Bingo. This team is boring to watch even with Tootoo in the line up. All you guys want these small Euros who don't do ****. We need more guys who play with energy and stand out, like Tootoo. We don't need anymore of these types of players. It gets old real quick. The passive, no hitting style isn't what people want to see anymore. And skill doesn't win you cups anymore. Why do you think the 90's Wings were so dominant? Because they had a combination of skill and toughness. We need another Shannahan. Too bad we keep drafting these small Euros, and say the same ********, "small but skilled". Why can't they be "big, tough, and skilled"?

Big, tough, and skilled guys aren't easy to get. I don't know about everyone else but I myself enjoy watching skilled players (your euro hate is showing BTW). We have the most entertaining player in the league in Datsyuk and Filppula and Z are fun to watch as well. This team wont be fun to watch until they start winning.

Just to be clear I'm not a major proponent of a enforcers/ physical style vs a skill style. My ideal team would be close to the 96-97 team that won the cup. A nice mix of both. With that said people typically watch a team for one of two reasons 1. The team is a contender/ winner (fans are willing to put up with a more boring style if they are winning) or 2. The team is entertaining.

So if the Wings aren't going to win and need to rebuild they need to put a more entertaining group on the ice if they want to maintain the current level of fan base.

On this team only Datsyuk, Helm, and Tootoo are consistently entertaining players. Zetterberg and Kronwall can create moments of major excitement but aren't as consistent as the above. Brunner may get there but right now he is still feeling out this game.

Our bottom 6 is boring to watch outside of Tootoo and Helm. Only Tootoo will really fight. Eaves won't anymore thanks to the concussion and Abs just shouldn't because he is awful. They also aren't super physical either, especially if not paired with the above two. None of them (outside of Cleary this year) are bad players but they don't really excel at anything. Miller, Cleary, Eaves, Emmerton, Abdelkader, etc simply kill time. On occasion they can create a pressure cycle but this is pretty rare and again relies on Helm or Tootoo starting it. So if you figure that 20 minutes a game that nothing really exciting is happening, then that's a major issue regarding an overall enjoyment factor of the game. This issue is further enhanced if you team isn't winning.

Then you look at our top 6. Z and Dats are legit top 3 players. Superstars and thus are generally quite exciting. They are good enough to make the other players around them better, but they are getting older. This year I think they still have enough to carry their lines but in a season or two if health catches up with them we are left with Franzen, Flip, Sammy, Bert, Brunner. All of them are streaky players. They have one or two really exciting games and then go blah for 5 games. Now if you have a prime Dats or Z to prop those players up it isn't a big deal, as long as they at least take turns with their blah games. But without prime superstars to prop those guys up they get really boring to watch really fast. Now with that said Franzen, Flip, and Brunner can all step up their game to higher levels. I mean Franzen in beast mode is more entertaining than most but that has been a rare occurence. Flip and Brunner have both had moments of that pull you out of your seat skill but it can't be once every 10 games if you expect people to pay to see them. They Wings are going to need guys like Nyquist, Tatar, Jarnkrok, and Jurco to hit and be exciting if they want to maintain attendance numbers.

People can handle bad play or mistakes if they are rookies and/or a player is improving. Having vets that aren't going to get better making those mistakes is an issue. Fans will put up with if for awhile, but not for years.

As noted the TV shots behind the glass can be deceiving. I was at the game vs St. Louis and was surprised to see the empty seats watching the replay. In the 1st period I sat in row 20(?), 2nd to last in the upper bowl. It was packed up there and everybody sat in the wrong seats, you just had to sit where you could. The next night Ken Daniels said "the Joe was rockin last night..." Damn was he correct. There were droves of people making for long lines and having to inch forward as a herd trying to leave the arena. I can't remember a game that was that filled with spectators. There were a lot of 20 somethings too. They looked like newbs and it gave me the feeling that it somehow "hip" to be a hockey fan. I believe the lockout created a buzz and peaked the interest of some who may never have watched before.

This has got me thinking about who the true "fans" are. It seemed like in the upper bowl (with college priced tickets etc.) people were incessantly checking their phones, chatting, showing up halfway through the period, leaving for beer or the bathroom. Anything to not watch the game. And they all have a new crisp Zetterberg jersey, strange. In the 3rd I snuck down to the lower bowl and the folks there seemed more like hockey "fans." We watched each move intently, with the same gasps and small cheers. As a goal went in the fans erupted immediately as it was happening. They didn't need to see a replay on the jumbotron to know what was up!

Anyways "hockey town" is an odd place. There is a huge amount of bandwagon fans. Michigan has a lot of hockey players so it is somewhat ingrained in the populace. In the Detroit Metro area you will see a surprising number of RW stickers on cars, RW hats, etc. Most of the people barely watch the regular season but come playoffs they're all in. I don't think it matters how much the Wings win or lose, there will always be support for the team.

Don't want to belittle Detroit, but does anyone think a lot of the problem of people actually showing up has to do with the surrounding area? I know parts of Detroit are coming back, but there really isnt much to do still after a game if you're not a casino man.

Can't blame the city when the tigers had record attendance and the Lions sell out. Besides there was even less to do in the past when it was packed to the rafters.

Yeah but who has time to do things after a game at night when they have to go to work the next morning.

the lions aren't a hockey team though

Yeah the Lions are a terrible comparison, they have to fill 8 home dates a season and can rely on the NFL hype machine to do so.

The Pistons are a more relevant comparison. The Pistons led the NBA in attendance between 2003 and 2008, the last two years they've been 28th i.e. one of the worst draws in the league. They drew extremely well as a championship contender and top tier team but once they moved very quickly towards being a bad team and bottom-dweller the attendance dropped like a lead balloon, they averaged 22,000 a few years ago, now it's a bit over 14,000 in announced attendance. In other words they are back to where they were in about 2001, a poorly regarded joke.

People will blame the Palace and its location but the reality is that this didn't stop people when the team got results and also even if we accept it's a worse location than the Joe, basketball is the more popular sport so that probably evens it out.

If anyone think this can't happen to the Wings, well, they weren't around in the 70s and 80s.

Some NHL hockey 101:

You need realize that the DRW has an entirely different set of conditions to play under with the salary cap and with the draft system.

Big, tough, AND skilled = picked early, and huge salary, huge RFA costs in particular.
