Bondra ranks surprisingly high on this chart. I would have thought he would be lower on a ten year table but quite high on a six or seven year table for goal scoring.

Gartner ranks 41st, which puts him ahead of a number of players primarily known for offense.

O6 Era

Nicklas Backstrom is ahead of some very good players here...

He seems underrated offensively around these parts. The guy has been a consistent point producer and he has five finishes in the top ten for points.

Surpassed by roughly 30 players whose careers started in the O6 era or earlier and whose careers are finished.

Chances are Backstrom does not sustain his performance level over time.

I guess it doesn't work for points per game:

In theory it should work, but it looks like you're dividing adjusted scoring (which contemplates a modern season length) by actual games played. That's why the table is full of players from the 1930s - you're dividing adjusted points by actual games played, from short seasons. If you used adjusted games played, the results should make sense (I'll see if I have that data handy).

Comparing maybe. Still a very interesting description of the distribution of points over a career.

Could also look at X Worst seasons as a counterweight representing the fluctuations, peaks and valleys that a career goes thru.

Didn't you ran the numbers for my PPGVsX system sometimes last year in the ATD2017 Summary thread (seasons were unweighted though)? Also, the ReplacementVsX numbers which had similar results.Oh and finally, the best consecutive seasons was also a nice touch.

I have PIM data and it would be easy to run some reports (trickier if you want that normalized/adjusted in some way, but probably not too difficult).

I know that I had shots and saves at one point, but I'm not sure where the file is now. I'll have to look for that one as well.

Thank you. Perhaps once near complete archival data is available otherwise the effort would have to be constantly adjusted and thus less reliable at the start.

There are exceptions of course (Bucyk probably being the most notable), but generally offensive production diminishes over time. Thus, comparing players with very different career lengths based solely on PPG will usually favour the player with the shorter career.

A better statistic (which I can post if anyone is interested) is PPG over the best X seasons.

Didn't you ran the numbers for my PPGVsX system sometimes last year in the ATD2017 Summary thread (seasons were unweighted though)?

Good news - I found the file. As I suspected, I had it saved on another computer.

Rather than clog up this thread with two thousand lines of data, I'm going to post one table. It has the top 400 players sorted by seven year PPG VsX. There are five columns - for three, five, seven, ten and fifteen years. A few other points:

• Only seasons where the player played at least half the schedule apply (otherwise we pretend they didn't happen - so Crosby's 2011 and 2013 seasons count, but 2012 doesn't).
• Seasons are weighted based on adjusted games played (so a player who missed a lot of time during his best seasons, like Crosby, gets penalized for it, since 2011 and 2013 are given less weight than, say, 2007, 2014 and 2015).
• The years don't need to be consecutive.
• In the 10 and 15 year columns, if a player doesn't have enough qualifying seasons, his score is shown as zero.
• This table is sorted by the seven year time frame. It should be easy to copy this into Excel if you want to sort by the other columns.

A few comments:

• Biggest surprise in the three year category? Bill Cowley ranks 7th all-time (after only the Big Four, Esposito, and Lafleur). Consistent, steady players like Modano (137th) and Sundin (170th) don't look great over this time frame. Over this short period, Markus Naslund ranks ahead of luminaries like Hawerchuk, Perreault and Gilmour.
• In the five year category, Charlie Conacher looks great (12th all-time). Busher Jackson is a decimal point out of the top twenty.
• I'm not surprised to see that in the seven year category, Lafleur and Jagr lead the way (after the Big Four and Esposito), but Crosby is right behind them (and that's excluding his 2012 season entirely).
• Around one-quarter of players have dropped off in the ten year category (Orr, Drillon, Conacher and Bure are the most notable).
• By the time we reach the fifteen year category, nearly 60% of the list no longer qualifies (including Lemieux, Crosby, Apps, Cowley, Malkin, Bossy, Ovechkin, Lach, Morenz, Forsberg, Lindros, Stastny, Conacher, and Boucher). There are four distinct categories - Gretzky, Howe & Esposito, the next tier (Beliveau, Mikita, Jagr, Hull, Dionne & Richard), then everyone else.
