Team Canada executive director Wayne Gretzky said 20-year-old Jay Bouwmeester of the Florida Panthers will take Redden's place when Canada faces Russia on Saturday.

It's interesting to read that Gretzky sais Redden might be back for the quarter-final or semi-final, which means that his injury could be serious. I didn't see any posts about it, so discuss his injury in this one.

Hopefully he can come back, but I think Bouwmeester can get the job done.

Niedermayer Regehr
Brewer Foote
Hannan Bouwmeester

Not too shabby!

This is really bad thing to hope for but when I heard that JBo was not going to dress for the first game, I was hoping that someone would get hurt so that Bouwmeester can get his chance. As Hitchcock and many others have mentioned before, Jay was one of the top 3 Dmen for Canada through the preliminary rounds!!!

I would much rather have Jay than Brewer or Jovo...perhaps Jay's not as physical but better all around...remember, this is the same guy that won the best defenceman award ahead of some of the NHL guys like Lidstrom and also Gonchar (I think) playing at the Worlds in 2003 as a 19 year old!!! Albeit that the ice was bigger, it is an astounding feat nontheless!!!

Lidstrom didn't play at Worlds in 2003. You are thinking of 2004 where he played one or two games.

The situation that has developed for Canada is exactly why I felt they should have brought a veteran, stabilizing presence like Aucoin instead of Bouwmeester.

I stand corrected. Lidstrom did not play at 2003 WC. As you've said, I'm getting 2003 and 2004 mixed up.

Here are the defensemen that played there and JBo won the tournament's best Defensman award ahead of all these other NHL'ers at age 19!!!

look at Visnovsky, 12 points and +11 in 9 games compared to Bouwmeester's 7 points and +3, sure stats aren't everything but a +/- so high, Visnovsky can't really be physical with his frame.
