  • Steve Asmussen (9,424 wins) is 21 wins shy of tying Dale Baird (9,445) and the all-time record for victories by a trainer in North America.
Belmont (New York):
  • Closing day: The spring/summer meet which began April 22 ended today.
  • Leading jockey: Jose Ortiz pulled ahead of suspended brother Irad with a win in the first race. Jose ended with 59 wins to Irad's 57.
  • Leading trainer: Chad Brown led all trainers with 32 wins.
  • Christophe Clement sent out six starters and three were victorious. His 27 wins was second best at the meet.
  • Race 2: Charlee O (Manny Franco/Michelle Nevin), a first-time starter, wired the field at 29-to-1, the longest shot on the board.

  • Race 8: Call Me Love (Junior Alvarado/Christophe Clement) was the final stakes winner of the meet. A very heady ride by Alvarado who did his patented outside close maneuver. He was boxed on the rail but the rider never panicked. Timed perfectly!

Lone Star (Texas):
  • Closing day: Today ended the 48-day meet which began April 22.
  • Handle: The total of $13,692,325 was the largest since 2005.
  • Leading jockey: Stewart Elliott with 71 wins won his first Lone Star title.
  • Leading trainer: Steve Asmussen with 71 wins won his 14th Lone Star title.
  • Texas racing: The Gillespie County Fair is ongoing. Otherwise, Sam Houston runs QH until August 7. That track has T-bred beginning in January. Lone Star operates QH racing beginning September 17 through December 18. At last check, Retama Park was not conducting any racing as their QH schedule was shifted to Sam Houston.
Woodbine (Ontario):
  • Race 7: Easy Time (Rafael Hernandez/Mark Casse) won the $100,000 Grade 3 Marine Stakes at 4-to-1. Casse's other runner was sent off the favorite and miss the board.

  • Steve Asmussen (9,421 wins) is 24 wins shy of tying Dale Baird (9,445) and the all-time record for victories by a trainer in North America. He has nine entered Sunday, all at Lone Star (TX). He went 17 5-4-3 today.
  • Mark Casse, in the Halls of Fame in both Canada and the USA, won Grade 3 stakes within about 20 minutes in Woodbine (Ontario) and Belmont (New York). That'll help pay some bills. The same ownership, too, in Live Oak Plantation which is based in Ocala, FL.
  • Gallileo, one of the greatest studs in the sport's history especially in Great Britain and Ireland, died this morning at the age of 23. His proclivity at reproduction was legendary and his success strikes were staggering. It was rumored that his ability to cover females cost approximately $600,000 per effort; sales are normally private with his interest. He holds the international record for siring the most Group I winners (more than 90). Very fitting that one of his sons won a million dollar race today.

Belmont (New York):
  • Handle: A brilliant sum that exceeded $21 million.
  • Card: Highlighted by three graded stakes.
  • Outsiders vs. locals: Visitors dominated the feature races today. Ryan Moore should be a prohibitive favorite to win Jockey of the Week honors in North America this week. I am not sure the last time a European-based rider was named Jockey of the Week in North America.
  • Race 7: Santa Barbara (Ryan Moore/Aidan O'Brien), bred in Ireland, won the $700,000 Grade I Belmont Oaks Invitational Stakes. This was the filly's first trip to the USA and her fifth career start. The winning jockey and trainer are based in Europe. Owned by Irish heavyweights, Magnier, Tabor and Smith.

  • Race 8: Souper Sensational (Flavien Prat/Mark Casse) won the $150,000 Grade 3 Victory Ride Stakes at 5-to-1. The 3-year-old daughter to Curlin won a graded stakes for the first time. Prat is based in California and Casse spends much of his time in Florida and Ontario. Australasia (Joel Rosario/Brad Cox) was sent off the favorite but the 3-year-old Louisiana-bred not only lost for the first time in her 7-race career but she finished last.
souper-sensational-the-victory-ride-credit-chelsea-durand-1400x1120.jpg
  • Race 9: Bolshoi Ballet (Ryan Moore/Aidan O'Brien), bred in Ireland, was sent off the favorite and won the Grade I $1,000,000 Belmont Derby. His sire Gallileo passed away today. This was his first trip to the USA and his seventh career start. The trainer and jockey are based in Europe. Owned by Irish heavyweights, Magnier, Tabor and Smith.

