So far in those six games:

0-4-2
14 goals for (2.33 G/G)
30 goals against (5.00 GA/G)
-16 goal differential

To say this start has been a disaster for the Red Wings would be an understatement.

Hughes will score a lot of goals for the Wings
He's actually more of a playmaker than a goal scorer. Throughout most of his youth career, for every goal he scores, he averages approximately two assists. He doesn't have a lot of velocity on his shot, so most of his goals happen fairly close to the net.

Last year, he scored 40 goals, 76 assists in 60 games combined with the USNTDP U17 and 18 teams.

The year before, he scored 58 goals, 101 assists in 80 games in the Greater Toronto Minor Midget Hockey League.

This year, he has 2 goals, 9 assists in 8 games so far with the U18 team.

If anything, Hughes would be the playmaker for Zadina.

The Red Wings have had a few first-overall picks during their existence. Their worst finish in recent years resulted in the Wings drafting Joe Murphy first overall in 1986. Before that, they drafted Dale McCourt first overall in 1977. Their other first-overall pick was Claude Gauthier in 1964.

They drafted Marcel Dionne second overall in 1971 and Peter Mahovlich #2 overall in 1963.

Keith Primeau was their #3 overall pick in 1990, and in 1979 they picked Mike Foligno #3 overall. George Forgie was their other #3 overall pick in 1965.

Steve Yzerman was their #4 overall pick in 1983. Before that, they selected Fred Williams fourth overall in 1976.

Rick Lapointe was their fifth-overall pick in 1975.

The Red Wings have had a lengthy history with Top 5 picks, but none in recent years.

That will probably change this year. It's the start of a new era.

Awful Veteran leadership and a very inexperienced defense. 6 out of 18 skaters on opening night were rookies, 4 of them Dmen. Holland has prided himself on a winning culture and a winning mentality in the locker room, but has brought in losers in Nielsen and Vanek. They have been losers their entire careers and look perfectly content getting obliterated on the ice game after game. Anyone out there that still actually believes the Wings wanted Zetterberg gone?

Abdelkader 4 more years at 4.25M
Nielsen 3 more years at 5.25M
Helm 2 more years at 3.85M

Just a bunch of dead weight average veterans.

I feel like Abdelkader and Nielsen could be good contributors elsewhere in a supporting role, but its the term of those contracts that would hurt their trade value.

The fact that this made me think Abdelkader maybe, but Nielsen no way should shed some light in Nielsen’s play. He’s been atrocious and extremely careless. Nielsen just looks content losing. At least Abdelkader you could put him on the 3rd line on a good team and he would bring some grit, decent on the forecheck, and would battle in front of the net. The contract is atrocious though.

Current defensive pairs:

Cholowski - Hronek
Kronwall - Jensen
Hicketts - Sulak

I don't mean to kick dirt on them, but good lord that's atrocious. Take away a broken-down Kronwall, and the only other guy with relevant NHL experience is Jensen who made it out of the AHL as a 25-year-old a couple of years ago. If Kronwall were to go down, it would literally be a bunch of guys who should be in the AHL or juniors, trying to figure out the NHL together.

At least they'll know what they have. But I'm not sure this is really a good plan for their development.

That team looks like it's going to be bad for 2-3 more years, at best. But Rasmussen has looked good.

Yeesh. No way I am sitting in those crappy upper level overpriced LCA seats to watch that D operate.

Holland is more stale than Lou. At what point do you stop looking at his accomplishments from a decade ago and realize he’s awful?
We've been saying this since about 2013, and management/front office bringing everything back from last year, is the current dumpster fire all are witnessing. Blashill should have been let go 2 seasons ago, and Holland a lot further than that.

The only hope on the horizon is the 2019 draft and the possible return of the Captain to salvage this internally made disaster. This season has been just about meaningless from the very start.
