That is a steal of a contract for an offensive d-man. Perhaps Carolina will finally trade that D they been rumoured to be moving for months now.

Pesce has been mentioned many times during the season.
Faulk is due for a massive extension in a year.

It's not the only thing keeping the Wings down, but it is certainly a factor when you watch another team sign a defenseman for less. This team would look a lot better with Gardiner in the lineup instead of Abby FOR THE NEXT 4 YEARS. (That's the part that pisses me off, if it was only a year or two, it wouldn't matter so much.)

Edit: Plus one of them has trade value, the other has negative trade value, so it limits future flexibility as well.