  • Race 11: Outrageous Bet (Benjamin Hernandez/Amira Chichakly) won the entertaining finale at 20-to-1. The trainer is from New Hampshire and is the former assistant to retired Gary Contessa. The $1 Pick 6 paid over $23,000.
  • The Ortiz Brothers: Going into the final day, the brothers are tied for meet lead in wins. Irad Ortiz was suspended and based on new rules in New York (at least how I interpret them) he had to serve this weekend. He will not ride tomorrow. He last rode July 5. His brother has a chance to win the meet's title by winning just once tomorrow. That seems like a layup.
Delaware Park (Delaware):
  • Handle: Exceeded $4 million.
  • Card: Four stakes highlighted by the $400,000 Delaware Handicap.
  • Florent Geroux-J. Kent Sweezey teamed twice and both resulted in wins. The trainer took out his license in 2017 and is from Kentucky.
  • Race 9: Miss Marissa (Daniel Centeno/Jim Ryerson) wired the field at 4-to-1 and won the Grade 2 $400,000 Delaware Handicap. This was a bit of an upset as Bonny South (Florent Geroux/Brad Cox) was 1-to-9 for much of the betting period and eventually went off at 1-to-2 but she fizzled. Miss Marissa was purchased for the ridiculously low price of $11,000 in 2018 but has now earned over $600,000. Eleven of her 16 starts have been at NYRA tracks. The trainer is probably best known for Grade I winner Unbridled's Song.
AAM0xIR.img
  • Race 5: Dalika (Miguel Mena/Albert Stall) won the Grade 3 $150,000 Robert G. Dick Memorial. The 5-year-old German-bred mare was out for the 22nd time but won a graded stakes for the first time.
  • Race 4: Chub Wagon (Jomar Torres/Guadalupe Preciado) won by more than five lengths at 1-to-9. The 4-year-old Pennsylvania-bred is a remarkable 8 8-0-0 lifetime.
Pimlico (Maryland):
  • Handle: $2.9 million.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Handle: $9.4 million.
  • Leonel Reyes scored three winners. It is his first 3-win day since November 27.
Arlington (Illinois):
  • Race 7: The two longest shots on the board finished 1-2 at 20-to-1 and 22-to-1.
Lone Star (Texas):
  • Steve Asmussen trained four winners. He is within 24 victories of breaking the all-time wins record for a trainer in North America. Asmussen went 12 4-3-1 today.
  • Stewart Elliott won five times. Elliott is most famous for riding Smarty Jones. He could be mentioned in Jockey of the Week conversation. He is 32nd all-time in North America wins.
  • Race 11: Sparky Hale (Leandro Goncalves/Steve Asmussen) placed at 50-to-1 and paid $24.80 in the runner up spot. My oft-cited betting angle of using the lone first-time starter was in evidence here as the other 11 runners had seen a track. Damn!
  • Race 2: Time for Cupid (Stewart Elliott/Steve Asmussen) was DQ'd from a victory.
  • Handle: $2.9 million.
Woodbine (Ontario):
  • Handle: $6.9 million.
  • Card: Four races with purses $100,000+.
  • Race 7: Our Flash Drive (Patrick Husbands/Mark Casse) won the Grade 3 $150,000 Selene Stakes. It was the trainer's seventh win in this race including the past four years.
  • Gary Boulanger, who once took eight years away from racing, won four times. The 54-year-old native of Alberta left racing in 2005 following a life-threatening injury -- including bleeding on the brain -- but returned to the saddle in 2013. He entered today with four wins in 2021, that total was doubled.
  • Gretzky the Great, Canada's reigning male 2-year-old from 2020, was entered in today's eighth race but eventually scratched. He had a slight quarter crack and was sidelined earlier but today was supposed to be a prep for the Queen's Plate (August 22) which is one of the biggest races in Canada. I would guess another prep race will be forthcoming depending on the reason for today's scratch. Gretzky the Great won four of five races as a 2-year-old in Canada on both synthetic and turf but could not do better than a third place finish in three starts this year in Kentucky. He has three wins in seven starts lifetime.

