He was one of the prospects I wanted the habs to take in the 2nd round...that is, if we were somehow able to get a 2nd.

That 2011 second round was a doozy to miss out on.

Ryan Sproul

What do you guys feel like the roof is for this kid. I know he will be brought along very slowly being drafted by the wings but does he have a legit shot at being a significant dman for Canada next year and how has his play progressed this year.

A lot of views and no comments. Im gonna bump this. Im looking for if anyone has watched him play. I can get his stats from anywhere, but in some circles Im hearing the guy is a shoe in next year for the JR's and other ppl are saying the guy may not ever develop to be anymore than a depth dman. Thoughts??

He is definitely in the mix for a spot on the Jr roster, in fact, it's his to lose. He is a smooth skating Dman with an excellent sense of when to jump up in the play. The knock on him was strength and decision making in his own end but he addressed both issues this year... he can become a top pairing Dman in the NHL.

He's one of my favourite prospects. He has all the tools to be a star if he can put it all together imo. He should definitely be in the mix for the WJ's next year. The Wings had a heck of a 2nd round last year.

I'm a huge fan. I think Sproul has a TON of potential. He took massive steps forward this year, but it wasn't really noticed because of the Soo's disappointing season as a team.

Offensively, he got better in every area. He's obviously got a booming shot, but he was smarter in using it this year. Last year he became a bit predictable and team's started taking that shot away from him. But he made adjustments this year and really worked on getting his wrister through just as effectively. He also didn't force shots and got himself in better position for one timers. He also became more aggressive in skating the puck out of the zone, and had no issue with going deep and creating chances. But best of all, he did this while limiting some of the turnovers in his own end that plagued him in his draft season.

Defensively, lots of progress was made and this is marked by the fact that he finished +16 on the season...on a team that missed the playoffs. He used his size more and become more physical (although don't confuse him for a guy like Jarred Tinordi or anything). He chased the puck less and became a little more reserved, letting the play come to him.

If this guy were playing for a higher profile OHL team, I think we'd be hearing more about him. Definitely looking forward to seeing how he takes his development even farther next season.

Not a shoe in for the junior team next year but should definitely be right in the mix for that team. His cannon of a shot on the PP would be a weapon, plus hes got big league size.

Hes my third favourite wings d man prospect. Would be nice if he and Ouellet could both make the team next year

Hat trick the other night. Leading the OHL in goals for a defenseman (per game obviously but almost has the outright lead despite missing so many games with a broken arm). Putting up 1.33 PPG on an average team

He is scoring a lot lately.

I'm not such a prospect follower, aside from some Kings prospects. I follow the Ste.Marie Greyhounds (OHL) a bit because of Kings draftees Colin Miller and Michael Schumacher.

Some days ago Sproul scored a hatty and seems to score every game now. Than I clicked on his profile and saw he was a defenseman and 6'4'' as well. Is it just me, because I dont read a lot about him.

Though I do read that Ouellet is the new Stall....

New Staal you mean... and are you referring to Marc Staal? Since he is a defenseman. hehe

Ouellet seems like the safer bet of the two, but Sproul is boom or bust. At the very least, a PP specialist. Not saying that's all he's going to be. I am saying at the very least... well then one could say AHL regular. I like what I have been seeing out of both guys. They could both figure into Detroits top-4 as early a a few years from now. That's pretty awesome considering they came from the same draft year, and were taken 7 picks apart each other in the around (2nd).

Thanks

Ouellet the new Staal was something I read on the main board because people mess up his name a lot, just like Stall. :)

Sproul should have been selected to Canada over Murphy. Wanna see how terrible Murphy is? Watch him take a regular shift when Canada plays Russia tomorrow. The Russians forwards are going to eat him alive.

Far from a boom-bust type of player in my opinion. Sproul is one of the safer bets to make the NHL from the OHL as he plays a complete game and plays to his strengths well.

From all accounts I've heard he's not very good defensively.

Its pretty amazing how many goals he's scoring at the moment.

Has 6 goals in his past 4 games i believe, still needs to work on his defensive games quite a bit from what iv seen, but his offensive potential is through the roof.

Poor man's Mike Green? I've heard that he is Sproul's favorite player and their games are pretty similar syle-wise (I think). He has the potential to be very good offensively but it remains to be seen how well he progresses.

Put it this way... If he and Ouellet pan out, Detroit's top four will be back with a vengeance in 3-5 years.

I think people underrate his defensive game a bit. He's not terrible defensively by any means and with the way defensemen progress I'm not too worried about it, Detroit will give him plenty of time to develop that side of his game. But his offensive game is elite. If Spott wasn't Team Canada's coach I'd have to think Sproul would have made it over Murphy

But he couldnt make a 4th place team Canada over Ryan "2 assists with tonnes of PP time" Murphy.

Hes actually tearing up right now, making team Canada look stupid

Does any defenseman in the CHL have a better GPG than Sproul? (.52 goals per game)

No Sprouls only a couple goals off the d man goal lead with like 15 less games played then the guys ahead of him, top 5 in dman scoring too. Not even Hamilton has a better point per game average
