Every time that I am critical of a rider going wide or checking their mount, I need to remember that jockeys have more guts than any other athlete. I am incapable of taking 1/100th the physical risks that these brave souls do. It pains me greatly when they get seriously hurt. The ugly part of our wonderful game.

I echo your hopes for progress for Halliday.

Agreed. There is nothing wrong with constructive criticism of a rider so long as it is kept within the boundaries of civility. Money is on the line and handicappers can vent. Wishing injury or worse is emotion gone wrong and self-discipline should be in play. A simple look at the ambulance following the race as each develops, at any track in North America, is a reminder.

Belterra (Ohio):
  • Perry Ouzts won with three of his four mounts the last being his 52,000th ride. His starts figure is second most in North America annals, less than 1,600 from all-time leader Russell Baze. The 67-year-old Ouzts (one bio shows 67) is 6th winningest rider in North America annals as he closes in on 7,200.

Live racing (free stream) from Assiniboia Downs in Manitoba. If nothing else, this is a very colorful simulcast graphics.

  • Steve Asmussen (9,433 wins) is 12 wins shy of tying Dale Baird (9,445) and the all-time record for victories by a trainer in North America.
OIP.vgLS15UCOGAl-on6xVl6XAAAAA
His upcoming schedule:
  • Thursday: 3 starters
  • Friday: 5 starters
  • Saturday: 12 starters
  • Sunday: 1 starter
  • Monday: 3 starters
  • Tuesday: 3 starters
Saratoga (New York):
  • Handle: Just under $11 million.
  • Jose Ortiz won twice, the only rider to win multiple times.
  • Michael Maker trained two winners.
  • Leading riders: As many others say, Luis Saez and the Ortiz Brothers should be 1-2-3 in the wins standings for this meet, in whatever order, when it ends in September. Right now, Saez and Irad O. lead with 9 wins and Jose O. has 8 wins.
  • John Velazquez is 18 0-1-1. Javier Castellano is 19 1-1-3. Both are in the Hall of Fame.
  • Brad Cox is 6 4-1-1. Splendid numbers. The 4 wins ties him with Steve Asmussen and Bill Mott for meet leader.

OIP.dQHdf6XHi4XhJ8zOYLB-uAHaFB

Saratoga (New York):
  • Handle: Nearly $15 million.
  • Churchill Downs shippers seem to be magical this meet.
  • Race 1: Baltimore Bucko (Thomas Garner/Keri Brion) wired the field in the 2 1/16 mile Grade I $150,000 A.P. Smithwick Steeplechase Stakes. The 5-year-old British-bred was the youngest starter in the race. He had raced in Tennessee, Georgia and Virginia in addition to Europe. Such is the life of a steeplechase runner. The trainer, a former jockey who was born in Pennsylvania, saddled her first Grade 1 winner. She also placed with another runner.

  • Race 5: Pizza Bianca (Joel Rosario/Christophe Clement) debuted to a nice win. The 2-year-old filly was purchased in a private auction by owner Bobby Flay.

  • Javier Castellano, who entered with one win this meet, won twice.
  • Joel Rosario was 4 2-1-1 today.
  • Irad Ortiz, Jose Ortiz and Luis Saez lead the meet with nine wins apiece.
  • John Velazquez is 19 0-2-1. He has a 2-to-5 morning line in a graded stakes this weekend.
  • Chad Brown is 21 2-7-1 and Todd Pletcher is 16 1-1-4. Arguably New York's two finest trainers the past few years have both struggled in the early days of the meet.
Delaware Park (Delaware):
  • Jaime Rodriguez had a 5 win day. He leads the meet with 39 wins.
  • Jamie Ness won three times. He leads the meet with 22 wins.
  • Jaime Rodriguez-Jamie Ness teamed to win three of four times.
Indiana Grand (Indiana):
  • Race 4: Dirty Dixie Road (Joseph Ramos/Marvin Johnson) wired the field as the longest shot on the board at 41-to-1.