Galileo's loss is a big blow to UK/IRE horse racing. No doubt the greatest sire ever of that region, arguably of the world

Steve Asmussen (9,425 wins) is 20 wins shy of tying Dale Baird (9,445) and the all-time record for victories by a trainer in North America.

There would be a healthy conversation as to his best horse. Gun Runner was a phenomenal athlete who ended his career with five straight wins. Others would look at Curlin with Midnight Bisou or Rachel Alexandra in the mix. He has had an assortment of talented stock, successful owners and an extensive work crew at various tracks that makes him perhaps the biggest "super trainer" of all-time. By my count, he won at 26 tracks in 2019. The countdown is on.

Asmussen, top left, from the 2018 Pegasus World Cup at Gulfstream (FL).

His 21 listed entries (this could change as some tracks publish entries at different intervals) for the upcoming few days:
Thursday, July 15: Saratoga 5; Indiana Grand 1
Friday, July 16: Ellis Park 2; Saratoga 4; Monmouth 2
Saturday, July 17: Louisiana Downs 4; Ellis Park 1
Sunday, July 18: Louisiana Downs 2
Asmussen won one race on July 13.

Belmont's 48-day meet closed Sunday to enhanced handles which totaled over $632 million. That figure is an increase of 20% from the last comparable spring/summer meet held in 2019.

Transporting those numbers to the Spa's highly anticipated meet which opens tomorrow, I expect well over $700 million bet during the 40 racing days of Saratoga. This meet will be blockbuster especially if the weather cooperates.

Grants Pass Downs, which is the largest track in Oregon since Portland Meadows was shuttered, recorded an all-time handle high of over $6.9 million for its 17-day spring/summer meet. The track opens an 18-day fall meet September 20.

Saratoga's much anticipated opening day. The race day was exciting. The weather was fetching. The crowd of 27,000+ was festive. But two inauspicious glitches from the technical end.

A photo finish in race 3 never made it to the website. Why?! Many questioned the result. The simulcast feed had the image up for a few seconds. Why not the website or Twitter for a permanent view? The photo finish section of the website said "No photo finish images have been uploaded for this day. Please check back later." That should be produced immediately. Let's see it!

Also, the total handle was delayed due minimum bets via TVG ($.20) as opposed to NYRA ($1) or at least how I understood the explanation.

All that said, the $1 Pick 6 was a massive $87,000 upon first glance but then the total was pulled from the Equibase charts?! Hmmmm. UPDATE IN THE BELOW THREAD

I guess we shall wait for both figures and the photo should NYRA decide to show it.

UPDATE: Video of the 3rd race is up on NYRA's site which includes the photo finish:

SARATOGA:
Well at least the total handle has been solved. More than $21 million bet which set an all-time record for a Spa opener. As stated yesterday, I think this meet will break the all-time mark which is somewhere over $700 million. The anticipation amongst insiders and certainly locals is at an indescribable level.

Still no official count of the Pick 6 but I feel comfy in saying the unofficial total was $87,000 but that appears to have been stricken from the official chart.

UPDATE: My eyes were correct.

Snafu Leads to Cancelation of Saratoga Pick 6 Wager - BloodHorse

Due to a tote error in the July 15 $1 Pick 6 wager at Saratoga Race Course, a limited number of wagers were placed at an incorrect base amount of $0.20.

