Looking for some help on my annual rating project. Shouldn't take more than 15 mins if you watched most of the Penguins games last season. So the three areas that I'm seeking input are:
  • Player Role: This is really what type of player they are, and specifically where they would slot into the average NHL team, not necessarily Pittsburgh (like Malkin would be the 1C on almost any other team). So they could be Elite/All-Star, 1st liner, 2nd liner, 3rd liner, 4th liner/Scratch, Minor leaguer, High-end prospect, Low-end prospect. (don't rate 1-5 here, just list what role they are)
  • Skating: Straight ahead speed should be the primary consideration. Rate on the provided scale where 1 is the lowest, 5 is the highest and 3 is average.
  • Defense: Overall defensive skill but primarily gap control and using their stick and body to neutralize an attacker. Rate on the provided 1-5 scale.
The Scale:
5 - Well above average
4 - Above average
3 - Average
2 - Below Average
1 - Well below average
(In reality some player could be a 0 or 6, for example McDavid would rate as a 6 in skating, this would be an extremely rare case and most teams won't have a 0 or 6 in any area)

I need only 2-3 submissions, and the help is extremely appreciated!

For reference, here are the players that I'm looking for:
Adam Johnson
Anthony Angello
Dominik Simon
Evan Rodrigues
Evgeni Malkin
Jared McCann
Nick Bjugstad
Patrick Marleau
Sam Lafferty
Sidney Crosby
Teddy Blueger
Thomas Di Pauli
Zach Aston-Reese
Brandon Tanev
Conor Sheary
Jake Guentzel
Jason Zucker
Bryan Rust
Patric Hornqvist
Riley Barber
Brian Dumoulin
Chad Ruhwedel
Jack Johnson
John Marino
Justin Schultz
Juuso Riikola
Kris Letang
Marcus Pettersson
Zach Trotman

It would be against my religion not to shit up your dataset, so good luck. (I had corn on the cob yesterday. See if you can guess which meal it was!)

I am genuinely curious as to what this project is about, and why you're doing it.

Maybe some context for your request?

It's for a set of Sim ratings that is used by different games (STHS, FHLS, HLS2) and leagues around the world. Most of it is derived from various statistics, but some things like skating and defense are things you just have to pick up from watching. The project has been running since 1999. I got involved in 2010 and have been overseeing the project since 2015.

Obviously most of HF doesn't benefit from this, but over the years many fans have participated and enjoy it simply for the mental exercise of reflecting on the previous season and sharing their thoughts on their team's players.

Well, you've got my respect. That's a time-consuming, life-encompassing labor of love. I know it, as I've been doing the exact same thing for 20 years.

Only gave answers to the ones I watched enough of (and even some might be a stretch for my credibility - so don't poke too much fun)

Some quick notes:
- Tanev is the only one I gave a 6 (speed)
- Sid/Geno I would've given elite/all-star status if this question were posed a couple years ago
- it feels weird giving the exact same speed/defense score to a 1st liner right after giving it to a 4th liner (i.e. I have both Sid and Lafferty as 3 for speed and 4 for defense)

Dominik Simon - 3rd liner; 2; 3
Evgeni Malkin - 1st liner; 3; 2
Jared McCann - 2nd liner; 4; 2
Nick Bjugstad - 3rd liner; 1; 3
Patrick Marleau - 3rd liner; 1; 3

Sam Lafferty - 4th liner; 3; 4
Sidney Crosby - 1st liner; 3; 4
Teddy Blueger - 3rd liner; 4; 4
Zach Aston-Reese - 3rd liner; 2; 5
Brandon Tanev - 3rd liner; 6; 4

Conor Sheary - 3rd liner; 4; 2
Jake Guentzel - 1st liner; 4; 2
Jason Zucker - 2nd liner; 3; 3
Bryan Rust - 2nd liner; 5; 3
Patric Hornqvist - 3rd liner; 1; 4

Brian Dumoulin - 1st pairing; 2; 5
Chad Ruhwedel - 3rd pairing; 2; 4
Jack Johnson - 3rd pairing; 1; 2
John Marino - 1st pairing; 4; 4
Justin Schultz - 3rd pairing; 3; 2

Juuso Riikola - 3rd pairing; 3; 3
Kris Letang - 1st pairing; 4; 2
Marcus Pettersson - 3rd pairing; 2; 2
Zach Trotman - Minor leaguer; 2; 1

Anything Pentel and Pilot is good by me. I also quite enjoy as nice Lamy fountain pen, extra fine.
