Kane not close. The top 5 seasons are well separated in my book

Ovechkin 09. On top of Hart, Lindsay + Rocket, possibly another Ross if not missed games. Offensive and hitting machine.

Didn't OV 09 come ahead of Kane 16 like 2 months ago in the "best season post lockout" polls? What's changed in the last 2 months?

Yup, beat prime Crosby, Stamkos and Ovechkin for the scoring title.

Not to mention guys like Giroux, Seguin, Benn, Tavares etc

None of those guys had particularly great seasons though. It's a lot like Crosby in '14, where there wasn't any other player having an truly elite season to compete with, so he looks better against the field.

Besides likely different voters, I'm assuming part of it is people reading into "best" vs. "most impressive". Kane was a more dominant scorer relative to his peers, which could be seen as more impressive, even if he wasn't actually better (both due to different levels of competition, and Ovechkin being a significantly better play driver at the time).

Has to be Kane, he had no peer that year. Ovechkin in 08-09 was a beast, but Malkin lead the art ross race from beginning to end, and Crosby was not far behind either.

Why should it matter if he had peers though? There's only ever ~3-5 players usually who can be a step above others as the best in a season. Just because none happened to do well other than Kane that season, it's better? So changing nothing whatsoever to what Ovechkin did - if Crosby and Malkin had bad seasons in 2009, his would be better? What if Benn and Crosby did better in 2016, Kane's would be worst?

We should be able to judge seasons without relying on what other specific players did.

Forsberg played on one foot

Good to know. That probably explains why he won't be top 10 here. Maybe if he had 2 feet, his season would measure up more to others.

That shouldn't be a negative. All of the above listed were healthy and pretty much played full seasons or close to it.

Better is a relative term, so if Crosby/Malkin had poor seasons, Ovechkin's becomes that much more dominant. Besides, in 15-16, no one else even broke 90 points. In 08-09, there were (7) 90+ point scorers. Seems quite clear that Kane's season was superior imo.