Those wagers were canceled, and the affected customers were refunded. The refunded wagers totaling $41,793 were seeded back into the pool. As a result, the total Pick 6 pool size of $275,690 was unchanged.

The reconciliation of this error caused the delay in the reporting of today's Pick 6 payoff.

The $1 Pick 6 sequence, which kicked off in Race 5, returned $87,742.

The Opening Day all sources total handle was $21,935,534 with $4,023,700 wagered on track.

  • Hong Kong Jockey Club reported a record-setting $17.4 billion was handled during its recently closed 88-day meet.
  • Steve Asmussen (9,426 wins) is 19 wins shy of tying Dale Baird (9,445) and the all-time record for victories by a trainer in North America.
OIP.OIYpoaYcRHLZ9x5Gd6XEqwAAAA

Saratoga (New York):
  • Opening day, record handle set: Over $21,000,000 was bet which established a record for a Spa opener set previously in 2017 ($20m+). Get ready for what could be a record-setting 40-day meet.
  • Luis Saez won three times. Tyler Gaffalione and Irad Ortiz, Jr. won twice
  • Trainers: 10 races won by 10 different men, none of whom is named Chad Brown or Todd Pletcher.
  • Race 10: The $1 Pick 6 paid over $87,000.
  • Race 9: Pretty Birdie (Luis Saez/Norm Casse) won the Grade 3 $150,000 Schuylerville Stakes. Casse, son to Hall of Famer Mark, has under 75 career wins and I believe that is just his second graded stakes victory.

  • Race 8: Golden Pal (Irad Ortiz, Jr./Wesley Ward) won the Grade 3 $120,000 Quick Call Stakes. The 3-year-old son to Uncle Mo entered off a win in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint. A $325,000 purchase owned in part by Irish heavyweights Magnier, Smith and Tabor.

  • Race 5: Echo Zulu (Ricardo Santana, Jr./Steve Asmussen) romped by more than 5 lengths in her debut. The 2-year-old daughter to Gun Runner -- keep an eye on his babies -- looked splendid.
  • Race 3: An incredibly tight finish between the 3 and 12 horses. Click to "race 3" Saratoga Race Replays (nyra.com)
  • Race 1: Irad Ortiz, Jr. returned from a 3-day suspension and won in his first attempt.
Arlington (Illinois):
  • Race 8: The $.20 Pick 6 paid over $48,000.
Woodbine (Ontario):
  • Leo Salles: I saw the race but not from the head-on. That is a lengthy suspension. I don't know much of the rider as he is in his third (?) year at Woodbine. Prior to that the native of Brazil rode overseas in Macau, Dubai and Hong Kong.

  • Steve Asmussen (9,427 wins) is 18 wins shy of tying Dale Baird (9,445) and the all-time record for victories by a trainer in North America. The $360 million in which he has earned his second best all-time to Todd Pletcher.
OIP.NOVH3qSjZZz_yreIs3VQLgHaHa
Saratoga (New York):
  • Handle: $20 million.
  • Race 9: Rinaldi (Luis Saez/James Bond) won the $150,000 Grade 3 Forbidden Apple Stakes. Bond had zero wins with 35 starters at the recently closed Belmont meet. He has two wins with three horses sent out at the Spa. He is one of two trainers (also Steve Asmussen) with two wins at the meet.

