Looking for some help on my annual rating project. Shouldn't take more than 15 mins if you watched most of the Devils games last season. So the three areas that I'm seeking input are:
  • Player Role: This is really what type of player they are, and specifically where they would slot into the average NHL team, not necessarily New Jersey. So they could be Elite/All-Star, 1st liner, 2nd liner, 3rd liner, 4th liner/Scratch, Minor leaguer, High-end prospect, Low-end prospect. (don't rate 1-5 here, just list what role they are)
  • Skating: Straight ahead speed should be the primary consideration. Rate on the provided scale where 1 is the lowest, 5 is the highest and 3 is average.
  • Defense: Overall defensive skill but primarily gap control and using their stick and body to neutralize an attacker. Rate on the provided 1-5 scale.
The Scale:
5 - Well above average
4 - Above average
3 - Average
2 - Below Average
1 - Well below average
(In reality some player could be a 0 or 6, for example McDavid would rate as a 6 in skating, this would be an extremely rare case and most teams won't have a 0 or 6 in any area)

I need only 2-3 submissions, and the help is extremely appreciated!

For reference, here are the players that I'm looking for:
John Hayden
Pavel Zacha
Kevin Rooney
Ben Street
Michael McLeod
Travis Zajac
Jesper Boqvist
Nico Hischier
Jack Hughes
Miles Wood
Janne Kuokkanen
Jesper Bratt
Nikita Gusev
Brett Seney
Nicholas Merkley
Joey Anderson
Kyle Palmieri
Mirco Mueller
P.K. Subban
Damon Severson
Matt Tennyson
Josh Jacobs
Fredrik Claesson
Dakota Mermis
Connor Carrick
Will Butcher
Colton White

How in the world is Bratt better defensively than Nico?? Nico’s two-way game is absolutely above average.

Sorry fella, my brain will not voluntarily dwell on how our forwards played defense last year out of a sense of self-preservation.

Zacha was atrocious defensively last year. He was good on the PK but that's not the same thing as defense. At ES we got absolutely cratered when he was on the ice.

Joey was more helpful here, looking forward to seeing what he can do.

I think Joey is a good choice to put with Hughes if Jack isn't playing with the likes of palms, goose or bratt. They are a little under sized together, but Joey does plsy a bit grittier. Would need size in the other wing likely

Until he gets the hang of it and can create for anyone like Barzal I think I’d prefer Jack between two bigger players who seem to have at least some hockey IQ and some nose for the net. Foote likely wont be ready and I don’t want to force Jack to play with Wood. I’m not sure who makes sense for him for now.

The problem is that we lack the kind of players that have the skill and size to play with Jack like that. It feels like they either have one or the other. It's kind of annoying

I think Nico will become a better defensive center in the future, but for now he's average. Bratt is a little better defensively, but he's not great. Hence a 3 and a 4 respectively.

Nico skating a 5? Lol yeah no. He is average at worst

I think you have it backwards, 5 is excellent, a 6 would be McDavid tier.

I wonder if BlackJack is trolling?

He had Jack Hughes as a 4th liner.:laugh::laugh:

Not trolling, Hughes was pretty terrible last season, he wasn't ready for the NHL. Obviously I think he'll be much better in the future, but for now that's where he is.

One thing, wasn't Zacha playing at five on five with Gusev and Bratt who are largely the two forwards in most need of sheltering defensively outside of Jack?

Also, the Joey chart is subject to sample size. I know all forwards are supposed to have a role in playing defence, however, the excess shots per hour were largely being generated from his side right wing side of the zone. Sorry, I guess I really don't understand utilizing those defensive charts for wingers.