  • Steve Asmussen (9,434 wins) is 11 wins shy of tying Dale Baird (9,445) and the all-time record for victories by a trainer in North America. He was winless today. He has 12 starters on Saturday.
OIP.QYmasU2fjOPKJuyahNjpBQHaEO

Saratoga (New York):
  • Handle: Roughly $20 million.
  • Kentucky: The Kentucky connections are having strong meets.
  • Michael Maker sent out horses in three races and each won. He is tied with Steve Asmussen and Christophe Clement for meet lead in wins.
  • Luis Saez rode three winners.
  • Tyler Gaffalione won the opener and finale. Jose Ortiz and Joel Rosario also rode two winners.
  • Race 4: An extremely close finish.
  • Race 9: Technical Analysis (Jose Ortiz/Chad Brown) won the $150,000 Grade 3 Lake George Stakes at 7-to-1. Brown entered four in the race. He is 27 3-8-2 this meet.

  • John Velazquez is 20 0-2-1 at the meet. He has a layup tomorrow.
  • A 105-year-old man at the track today being honored. Applause!

Pimlico (Maryland):
  • Race 5: 6-1, 23-to-1 and 42-to-1 should bring large payouts but this was remarkable: a $1 tri was nearly $5,000 and a $.10 super was over $5,900 or a $1 super would have paid $59,000.
Ellis Park (Kentucky):
  • Dirt to turf: That is an odd sentence in the racing world but it happened today when a tractor damaged the inner rail which necessitated the removal of dirt racing. Turf to dirt happens often but dirt to turf is a rarity. UPDATE: It was later revealed that the tractor driver had a medical emergency seconds prior to the accident. Hopefully nothing too serious. UPDATE 2: The tractor operator died. That somber news was reported July 27. What a reality check. Geez. Rest in peace.
Del Mar (California):
  • Handle: Approximately $15 million.

  • Steve Asmussen (9,435 wins) is 10 wins shy of tying Dale Baird (9,445) and the all-time record for victories by a trainer in North America.
OIP.Of2Tapt1q5fxhR4r1fUmSQAAAA
  • Flying High: Chantal Sutherland had a 4-win day at Gulfstream in her mid-40s and Rob Atras, in his mid-30s, trained his first Grade I winner and no less at Saratoga. Both were born in Winnipeg.
Monmouth (New Jersey):
  • Handle: Roughly $5 million.
  • Steve Asmussen trained a winner for the 9,435th time.
  • Paco Lopez rode three winners and leads the meet with 39 victories.
Pimlico (Maryland):
  • Card: Four of the nine races held purses $100,000 or more.
  • Race 8: Field Pass (Victor Carrasco/Michael Maker) won the $200,000 Grade 3 Baltimore/Washington International Turf Cup as the favorite in a field of four.
  • Race 6: Tightly Twisted (Jhonatan Mendoza/Juanita Bennett) -- who cost $65,000 - won the $100,000 Big Dreyfus Stakes at 9-to-1. She defeated Counterparty Risk (Feargal Lynch/Chad Brown) who was purchased for $440,000 by the award-winning Klaravich Stables who was sent off at 4-to-5. Mendoza, the winning jockey, is from Venezuela and has just 11 lifetime wins in North America; he was 0-for-53 in 2020. Bennett, the winning trainer, has been active since the late 1980s with 43 lifetime wins. This was one for the smaller stables beating the large connections. A sizeable upset that makes for a great story.

Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Enchanted: Chantal Sutherland, part time model, part time actress, full time jockey, born in Winnipeg, Canada, and much more, won four times including scoring a natural hat trick. Sports channels miss out on so many great opportunities to present horse racing in its beauty and the splendid people associated with the sport and this was one example. Sutherland was ecstatic on board her final winner... her smile could have lit up the Miami skyline at midnight. Sutherland is seventh at the meet in wins, at the age of 45. From multiple accounts, she absolutely loves south Florida in her first go around after having her tack in Canada, California, and other parts of the US.
“I'm so grateful. I'm grateful to God, and I'm grateful to Gulfstream for being so amazing,” said Sutherland, who was greeted by an enthusiastic round of cheers from fans in the grandstand and on the apron upon her return to the winner's circle. “It's been really nice here. I'm so happy it's worked out the way it did. Thanks to [trainer] Kenny McPeek, who helped me get fit to do this during the winter."

