Suter cross checked Kariya right in the face while he was celebrating a goal. Kariya was never the same player after that.

I don't know how anyone could think that it wasn't an attempt to injure. He was suspended for 4 games in an era where suspensions were uncommon. Today that would be 20+.

One of the most blatant cheap shots in the history of hockey.

Attempt to injure does not mean premeditated, though. Premeditated would mean that Suter was focused on injuring Kariya and was looking for an opportunity to do so. It could have just been a rush of anger, though, which wasn't premeditated.

Absolutely true. That's why I don't like to speculate on whether or not a hit was premeditated. We have no way of knowing what was going on in Suters head.

But to say that the hit wasn't premeditated is just as ignorant as saying that it was. And to suggest that someone who thinks it was needs psychiatric help, or cheap shots are OK if it is on Gretzky, well that just takes ignorance to another level.

No matter how you slice it though, one of the cheapest shot in the history of the game.
