among the top ten players ( 5 pts apiece) regardless of finish. That rewards consistency and stops a player from ranking too high just because of one big year.

Once again keep in mind that this is only from 1969-2004. Also once again these
aren`t my personal ratings, just an interpretation of the cumultative Hart results.
One thing I`m convinced of is that defencemen do not get the MVP support they
deserve; only three made this top 20 list, which is ridiculous ( and I think the three
d-men on here should be rated higher than they are. The most surprising part of this list are the high ranking of two Philadelphia Flyers:

1. Wayne Gretzky
2. Mario Lemieux
3. Bobby Orr
4. Bobby Clarke
5. Jaromir Jagr
6. Phil Esposito
7. Dominik Hasek
8. Guy Lafleur
9. Mark Messier
10. Bryan Trottier
11. Ray Bourque
12. Tony Esposito
13. Patrick Roy
14. Eric Lindros
15. Marcel Dionne
16. Denis Potvin
17. Joe Sakic
18. Steve Yzerman
19. Martin Brodeur
20. Brett Hull

I've added the 92-93 All-star voting. I put a link to this on Hockey Forums and it was posted there. Hopefully someone there can fill in a few more holes for this.

Reckoning what did you do for 95 when there was only a top 6?

What`s wrong with mentioning the name of the Swedish forward who played for Philly in the late 80s?

It's a board wide filter thing. I asked to have it fixed yesterday, and they did, but now it's back to ****** again.

You hear anything back from the NHL Ogopogo?

Thanks for reminding me to update you guys.

I have been told by the head stats guy at the NHL in Toronto (GREAT guy, very friendly and prompt with responses) that both he and the head stats guy in NY are tremendously busy in preparation for the season, that is likely why the NY guy has not returned any of my emails or voice mails. If you can believe this, the stats guy at NHL NY is the only man on the planet that has the complete voting results that I am looking for.

So, I will have to be patient and, I probably won't hear from him until mid-October. :(

As soon as I do have the information, I will definitely share it.

Defence: Larry Robinson 280; Ray Bourque 183; Borje Salming 179; Jim Schoenfeld 134; Mark Howe 102; Barry Beck 51; Denis Potvin 22; Doug Wilson 20; Ron Stack house 18; Rod Langway 18; Bill Hajt 15; Jimmy Watson 11; Reed Larson 11; Mike McEwen 10; Craig Hartsburg 10; Robert Picard 9; Bob Dailey 8; Serge Savard 6; Paul Smyhr 6; Larry Playfair 5; Rick Ley 5; Lars Lindgren 4; Dick Redmond 4; Ron Greschner 4; Lars-Erik Sjoberg 3; Bob Murray 3; John Van Boxmeer 3; Norm Barnes 2; Gary Sargaent 2; Doug Halward 2

Centre: Marcel Dionne 250; Wayne Gretzky 238; Gilbert Perreault 33; Bryan Trottier 28; Darryl Sittler 8; Bernie Federko 2; Bobby Smith 2; Mike Rogers 1; Pierre Larouche 1; Ken Linseman 1; Greg Malone 1; Jean Ratelle 1; Guy Lafleur 1

Right Wing: Guy Lafleur 294; Danny Gare 130; Mike Bossy 53; Blaine Stoughton 25; Al MacAdam 14; Dave Taylor 13; Rick Middleton 12; Reggie Leach 12; Lanny McDonald 7; Blair MacDonald 5; Rich Preston 1; Mike Foligno 1

The eye-catcher here is that this was the only season in Mike Bossy`s first 9 years that he didn`t make the 1st or 2nd team. Denis Potvin had missed over half the season due to injury and not coincidentally the scoring totals of the other Islanders dropped substantially.

I can no longer add new stuff to the first post as they have shortened the max post length to 75,000 and we're already double that in length.

reckoning there are 4 points missing from the defense voting to make it complete.

Why is Savard always on all time lists and Lapointe never? Just look at the Norris votes.

I'll let the Ed Kean slide ;) , but not the Dave Pronovost. I'm thinking it's, Dave somebody has 3 votes for the Lady Byng and Pronovost is Jean, also with 3 votes, as we only have 456 of 459 voting points.

Actually, that's straight from the Hockey News (Dave Pronovost), although I agree that it should definitely be Jean.

The Ed Kea error was all mine, though. :)
