Looking for some help on my annual rating project. Shouldn't take more than 15 mins if you watched most of the Red Wings games last season. So the areas that we're rating are on a five point scale and go as follows:
  • Player Role: This is really what type of player they are, and specifically where they would slot into the average NHL team, not necessarily Detroit. So they could be Elite/All-Star, 1st liner, 2nd liner, 3rd liner, 4th liner/Scratch, Minor leaguer, High-end prospect, Low-end prospect.
  • Skating: Straight ahead speed should be the primary consideration. Rate on the provided scale where 1 is the lowest, 5 is the highest and 3 is average.
  • Defense: Overall defensive skill but primarily gap control and using their stick and body to neutralize an attacker. Rate on the 1-5 scale.
The Scale:
5 - Well above average
4 - Above average
3 - Average
2 - Below Average
1 - Well below average
(In reality some player could be a 0 or 6, for example McDavid would rate as a 6 in skating, this would be an extremely rare case and most teams won't have a 0 or 6 in any area)

I need only 2-3 submissions, and the help is extremely appreciated!

For reference, here are the players that I'm looking for:
Sam Gagner
Dylan Larkin
Christoffer Ehn
Luke Glendening
Robby Fabbri
Valtteri Filppula
Frans Nielsen
Justin Abdelkader
Adam Erne
Brendan Perlini
Tyler Bertuzzi
Dmytro Timashov

You should make a survey with qualtrics or something.

I've been doing it this way for 5+ season on HF, but I think you might be onto something mainly because the formatting would be completed up front and i'd probably get more responses. I'll definitely have to consider it for next summer. Thanks for getting me to think about a new easier direction!

I work with Qualtrics for a living but I don't know the answer to this question - Can anyone just sign up and create their own surveys for free?

EDIT: I'll be damned... You can. Or at least it looks that way.

Ha, same. I send out surveys weekly. I always assumed it was expensive to use their service. I'm sure it is for the university, but it's cool I could make my own free, scaled back project.

I've been tempted to share with you some of the data we've collected on attitude and behaviors in regard to (blank) wearing.

In blank, let's just say the word rhymes with task, haha.

I'm feeling rather off the cuff right now just to give a fair warning.

Can you elaborate on your player roles? Looks like you have Glendening higher than Larkin? I think for that part you were supposed to put 1st liner/2nd liner etc.

Oh I thought it was "Rate this player for what their role is." So I'm rating Larkin as a first line player while I'm rating Glendening as a checking line player.

Tuukka Rask jersey wearing? :naughty:

E: If you wear a Rask jersey, you are a probably a jerk.

This is great, only thing I'm really looking for on player role though is literally labeling them by role. So Larkin should be "1st line" and Abdelkader should be "4th line", etc.

You can look that up easily. Doesn't knowing how well they are doing in their role a better question to ask?

Gotcha. Are you ranking Bert and Mantha as 1st liners? You think they are better than Larkin relative to other first liners?

I may be overthinking it in combination with the admission that I'm harder on Larkin in general.

Like for Bertuzzi, it's the first line guy who is supposed win battles along the boards and provide the net front presence. I feel like he's above average at that in comparison to his competition. For Mantha, his role is to be the big, talented scoring winger and I think he's above average at that. Larkin is supposed to be our first line center, which comes with a set of responsibilities (that aren't necessarily simplified) where, in comparison to his competition, I just feel like he kind of faded overall last year. Like if he had kept up his early season production where both the stats and the eyeball test show he was a Top 10 first line center in the league I probably wouldn't hesitate to give him a 4. Overall, if anyone else believes he deserves a 4 for that, I honestly wouldn't have too much disagreement but a 3 is where my overall judgement is.

The question was more of where do they fit on an average team. I.e. Is Hronek a first pair RD on an average team or is he only 1st pair on Det.

Even then it's still not an easy answer. It kind of depends on the team. Could I see Hronek on the top pair of a championship level team? I mean, I think he could play alongside Victor Hedman and really rack up the pluses on his own accord.