  • Luis Saez has six wins through two days.
  • Joel Rosario has one win with 17 mounts.
  • Javier Castellano and John Velazquez -- two members of the Hall of Fame -- are a combined 14 0-1-0.
  • Todd Pletcher and Chad Brown, arguably the two most prominent trainers in New York the past few years, are a combined 15 0-5-3.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Edgard Zayas (77 wins) and Emisael Jaramillo (76 wins) are in a hot battle for leading rider. The meet ends September 26. Neither jockey travels much, and barring anything unwarranted the two should be battling continuously.
Del Mar (California):
  • Opening day: The meet runs though September 6. It will host the Breeders' Cup on November 5-6.
  • Record handle: More than $21 million was wagered on the card. The former record of $16 million set in 2016 was easily shattered.
  • Race 9: Flashiest (Abel Cedillo/Leonard Powell) won the $100,000 Runhappy Oceanside Stakes in an absolute thriller. With the favorite running off the board, the $.50 tri was nearly $1,000. Powell was born in France where he rode and now has an established presence in southern Cal.

Fairly sizeable lightning seen in Maryland, enough to cancel Pimlico's race day.

Delaware canceled due to adverse weather conditions.

Rain moving into Saratoga but the worse may miss that area.

Saturday, July 17, 2021 (Part 1 of 2)
  • Steve Asmussen (9,430 wins) is 15 wins shy of tying Dale Baird (9,445) and the all-time record for victories by a trainer in North America. The $360 million in which he has earned his second best all-time to Todd Pletcher.
  • Good things come in threes: Steve Asmussen, Chad Brown, Todd Pletcher and Brad Cox each won three times with victories coming at multiple tracks for all four. They are inarguably among the biggest training names in North America.
Saratoga (New York):
  • Handle: $32 million bet at the first Saturday at the Spa 2021. With approximately $75 million bet through three days -- a probable record -- good things are happenin'. As mentioned a couple or so times, this meet has been one of the most anticipated by everyone from handicappers to insiders to local business operators perhaps incomparably. The Travers Stakes this year could be among the sport's stories of 2021. :thumbu:
  • Race 10: Althiqa (Manny Franco/Charlie Appleby) won the $500,000 Grade I Diana Stakes. The filly is 11 6-2-3 and now has consecutive wins in the US after a solid career in Europe and Dubai. Summer Romance (Luis Saez/Charlie Appleby) placed. The English-based trainer teamed with powerhouse Dubai-based Godolphin to finish 1st and 2nd.

  • Race 9: Wit (Irad Ortiz, Jr./Todd Pletcher) won the 106th edition of the Grade 3 $150,000 Sanford Stakes by eight lengths in a powerful display. The winner costs $575,000 and is a perfect 2 2-0-0 lifetime. He is owned in part by Vincent Viola (Florida Panthers) and Mike Repole (Vitamin Water).