E7F-IAuXMAQQ0pg
  • Race 10: Key Biscayne (Chantal Sutherland/Juan Alvarado) won the $75,000 feature race.
  • Arindel Farm, headed by former Florida Panthers' 0wner Alan Cohen, had three winners with four horses sent out.
  • Handle/Weather: $6.5 million. Weather hurt the handle with lack of turf racing.
Ellis Park (Kentucky):
  • Race 6: Girl With a Dream (Florent Geroux/Brad Cox) won by more than 6 lengths in a nice debut at $50,000 MSW. The hot connections are having strong meets at Ellis.
Arlington (Illinois):
  • Off the turf: Weather impacted turf racing.
  • Jareth Loveberry rode three winners. His 60 wins this meet is 33 more than his closest challenger.
  • Larry Rivelli has 48 wins, 30 more than his closest challenger among trainers.
Del Mar (California):
  • Handle: Roughly $20 million.
  • Race 10: Madone (Juan Hernandez/Simon Callaghan) won the $200,000 Grade 2 San Clemente Stakes at 5-to-1.

  • Race 7: Mirasol (Mike Smith/Bob Baffert) finished third in her debut. The 2-year-old daughter to Arrogate was a private purchase by little-known Clearview Stables who have two wins lifetime.
  • Race 6: United (Flavien Prat/Richard Mandella) won the $250,000 Grade 2 Eddie Read Stakes by a neck over Smooth Like Strait (Umberto Rispoli/Michael McCarthy). United won this race last year and is closing in on $1.7 million earned.

  • Race 3: Velvet Slippers (Abel Cedillo/Bob Baffert), a $425,000 purchase by Sarah Kelly who hails from the Bay Area, flopped in her second career race. Sea Creature (Flavien Prat/Simon Callaghan), a 3-year-old daughter to Into Mischief, looked brilliant in her second career start.
  • Bob Baffert is 8 0-1-2 this meet and has not won since July 5 (Los Al's closing date).
Woodbine (Ontario):
  • Handle: $6 million.
  • Mark Casse, a rare member of both the U.S. and Canadian Halls of Fame, saddled four winners. However, he finished 3rd, 4th and 10th in the feature race.
  • Race 6: Jolie Olimpica (Luis Contreras/Josie Carroll), a 5-year-old Brazilian mare, improved to a sweet 10 6-3-1 record following a victory in the Grade 2 $175,000 Nassau Stakes.
  • Leading jockeys: Emma-Jayne Wilson and Kazushi Kimura both have 28 wins.

Saturday, July 24, 2021 (Part 2 of 2)

Saratoga (New York):

  • Handle: $29.8 million. Paid attendance was 30,184. I mentioned prior to the meet's opener, which began earlier this month, that there was high anticipation from insiders to locals to nearly everyone associated with the sport. More so than usual and that is saying something. Saratoga's summer meet is among the sport's most desired and so far has not disappointed. It truly is a destination!
  • Million Dollar Pools: Over a million dollars in fresh money in the Pick 4 and Pick 5 pools in the finale.
  • Hall of Famer Todd Pletcher had just one win at the meet entering today. He won twice.
  • Future Hall of Famer Chad Brown had just three wins at the meet entering today. He won twice.
  • Race 1: Todd Pletcher finished 1st and 2nd. OK, that was the start of something normal. Right? Not really.
  • Race 2: Pathetique (Tyler Gaffalione/Phil Bauer) was sent off at 5-to-1 from a 15-to-1 morning line to win a $100,000 maiden special weight. The 3-year-old filly was out for the second time having previously run at Churchill Downs. This was one of the races that held my attention this day. Baby races at the Spa can be awesome and as I noted yesterday Kentucky connections have been quite successful so far this meet.
  • Race 5: Maracuja (Ricardo Santana, Jr./Rob Atras) won the $500,000 Grade I Coaching Club American Oaks defeating Malathaat (John Velazquez/Todd Pletcher) in a thriller. The 3-year-old filly, sent off as the largest odds at 14-to-1 in a field of four, defeated a 2-to-5 shot who entered a perfect 5 5-0-0. Winnipeg born Rob Atras, in his mid-30s, trained his first Grade I winner. The filly was bought for $200,000 by owners under the name Beach Haven Thoroughbreds of whom I am unfamiliar (11 lifetime wins).

