#1: C Shane Wright - Kingston, OHL
Don’t think I can say anything that is hasn’t already been said. It’s Shane Wright. He is the best prospect for this draft. He is a cornerstone player you can build your franchise around, best to not overthink this one.

#2: C Logan Cooley - USNTDP, USHL
Talented two-way forward - great skater with impressive hockey IQ. Reads the play well and is good at anticipating where the puck is and where it will be.

#3: LW Juraj Slafkovsky - TPS, Liiga
Had his coming out party at the 2022 olympics where he was named as the tournament MVP. High upside winger is a good skater with a tremendous shot.

#4 RD Simon Nemec - Nitra MHC, Slovakia
Mature beyond his age. Nemec is the top defender in this class. His poise and confidence is what really stands out when on the ice. Has great positioning and is smooth skater. He is everything you want in a modern day defender.

#5 C Matt Savoie - Winnipeg, WHL
Skilled, quick and plays with an edge. Savoie works the perimeter really well, he pulls defenders in who are thinking he’s going to shoot only to make a sick pass to one of his teammates. He reminds me a-lot of Tim Stützle during his draft year.

#6 RD David Jiricek - HC Škoda Plzen, Czechia
Devastating injury at the WJC derailed his season. Jiricek is a steady, smooth skating defender that has tremendous edge-work and one the best shots in the draft from the blueline. Your prototypical two-way defender.

#7 RW Joakim Kemell - JYP, Liiga
Kemmel had a real good start to the season in the Liiga but has cooled off since the WJC. Kemell is very competitive with a wicked shot and plays a rather physical game.

#8 RD Tristan Luneau - Gatineau, QMJHL
1/2 of Gatineau’s two high end right handed defenders eligible for this years draft. Luneau possesses very high defensive hockey IQ where his stick work and gap control really stand out. He has a good first pass and projects similarly to Charlie McAvoy at the next level.

#9 RD Noah Warren - Gatineau, QMJHL
The other half to Gatineau’s high end RHD eligible this year. Defencemen like Warren are difficult to find in todays NHL. Physical, 6’5” fluid skating right shot defender that is a wall once the puck gets into his own end. Warren has some questions about his offence, yes - however you won’t find many prospects that have his combination of size, skating and physicality - he’s a unicorn in that regard. He really had his coming out party at the prospects game and I wouldn’t be shocked to see him taken in the top-15 now given how the NHL is trending back to big, physical defenders.

#10 LW Cutter Gauthier USNTDP, USHL
The big forward is an intimidating presence whenever he hits the ice. He has a deadly wrist shot and can beat you from wherever on the ice. Gauthier is a good distributor of the puck and plays a solid, physical game.

#11 RW Jagger Firkus - Moose Jaw, WHL
This is a guy that continues to impress me and has rocketed up my draft list. Small but ultra competitive forward with a deceptively good shot. His speed and skill is on display the moment he touches the ice.

#12 RW Danila Yurov - Metallurg, KHL
Yurov is a smart two way player that has excellent playmaking abilities. At times it looks like Yurov thinks the play 2 steps ahead of his opposition because of his high hockey IQ.

#13 LD Denton Mateychuk - Moose Jaw, WHL
Undersized yet dynamic defender. Mateychuk is at best in transition and having the offence flow through his stick. Mature and able to change up his game based on what his team needs him to do.

#14 W/C Filip Mesar - HK Poprad, Slovakia
Skilled, smooth skating, creative forward that excels as a puck carrier. Can get caught doing too much sometimes but is good at utilizing his teammates.

#15 LD Pavel Mintyukov - Saginaw, OHL
Elite skating rearguard that can really do everything. Has fantastic awareness and poise when the puck is on his stick. Able to find passing lanes and stay calm when pressured in a breakout or at the offensive blueline.

#16 C Frank Nazar - USNTDP, USHL
Versatile offensive forward with excellent speed and skill. One of the more talented players available In the 2022 draft.

#17 RW Jonathan Lekkerimaki, Djurgardens IF, SHL
Lethal sniper with an accurate and powerful release. He reads the play well and regularly creates opportunities out of nothing plays.

#18 C Marco Kasper - Rogle BK, SHL
Well-rounded two-way centre is a fantastic skater. He uses his strength and speed well to either create scoring chances or shut-down the opposition. Can also be a pest to play against.

#19 LD Kevin Korchinski - Seattle, WHL
Your prototypical smooth skating puck-moving defender that are becoming more and more relevant in todays NHL.He could work on his play away from the puck but his raw physical tools make him an intriguing player.

#20 C Rieger Lorenz - Okotoks Oilers, AJHL
Ultra competitive playmaking centre does everything to help his team win and isn’t afraid to throw around the body. Definite Sleeper.

#21 C Brad Lambert - Pelicans, Liiga
Lambert’s Dynamic skating and elite puck skills make him one of best transition players in the draft and overall one the most interesting players available in the 2022 NHL draft. There are real concerns regarding his IQ and production.

#22 RD Ryan Chelsey - USNTDP, USHL
Two-way defender has a cannon of a shot. Good at starting breakouts with his skating and passing ability. Solid defender in his own end and does a good job maintaining his gaps. Safe bet to be a top-4 defender at the next level.

#23 C Luca Del Bel Belluz - Mississauga, OHL
Skilled centreman has turned heads this year with how much he had progressed since his rookie year. Del Bel Belluz is a high skilled forward that has one of the higher ceilings in the draft. Skating at the next level is his biggest concern.