  • Race 8: Beau Liam (Ricardo Santana, Jr./Steve Asmussen) was a star in winning for the second time in as many career starts. The colt wired the field and won by a nose in a gritty effort defeating Witsel (Irad Ortiz, Jr./Chad Brown). Both colts earned 106 Beyer figures which is high. Races such as these in New York, one expects Ortiz/Brown to get the nod but the outsiders delivered a narrow win. Another thrilling finish!
  • Race 5: The Pick 3 was 9/9/9.
  • Race 4: Catch That Party (Jorge Vargas, Jr./Jeramiah Englehart) placed at 53-to-1 and paid $40.60 in the middle.
  • Race 3: The Ortiz Brothers hooked up in an entertaining finish in which Jose nosed Irad.
  • Repeats: Jose Lezcano, Manny Franco, Irad Ortiz, Jr., Jose Ortiz and Ricardo Santana, Jr. each won twice. That accompanied ten of the 11 races. The lone 2-time winner was Steve Asmussen.
  • Come on down: Javier Castellano, Chad Brown and Todd Pletcher finally broke the "0-fer" at the meet but not John Velazquez. All four will ends their careers in the Hall of Fame.
Delaware Park (Delaware):
  • Canceled: Due to adverse weather conditions. The card was underway.
Pimlico (Maryland):
  • Canceled: Due to multiple lightning strikes in the area. The card was underway.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Edgard Zayas (78 wins) and Emisael Jaramillo (78 wins) are in a hot battle for leading rider. The meet ends September 26. Neither jockey travels much, and barring anything unwarranted the two should be battling continuously.
  • Handle: $9 million.
Arlington (Illinois):
  • Race 4: Core Values (Rocco Bowen/Victoria Oliver) won by a head in one of the best races of the day. The winner was sent off 11-to-1 and nipped the 1-to-2 chalk Flown (Adam Beschizza/Brendan Walsh).
  • Race 6: Bizzee Channel (Jareth Loveberry/Larry Rivelli) won the $100,000 Grade 3 Arlington Stakes. The $19,000 in 2017 has earned over $300,000 lifetime racing almost exclusively in the center part of the country.
  • Race 7: Tango Tango Tango (Declan Cannon/Jack Sisterson) won the $100,000 American Derby Stakes.
  • Race 8: Naval Laughter (Sophie Doyle/Christopher Davis) won the $100,000 Grade 3 Modesty Stakes. The British-born jockey won a graded stakes for a rare time though she famously rode Street Band for Larry Jones.
Del Mar (California):
  • Handle: Approximately $23 million. Coupled with yesterday's record-shattering opener, I would guess this is the best weekend opener in track history.
  • Race 10: Express Train (Juan Hernandez/John Shirreffs) won the Grade 2 $250,000 San Diego Handicap. The 4-year-old won for the fourth time in 12 starts but is an impressive 4 3-1-0 at DMR. The jockey ended the first two days 1-for-19 at the meet.
  • Race 5: Censorship (Abel Cedillo/Bob Baffert), a $300,000 purchase, placed in her second effort. She had a bad break in her debut at Santa Anita. There was a little bit of hope here based on workouts. Baffert is a frigid 6 0-2-0 since his most recent win on July 5. He is 12 3-4-0 in July and 29% in 2021.
Woodbine (Ontario):
  • Handle: $5.2 million.
  • Brandon Evan Greer has been training minimally for close to 20 years. I don't know much of his past but he is 4 3-0-0 this meet. Anyone at 75% deserves a mention.
  • Leading jockey: Kazushi Kimura has a 1-win lead over Emma-Jayne Wilson.
  • Leading trainer: Mark Casse has 21 wins and is in a comfortable spot right now.

Part 2 of 2

Monmouth (New Jersey):

  • Card: The biggest day of the year for New Jersey's racing interests.
  • Fixed odds: It was expected to begin today but the final piece of legislation has yet to be signed. Monmouth was to become the first track in the U.S. to offer the betting option which is popular in some outlets overseas.
  • Handle: $17 million. The record set in 2020 exceeded $20.4 million.
  • Paco Lopez rode the entire card into the 12th race in which he was injured. He had a 3-win day.
  • Joel Rosario went 7 3-2-0 in a rare trip to New Jersey. Each of the three wins was a graded stakes and that may be good enough to win Jockey of the Week in North America. All seven rides were either for Todd Pletcher or Chad Brown.
  • Race 5: Great Island (Joel Rosario/Chad Brown) won the $150,000 Grade 3 Matchmaker Stakes in a last-to-first run. Rosario is among the best in the world at closing. The mare won a graded stakes for the the first time in her second try and seventh start.
  • Race 8: Dr Post (Joel Rosario/Todd Pletcher) won the Grade 3 $300,000 Monmouth Cup. The 4-year-old son to Quality Road was a $400,000 purchase by Vincent Viola (Florida Panthers) and has now earned $700,000 through nine starts.
  • Race 10: Graceful Princess (Joel Rosario/Todd Pletcher) closed like the wind to win the $500,000 Grade 3 Molly Pitcher Stakes at 14-to-1. The race gave the impression to being wide open and played to a surprise but this was more of a surprise than the expected or even unexpected.

  • Race 11: Tribhuvan (Flavien Prat/Chad Brown) won the $500,000 Grade I United Nation Stakes. The winner wired the field after being sent off the favorite. The French-bred was ridden by a French-born jockey who has developed into California's finest jockey.