Maracuja_winners-circle_2021CoachingClubAmericanOaks.jpg

  • Race 6: Midnight Worker (Luis Saez/Todd Pletcher) won at 10-to-1. The first-time starter looked solid.
  • Race 7: Sifting Sands (Manny Franco/Chad Brown) won at 28-to-1 and set the universe ablaze with the payouts:
    • $1 exacta $733.
    • $.50 trifecta $2200+
    • $1 double $197.25 -- that is Todd Pletcher and Chad Brown at a New York track!
    • The $1 Pick 3 over $5,100.
    • The $.10 super over $5,300.
  • Race 8: The $.50 Pick 5 paid over $219,000.
  • Race 10: Caravel (Irad Ortiz, Jr./Elizabeth Merryman) won the Grade 3 $200,000 Caress Stakes. The PA-bred was purchased for $330,000 by the trainer Merryman, who won her first graded stakes ever, and celebrity chef Bobby Flay, who is majority owner. Caravel is a solid 9 7-0-2 lifetime. The filly won at Presque Isle and Penn National (two PA tracks) and advanced to a winner in her first graded stakes attempt. Following the win, the horse was transferred to the barn of Graham Motion.

  • Race 11: Mike's Girl (Jose Ortiz/Charles L. Frock) won the finale by a nose at 10-to-1. The $.50 trifecta paid over $1,100. The $.10 super paid over $2,200. Frock has been training since the 1970s and this could very well be the first starter he sent into Saratoga. A typical "Anything can happen in a New York finale" race.
  • Maryland, My Maryland: The winning trainers in the last two races are Maryland connected.
  • Jockey standings: Luis Saez leads with 14 wins and the Ortiz Brothers have 13 each.
  • Trainer standings: Five trainers have five wins apiece and all of a sudden one of them is Chad Brown.
  • Hall of Famer John Velazquez is 26 0-4-1. He lost today on board a 2-to-5 morning line in a field of four. A very forgettable month.

  • Jamie Ness has resurrected his career the past couple of years. He may not be center stage but his victory total this year is third behind Steve Asmussen and Karl Broberg who have battled 1-2 in North America for every year beginning with 2016. Ness is 12 7-1-3 at mostly mid-Atlantic tracks the last four days.
Saratoga (New York):
  • Handle: More than $17 million.
  • Racing: Off the turf due to wet weather.
  • Jose Ortiz (3), Dylan Davis (2) and Luis Saez (2) won multiple times. Ortiz and Saez share the meet lead with 16 wins.
  • Todd Pletcher trained two winners.
  • Race 5: Lime (John Velazquez/Wesley Ward) nosed Air Calvary (Jose Ortiz/Matthew O'Connor) to give the Hall of Famer jockey his first win this meet. Velazquez ended the day 29 1-4-1.
  • Race 9: Royal Flag (Joel Rosario/Chad Brown) won the Grade 3 $200,000 Shuvee Stakes.

Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Handle: Over $6 million.
Del Mar (California):
  • Race 1: Risk and Reward (Abel Cedillo/Bob Baffert) won at 7-to-1 while the trainer's other entered runner Bobby Bo (Flavien Prat/Bob Baffert) placed as the favorite. The winner is a 3-year-old son to Frosted who was purchased via public auction. Among the beaten was Affable (Trevor McCarthy/Mark Glatt) who was purchased for $600,000 but is now 4 0-3-1 lifetime after his worst placement. Baffert won a race for the first time (eight sent out) since July 5.

  • Race 2: Murray (Flavien Prat/Bob Baffert), a $300,000 son to Street Sense, romped by more than 10 lengths in his debut performance. The trainer finished 1st, 3rd and 4th in a field of six. Barossa (Mike Smith/Bob Baffert) finished fourth in his debut after being purchased for $775,000. All three horses entered by Baffert had the same multiple ownership group.
  • Handle: Roughly $20 million.
Woodbine (Ontario):
  • Handle: More than $6 million. I don't have access to comparative figures but it appears Woodbine is having a strong meet.

Saratoga (New York):
  • Handle: $13.5 million.
  • The Big Three: Jose Ortiz, Irad Ortiz, Jr. and Luis Saez each won twice.
  • Tyler Gaffalione's nine wins this meet is fourth best.
  • Michael Maker trained two winners and now is in sole possession of the meet lead with seven victories.
  • Race 6: Beatbox (Javier Castellano/Chad Brown) finished fourth in his third lifetime start and he has yet the hit the board. He was a $2.1 million purchase by e5 Racing which is headed by New Jersey-born Bob Edwards who has made a fortune in pharmaceuticals with a Boca Raton-based company.
  • Race 9: Bell's the One (Corey Lanerie/Neil Pessin) won the Grade 2 $200,000 Honorable Miss Handicap as the 4-to-5 favorite. It was the first starter for both the jockey and trainer this meet. Another winner entering from Churchill Downs: that has been proficient this meet.

