In the category of "silver linings for fans of awful teams", the Red Wings are accelerating the youth movement this season.

Dennis Cholowski - #20 pick in 2016
Christoffer Ehn - #106 pick in 2014
Filip Hronek - #53 pick in 2016
Libor Sulak - Undrafted signing (24yrs old)
Michael Rasmussen - #9 pick in 2017

Will all make their first NHL game tonight. On top of that Joe Hicketts will play in his 6th game.

Later in the season we are sure to see Evgeni Svechnikov (injured) and Filip Zadina up with the big club. Possibly players like Givani Smith and Axel Holmstrom as well.

Is this the year where the Wings finally go from being the 'old' team to becoming known as a young team on the rise?

That's a lot of youth on the blueline. What happened to Daley/Dekeyser/Ericsson/Kronwall?

Thanks. Any of the pups likely to stay when the veterans come back?

i'm sure at least one of them will probably stick around

right now Cholowski probably has the best chance based on the preseason but who knows,Sulak had a solid preseason too and has experience playing against men overseas,Blashill seems to like Hicketts, and Hronek was good in the AHL last year

Putting a bunch of kids in the NHL doesn't mean anything. Wings would be wise to just leave Zadina alone for a year to develop and send the kids down who eventually falter after a bigger sample size against real NHL competition. Wings are years away, just play the vets hard minutes and shelter the kids, draft high again, and repeat.

A good first step for the Wings. A couple more years accumulating guys like this and the future will look bright. I like the direction they are taking.

They might be horrible this year but this feels like the most watchable/exciting season for the wings in a while. Larkin, Mantha and Bertuzzi will be the go to guys it seems most of the year with lots of young guys coming in and out of the line up on top of that. As much as I loved Zetterberg, there was nothing exciting about him logging huge mins to take the team nowhere. At least now after this past draft and the amount of young guys playing tonight, it seems like theyre heading in the right direction

DET is quietly building up some young talent.

Always helps to get Filip Zadina at #5 too

just a bunch of short term injuries

those 4 young Defensemen will probably be down to 1-2 within a week or so

Doubt they will all be down. It's pretty obvious that Cholowski made the team regardless of injuries. And even when everyone is healthy, wouldn't be surprised if Hicketts or Sulak stay up and they waive or trade Jensen. Hicketts and Hronek are both playing over him on opening night anyways and Jensen is not injured.

Obviously it will ultimately depend on their play moving forward, if they look terrible and completely overmatched then yeah that changes my prediction.

Cholowski will probably stay barring him looking terrible. I think one of Hicketts or Sulak will stay also, at the expense of waiving/trading Jensen.

Young team, sure.

On the rise? Not yet.

A little hope never hurt anybody. I agree that it will make for more watchable games. In the absence of wins, a little youthful exuberance will work.

Is "Youth Movement" code for "Lose for Hughes"? If so I approve.
Well the thing is, they were gonna lose regardless. Jensen, Kronwall, Ericsson, Daley etc. aren't carrying the team anywhere. For those who have questioned if the Wings are even rebuilding, this kind of opening roster should make it clear once and for all.

Tweet fails to mention that the 85-86 Red Wings were the worst team in franchise history.

How has Rasmussen played in the preseason? He's had a lot of questions about his ability to think the game at the NHL level.

He played well in the preseaon, our big issue is really not the kids talent, it is how Trashill uses said talent or lack there of. If a tank is what we are doing Trashill will be kept as coach. He might be a good coach it is just not working here at the moment.

Yea, I know Blashill had a lot of hope placed in him, but to be fair to him, your team hasn't had a lot of depth to work with in awhile.

No we have not that is for sure. but that is to be expected we where a good team for so long and never had any high draft picks. We are getting excited again as a fan base though.