  • Race 12: Mandaloun (Florent Geroux/Brad Cox) won the $1,000,000 Grade I Haskell Stakes, the signature race at the meet, and received an invitation to the Breeders' Cup Classic. He is 8 5-1-1 lifetime with earnings approaching $1.5 million which included a second place finish in this year's Kentucky Derby (and potentially elevation to a win should Medina Spirit be DQ'd from that win). The victory came after Hot Rod Charlie (Flavien Prat/Doug O'Neill) was DQ'd from a possible win due to causing interference to Midnight Bourbon (Paco Lopez/Steve Asmussen). Lopez was dismounted and appeared to be kicked while in a prone position; however, reports are positive regarding the rider's health as he suffered nothing more than soft tissue injury to his right knee and ankle. Lopez said he was unable to move his leg for about 10 minutes. The horse is fine as well.

Equibase says 20,000 in attendance at Monmouth today, they must have been counting the people who re-entered after going to their cars to get something to eat or drink out of their coolers because it was a GHOST TOWN. The entire picnic area was empty, all of the reserved picnic areas along the homestretch were empty save for 3 groups that rented space out - one of which was MyRacehorse as I think they sponsored a race. So they've successfully gone from having a wait list longer than season tickets for the NY Giants to....2 paying groups. The crowd on hand was mostly younger trust funders...lots of salmon pants on the bros. It got so bad at one point NJ State Troopers had to escorted some of these kids from the rail because they were cursing out the TVG analysts and saying stuff like "f*** NBC"

I'm really embarrassed at what my local track has become, hopefully management pulls their heads out of their asses and goes back to trying to attract families and allowing the BYO to return. They cannot cry poor with how much that sportsbook brings in and they do not have the resources to handle the food and beverage duties on their own, hell they ran out of ice by the 10th race today! If this keeps up we will make Delaware Park look like Saratoga.

Arlington could host racing in 2022 but then again Churchill Downs could be doing another Hollywood Park. Arlington being saved is a pipe dream but nonetheless is a beautiful and historic facility.

Jim O'Donnell: Churchill Downs requests 2022 live racing application -- but why?

The Daily Herald has learned that the Louisville-based corporation has requested an application for 2022 live dates from the Illinois Racing Board.

What the carnivorous CDI will do with the application remains to be seen.

Corporate CEO Bill Carstanjen, as has been his pattern, offered no clarification nor comment.
Dates applications for next year are due at the IRB on Friday, July 30.

The nine-member board is scheduled to hold its annual dates hearing Sept. 23.

THE CDI MANEUVER is certain to open even more ranging speculation on the future of the once global-class local oval.

With the sale of Arlington's 326 acres well along a percolating process arbitrarily designed by Churchill Inc. -- if not done weeks ago -- short-term options would include:

Saratoga (New York):
  • Irad Ortiz, Jr. had a 3-win day.
  • Racing: Off the turf.
  • Race 3: Breakfastatbonnies (Irad Ortiz, Jr./Danny Gargan) wired the field as the favorite and nosed Snicket (Joel Rosario/Christophe Clement) for victory. Snicket is 12 1-7-1 lifetime, that is definitely a resounding figure for where the horse finishes.
  • Handle: Roughly $16 million. The total through four days exceeded $90 million, a 10% increase from 2020.
Monmouth (New Jersey):
  • Handle: $3 million.
  • Race 1: Paco Lopez, who suffered minor injuries from yesterday's $1,000,000 Haskell Stakes, won the opener. He leads the meet with 35 wins.
  • Race 6: Groovy Surprise (Mychel Sanchez/Rory Huston) won her second consecutive handicap, this time the Jersey Girl handicap in a long stretch battle.