Goodwood Racecourse (England):
  • Alcohol Free (Oisin Murphy/Andrew Balding) won the Qatar Sussex Stakes which is a Breeders' Cup "Win and You're In" race.

Steve Asmussen
won once with two starters and the victory put him within 8 of the all-time training record.

Saratoga (New York):
  • Weather/card: Racing was off the turf for a good portion of the day and that nullified much of the interest from handicappers. One field was reduced to four runners.
  • Handle: $12 million.
  • Luis Saez's two wins elevated him to first place at the meet with 20 riding victories.
  • Michael Maker won twice, his second consecutive 2-win day. He leads all trainers with nine wins. He had seven entered today.

Bernardini, winner of the 2006 Preakness Stakes and Travers, passed away this morning at 18 (roughly 55 for a human).

He won over $3 million in just 8 starts. He continued his prodigious feats later as a top sire and broodmare sire.

He finished second to Uruguayan-bred Invasor in the 2006 Breeders Cup Classic

  • Steve Asmussen won at Saratoga and Ellis among four starters sent. He is now six wins shy of the all-time mark. He likely will set the record in early August although he sends out nine today. An almost unthinkable feat will be earned.

Saratoga (New York):
  • Race 9: Dynamic One (Irad Ortiz, Jr./Todd Pletcher) won the $125,000 Curlin Stakes. The 4725,000 colt is 7 2-2-0 lifetime and won a stakes race for the first time in three tries.
Del Mar (California):
  • Flavien Prat had a natural hat trick. He finished 7 3-1-2.

  • Steve Asmussen (9,440 wins) is 5 wins shy of tying Dale Baird (9,445) and the all-time record for victories by a trainer in North America.
th
The next three days:
(10) Sunday: Saratoga (3), Ellis (5), Monmouth (2).
(3) Monday: Louisiana (1), Indiana (1), Colonial (1).
(5) Tuesday: Louisiana (4), Indiana (1).

Saratoga (New York):
  • Handle: $32,000,000.
  • Card/weather: Exemplary. It is what Saratoga oozes.
  • Race 8: Lexitonian (Jose Lezcano/Jack Sisterson) shocked Saratoga at 34-to-1 to win the $350,000 Grade 1 Vanderbilt. Lexitonian last won in May 2020 and received a 100 Beyer figure. A tenacious fight in the stretch as the winner locked horns with Special Reserve (Joel Rosario/Michael Maker). It takes a special effort to out-duel Rosario in a battle like that. Sisterson has a penchant for the spotlight in his young career with seven graded stakes victories among 59 lifetime victories. Mischevious Alex (Irad Ortiz, Jr./Saffie Joseph) was an abysmal eighth out of nine as the favorite. The $1 Pick 3 paid $1,892.

  • Race 9: Essential Quality (Luis Saez/Brad Cox) won the $600,000 Grade 2 Jim Dandy Stakes. Essential Quality is 8 7-0-0 lifetime with only a bust in the Kentucky Derby his blemish as that race's favorite.

  • Race 10: Cross Border (Luis Saez/Michael Maker) won the $250,000 Grade 2 Bowling Green Stakes and received a 100 Beyer figure. The NY-bred is 35 10-8-4 and is approaching $1 million in lifetime earnings. He is 6-for-7 on the Spa turf, including consecutive wins in this race, which is an extraordinary figure. The $.50 Pick 5 paid over $26,000.
  • Race 11: The $1 Pick 6 paid over $149,000.
  • Jockeys: Luis Saez, Jose Ortiz, Irad Ortiz, Jr. and Tyler Gaffalione each won twice. Those four riders are 1-2-3-4 in the current standings at the Spa. Gaffalione won the opener and finale.
  • Trainers: Three of the winningest four trainers this meet are basically based in places not New York (Kentucky mainly). Those are Steve Asmussen, Brad Cox and Michael Maker, the latter leads the meet with 12 wins including two today.
Monmouth (New Jersey):
  • Race 10: Leader of the Band (Frankie Pennington/John Servis) won the $250,000 Grade 3 Monmouth Oaks at odds of 10-to-1. The 3-year-old PA-bred filly is 7 3-2-2 and ran at Parx exclusively until her last race at Delaware prior to today.
  • Race 4: Pop Pop's Boy (Javier Felix, Jr./Carlos Soto) basically wired the field at 29-to-1 as the longest shot on the board. It is just the second win of the year for the rider
  • Paco Lopez rode four winners and leads the meet in victories with 47 (up by 13).
  • Handle: Over $4 million.
Pimlico (Maryland):
  • Race 4: Hello Beautiful (Sheldon Russell/Brittany Russell) won the $100,000 Alma North Stakes and at 1-to-9. The MD-bred is 8-for-14 in her home state and 0-for-2 elsewhere. The jockey won for the 1,500th time in his career, fittingly for his wife (trainer).
The-Russells-1140x935.jpg
  • Handle: $2.7 million.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Handle: $10 million.
Woodbine (Ontario):
  • Handle: $8 million.
  • Mark Casse sent out 13 horses and three won.
  • Race 10: Punch Hard (Shaun Bridgmohan/Catherine Day-Phillips) wired the field as the longest shot on the board at 29-to-1 in a field of seven. Bridgmohan moved his tack to Canada earlier this month after being based mainly in Louisiana.
  • Race 8: One Timer (E. T. Baird/Larry Rivelli) came up from Illinois and won the $125,000 Victoria Stakes. The 2-year-old gelding is 2 2-0-0 lifetime and was a $21,000 purchase who has already earned $78,000. KY-bred, Illinois connections. Rivelli is winning at a 35% clip this year.