#24 C Connor Geekie - Winnipeg, WHL
Big, skilled, and has a phenomenal shot. Whats not to like?… Well, for a big guy I find he strays away from using his frame, and rely’s on his teammates to retrieve pucks too often. He could dominate in the corners but at times he’ll float in the slot awaiting a pass for a shot. Geekie has fantastic tools but he is a boom or bust prospect to me, he needs to learn how to use his frame more effectively to make it at the next level

#25 RW Jimmy Snuggerud - USNTDP, USHL
Well rounded forward with a versatile offensive game. Good at generating offence off the cycle and can score from anywhere on the ice.

#26 LD Owen Pickering - Swift Current, WHL
Mobile defender with good size, Pickering is a late bloomer who is still very raw. Once he fills out his frame Pickering should be a real intriguing player to watch out for.

#27 LW Isaac Howard - USNTDP, USHL
Gifted offensive winger with a quick release. Howard is consistently creating scoring chances for himself and his teammates.

#28 C Paul Ludwinski - Kingston, OHL
Hard working two-way centreman that skates well and has high-end vision. Gets overlooked in Kingston for obvious reasons and should produce more offence next season with a lot of Kingston’s core moving on.

#29 LW Liam Ohgren - Djurgardens IF, SHL
Skilled forward with good size, Ohgren is excellent with the puck because of how creative he is. Has good poise with the puck, seldom panicking to make a decision.

#30 LW Vinzenz Rohrer - Ottawa, OHL
Hardworking goal scoring winger is a strong skater that reads the play well. He can be difficult to knock off the puck and battles hard along the boards. He has an underrated shot that can fool opposing goalies with how hard it can be.

#31 C Rutger McGroarty - USNTDP, USHL
Intelligent forward that is very competitive. Although his skating is a concern, McGroarty plays the game hard where his hockey sense allows him to produce at a good rate.

#32 C Matyas Sapovaliv - Saginaw, OHL
Big two-way centre has strong offensive awareness and vision. Has shown to be a good distributor. If he improves his skating and fills out his frame he could be beast.

#33 RW Dmitri Buchelnikov - SKA-1946 St. Petersburg, MHL
Creative offensive winger has a deadly one timer.

#34 RD Maveric Lamoureux - Drummondville, QMJHL
Mean, mobile 6’7” defender has a very raw skillset.

#35 RW Jordan Dumais - Halifax, QMJHL
Offensive winger is undersized but continues to produce.

#36 C Tucker Robertson - Peterborough, OHL
Went undrafted last season, surely won’t be the case this time around.

#37 C Jack D. Hughes - USNTDP, USHL
Plays a safe two-way game, low upside, high floor guy

#38 LW Alexander Perevalov - Lokomotiv Yaroslavl, KHL
Great playmaker with a nice offensive skillset, has a bomb when taking a one timer.

#49 F Adam Ingram - Youngstown, USHL
Smart offensive forward has good puck skills and vision.

#50 RD Elias Salomonsson - Skelleftea, SHL
Solid two way defender needs to work on his decision making.

First question that pops to mind for me is, what makes you see such a large gap between Cooley and Nazar?
good top 5. Only thing that’s jumps out at me is nazar at 16. Reasoning?

First off I feel Cooley will be a center at the next level whereas Nazar, I see him being more of a winger.
It’s not a knock on Nazar and his ability’s, he’s a fantastic hockey player. I just like the 15 players above him more at this point. This list is very fluid where anyone from number 17, up to number 7 can move up, or down depending on how I feel that particular day.

I never necessarily liked the “ranking” parts of lists anyway because it makes it seem as if there is a large disparity between two things on the list when in reality there isn’t.(Like here between Nazar, Cooley) Maybe next time I add a tier system to it also?

I’d also like to point out that Ivan Miroshnichenko was not included on my list. Because of his diagnosis. I figured it’d be best to leave him off out of respect.

On a scale of 1 to 10, with 5 being average, how would you rank this draft?

How would you rank 2023?

This draft would be a 7/10 for me. Good, but not great top end talent with amazing depth going deep into 3rd round.

I think 2023 will be one of the better drafts in a long time, maybe even best since 2015. Could very well end up being a 10/10 but it’s safer just to go 9/10.

Why can no one agree on Sapovalev and Kulich.. eg. here you have one in round 2 and the other in round 1. I've seen this all over and it keeps flip flopping. They seem to be 30 spots apart but no one agrees on who goes first.

I like Sapovaliv more because of how big he is, paired with his playmaking ability’s. I really believe he could be a similar player to Martin Hanzal in the NHL.
Kulich is fast but likely tops out as a 3rd line penalty kill specialist.
I like both players but Sapovaliv has the higher ceiling IMO.

I am really surprised how high you have Warren and Luneau
I feel Luneau gets overlooked because he doesn’t have eye popping offensive production. McAvoy had the same problems in his draft year, where he got overlooked to an extent because of his offensive production and I believe Luneau projects very similarly to McAvoy.

As for Warren - I’m extremely high on the kid (obviously)… and he’s another guy that is getting overlooked because of lack of offensive production. You have to think at some point that maybe it’s a system problem in Gatineau and not necessarily the players faults. Both of these guys looks excellent on both ends of the ice in the prospect game playing against the best of their peers. Maybe i’m putting too much stock into their defensive performance but I think both players will be elite defenders once they reach the NHL.