  • Racing: Off the turf.
  • Steve Asmussen may be burning money for bettors this meet with a record of 34 3-6-7.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Handle: $6,978,940 million, almost exactly the total of Woodbine.
Del Mar (California):
  • Three-day handle: $80,517,984 which includes a record-setting opening day.
  • Flavien Prat had four winners.
  • Race 9: Tizamagician (Flavien Prat/Richard Mandella) won the Grade 3 $100,000 Cougar II Stakes sent off as the prohibitive favorite.
Woodbine (Ontario):
  • Handle: $6,978,111 million, almost exactly the total of Gulfstream.
  • Race 7: Avie's Flatter (Luis Contreras/Josie Carroll) won the Grade 2 Connaught Cup Stakes.

  • Shaun Bridgmohan and Antonio Gallardo are moving their tacks to Woodbine (Canada) and will be represented by the agent of retired Eurico da Silva who was a top rider there prior to last season.
  • Steve Asmussen (9,433 wins) is 12 wins shy of tying Dale Baird (9,445) and the all-time record for victories by a trainer in North America. He won with both starters sent out today.

Parx (Pennsylvania):
  • Canceled: Rains and flooding on the track.
Delaware Park (Delaware):
  • Handle: More than $2 million.
Colonial Downs (Virginia):
  • Record handle: The handle exceeded $2.6 million which snapped the track record for an opening day.
  • High prices: Remarkable payouts later in the day courtesy of some bombers.
  • Horacio Karamanos, whose tack is in Maryland, won three times.
  • Sarah Nagle, who operates Big Lick Farm and trains mostly in the mid-Atlantic and Florida with a smaller collection of horses, won twice with three starters.
  • Race 1: The $.50 tri paid over $1,000.
  • Race 2: A 126-to-1 shot finished fourth. That had to make successful superfecta players delirious.
  • Race 7: Litigant (Jorge Urdaneta/Gerard Ochoa) was the longest shot on the board but won at 56-to-1.

  • Race 8: Puppymonkeybaby (Jevian Toledo/Sarah Nagle) won a $100,000 race at 24-to-1 which led to some of the highest payouts I have seen in quite some time. The 3-year-old filly won for the second time in three starts. She was a $13,000 purchase who has already earned $78,000 by Big Lick Farm in Florida + Virginia, operated by Nagle and her husband Reid who also trains.
    • $1 double paid a staggering $1,855
    • $.10 superfecta paid over $14,000 -- 24-to-1, 18-to-1, 71-to-1 and 27-to-1 --
    • $.50 trifecta paid more than $6,000.

  • Race 9: The $.50 Pick 3 paid over $5,600. The $.50 Pick 4 paid over $39,000.

Welder is 40 26-5-5 lifetime and a most impressive 31 25-3-1 in his home state of Oklahoma. He has earned over $1.2 million, an extraordinary figure for an Oklahoma-bred. The 8-year-old has lost both starts this year.

Vince Haliday suffered major injuries in a spill at Delaware July 15 and is currently listed in critical condition per reports. His wife Stephanie said:

“Vince remains in the ICU at Christiana Hospital,” Pastore wrote. “His brain bleeds have stabilized, however he still has not gained the ability to use his arms. The injuries to Vince's neck and lungs have made it very difficult to breathe on his own. Doctors have had no choice [but] to intubate to keep his Oxygen levels up. He is unable to speak or swallow on his own. Attempts to remove the breathing tube have been unsuccessful. Additional MRIs have shown multiple fractures to vertebrae and an additional fracture in his sternum.”
Born in Ireland, he rides mainly at mid-Atlantic tracks. Jockeying is a tough job. Best wishes are sent to him for any progress.

Every time that I am critical of a rider going wide or checking their mount, I need to remember that jockeys have more guts than any other athlete. I am incapable of taking 1/100th the physical risks that these brave souls do. It pains me greatly when they get seriously hurt. The ugly part of our wonderful game.

I echo your hopes for progress for Halliday.