Saturday, July 31, 2021 (part 2 of 2)

Del Mar (California):
  • Hot rider: Flavien Prat had four wins and has been victorious seven of his 16 rides spanning the past two days. That qualifies as a torrid streak even if he gets some of the best opportunities in southern Cal.
  • Race 11: Exceptional payouts as the $.50 Pick 5 paid over $176,000. The $.20 Pick 6 returned over $146,000.
  • Race 10: Dr. Schivel (Flavien Prat/Mark Glatt) won the Grade 1 $300,000 Bing Crosby Stakes by a neck, a Breeders' Cup "Win and You're In" race. Dr. Schivel is 6 4-1-1 lifetime and has only raced at the three southern Cal tracks.

  • Race 9: The $.50 Pick 3 was over $5,500.
  • Race 8: The $2 double was over $1,200.
  • Race 7: Miss Carousel (Geo Franco/Edward Freeman) won by a nose at the fantastic odds of 78-to-1 and paid $159.00. The $1 exacta surpassed $1,000. The $.50 tri was almost $5,000. The $.10 super was nearly $6,000. The winner beat a 27-to-1 shot -- no small price -- which led to every "all" bettor saying some form of "Get up, get up, get upppppp..."

  • Race 3: Mackinnon (Juan Hernandez/Doug O'Neill), a $285,000 2-year-old son to American Pharoah out of a Scat Daddy mare, broke his maiden in his third try. The "k" is lower case. He has improved efforts each time. He is owned by Erik Johnson of the Colorado Avalanche and named after NHL player Nathan MacKinnon.

  • Race 2: Grace Adler (Flavien Prat/Bob Baffert) debuted to a win at 2-to-5. She was a $700,000 purchase in 2019.
  • Bob Baffert sent out three starters and finished 3 2-1-0. His lone non-winner was sent off at 16-to-1 and placed.
  • Handle: $21 million.

  • Flavien Prat will serve a suspension from September 7 - 13 for his DQ in the Haskell (Monmouth) a couple of weeks ago. The suspension is nationwide.
Saratoga (New York):
  • Handle: Roughly $19 million.
  • Weather: Mid afternoon steady rain caused some disruption with the card including a delay with the feature race.
  • Race 9: Jackie's Warrior (Joel Rosario/Steve Asmussen) won the Grade 2 $200,000 Amsterdam Stakes in dominant fashion. The colt is 9 6-1-1 lifetime and received some 2021 Kentucky Derby buzz after a stellar 2-year-old campaign in 2020. He is 3 3-0-0 at the Spa and that shouldn't be overlooked.

  • Race 7: Aloha West (Joel Rosario/Wayne Catalano) nosed to victory in a head bob that truly was an inch or so.
  • Repeat winners: Joel Rosario had a natural hat trick while Irad Ortiz, Jr. and Jose Lezcano both won twice.
  • Michael Maker trained two winners. He has a comfortable lead at the meet with 14 wins.
  • Leading riders: Luis Saez (24 wins), Jose Ortiz (23 wins) and Irad Ortiz, Jr. (22 wins) are 1-2-3.
  • Hall of Famers Javier Castellano and John Velazquez are a combined 93 6-10-10. A tough meet for both.
Monmouth (New Jersey):
  • Bombs: The early half of the card featured bombers which made for some attention-getting payouts.
  • Race 6: The $.50 Pick 3 paid over $3,100. The winner was sent off at 22-to-1. The $1 double was $661.80.
  • Race 5: The $.50 Pick 3 paid over $1,400. The winner was sent off at 22-to-1. The $1 double was $343.40. The longshots made winning tickets in the Pick 5 to those who hit four races correctly (no one had winners in all five races).
  • Race 4: The winner was sent off at 25-to-1.
  • Race 2: The winner was sent off at 21-to-1.
  • Richard Mitchell rode winners at 22-to-1 and 25-to-1. The prior time he won twice on the same card was July 1, 2018 at Gulfstream.
Pimlico (Maryland):
  • Weather: Early in the card, racing was off the turf due to wet weather.
Del Mar (California):
  • Race 9: Shedaresthedevil (Florent Geroux/Brad Cox) won the $300,000 Grade I Clement L. Hirsch which is a Breeders' Cup "Win and You're In" race. The 4-year-old filly is 15 8-2-4 with over $2 million earned. She was sent off the favorite and won comfortably.

  • Race 4: A win by a nose. Close finish.
  • Race 3: Pinehurst (Mike Smith/Bob Baffert) and Enbarr (Abel Cedillo/Bob Baffert) locked horns and separated themselves from the remainder of the field by at least 11 lengths in a good battle between first-time starters out of Baffert's barn. The two were the lowest odds in the field of 8.
  • Handle: Roughly $18 million.
Woodbine (Ontario):
  • Card: Seven of the 11 races were $100,000+ purses.
  • Handle: $6.7 million.
  • Justin Stein rode three winners including two graded stakes for Kevin Attard. His other win was with Jaime Attard who is Kevin's cousin.
  • Kevin Attard is 11 7-2-0 the past four racing days. That is sizzling. The Attard family has many members training at Woodbine.
  • Race 7: Souper Stonehedge (Patrick Husbands/Mark Casse) wired the field at 2-to-5 to win the Grade 3 $150,000 Vigil Stakes. He is a horse for the course at 8 4-3-0 (1-for-8 elsewhere). Pink Lloyd (Rafael Hernandez/Robert Tiller), who was not sent off the favorite for the first time in 27 starts, placed at 3-to-1. The 9-year-old runner up is 34 26-3-2 lifetime.
  • Race 8: Munnyfor Ro (Justin Stein/Kevin Attard) won the $500,000 Woodbine Oaks at 3-to-1. The 3-year-old filly won for the second time in nine lifetime starts.
  • Race 9: Amalfi Coast (Justin Stein/Kevin Attard) won the Grade 2 $175,000 Royal North Stakes. The 5-year-old mare has raced all 16 starts at Woodbine but is 6 3-0-0 on turf. She is 10 3-2-3 on synthetic.

  • David Gall passed away today at age 79. He is the 5th winningest rider in North America history and certainly in the argument for one of the top riders born in Canada.
  • Steve Asmussen (9,442 wins) is 3 wins shy of tying Dale Baird (9,445) and the all-time record for victories by a trainer in North America. He was winless with three starters today.
OIP.-mfYIBJXYEgDK-E7xAWlgwAAAA
  • Asmussen's schedule the next few days though this will be updated as tracks release cards in different installments. It could be a reach but it is possible Asmussen breaks the record at the Spa on the $1,000,000 Whitney Day card. Talk about center stage.
Tuesday (5): Louisiana (4), Indiana (1).
Wednesday (2): Saratoga (2).
Thursday (0):
Friday (2): Saratoga (1), Ellis (1)
Saturday (5): Louisiana (2), Ellis (3).

Assiniboia Downs (Manitoba):
  • Uncharacteristic (Alexander Marti/Robert VanOverschot) won the 73rd edition of the $100,000 Manitoba Derby. The Kentucky-bred was sent off 5-to-1 and paid $12.50. He upset Myopic (Jorge Carreno/Robertino Diodoro) who was sent off 1-to-5. The two separated themselves from the pack and locked horns. Uncharacteristic is 5 2-3-0 lifetime and had raced exclusively at Hastings (British Columbia). VanOverschot won for just the second time in 2021 (20 starts). He won this race in 2002 and has been training since the 1980s. More than $2.5 million bet on the card which set a track record for any Manitoba Derby Day.
