I have no problem with this. Werek didn't progress that much it seems. I feel like some are making a little too much of his "attitude issues," but they're there nonetheless. If the team wasn't going to sign Werek, better to get something for him.

I like this trade.

who knows it may turn out well. Good thing is this kid is solid on Faceoffs and I could see him as a 4th line/Pker rather soon since he is a tough league.

Let's see what happens. I read Lindberg played with Fasth add in Hagelin and that's some good young Swedes for Henrik to chill with

btw its a 2nd rounder for a 2nd rounder

i figure this trade just means the Rangers decided they didn't want to sign Werek or that Werek was not gonna take a really low offer from Sather.

I don't understand this trade at all. I haven't seen Werek play, but from what I understand he was a solid prospect? are we just doing more favors for Phoenix? maybe Werek didn't want to sign.

yeah cause thats what Sather did this morning. Sat back and tried to think how to help Phoenix out. :sarcasm:

Werek had to be signed by June 1st or he was going back in the draft. Maybe the rangers couldnt/didnt want to sign him and they traded him for whatever they could get.

werek was most likely projected as a winger in the nhl right? well we got young wingers in dubi and callahan already in the nhl and among prospects kreider, grachev, mza, hagelin, thomas were all ahead of him as well. even if lindberg is just a 4th line player his value as a ridiculously good faceoff man is great in a 4th line Center role. u usually never see young players that good at faceoffs. to be over 60% in the SEL as a 19 year seems crazy.

I don't think Werek projected to be much more than a 3rd liner...

Should it upset Ranger fans that they didn't sign their 2nd round pick from '09 draft, meanwhile others drafted after him look like very good players?

wow. lots of bs being written here. i have friends in kingston and they told me for sure, werek isnt a hot head or a problem at all. ask mike del zotto, those 2 have known each other their whole lives.

i have no idea why he was dealt but im telling you guys that he wasnt a discipline problem. in fact, when he was drafted, he was lauded for his maturity and leadership. hes very well spoken and as an aside, was one of the few jewish players weve ever drafted.

and if i remember correctly, when he was drafted, some guys had him as a late first rounder including iss and the hockey news. pretty sure he wore a letter for the fronts as a 17 yr old too. pretty impressive.

hes actually a centerman and projected to fill a role that is pretty crowded right now. we seem to be 3c heavy with incumbent arty, the recently signed roman horak and boyle. he probably would have played wing rather than center as a pro but still, im thinking its more that he was not filling a need, may have been unwilling to sign his elc and thus, we moved him for a prospect rather than lose him for nothing.

remember, this kid was heading to bu a few years ago and is very intelligent. he was looked at as a power forward type prospect. he has tools, including really nice hands and a good accurate shot. he was a goal scorer. his skating wasnt strong but he could get around no problem. his first few steps were kinda slow. he would have scored 40 2 years ago for kingston if he hadnt blown out his knee.

teams change their minds on prospects. seems this is what this is more than some attitude problem. hes been hurt alot it seems so maybe that played into it.

lastly, i am very happy roman horak was signed as i thought he would be the better player over werek anyway.

Eh, whatever. He struck me as a good pick at the time, and I think most scouting services and individual scouts agreed. Just didn't pan out for us unfortunately. It sucks, but it happens.

Lindberg is a second round pick as well, so rather than focusing on Werek and what he is/isn't, I think the focus shifts to what we have in Lindberg. He could still become a decent player.

Leslie spoke to discipline problems. Is she making it up, wrong, or does she have knowledge of something your friends don't?

good question. i will try to followup with those guys.

all i know is that he was very highly thought of in kingston, although last year was a tough year for him and the fronts organization as a whole. wereks season ended poorly.

but, as i said, you dont wear a letter as a 17 yr old for the fronts unless you are good people.

hes an outspoken, care free personality from what i was told. he may have rubbed the wrong people the wrong way. who knows.

I believe that I said discipline problems; I meant with his game; not saying anything about behavior off the ice. There were questions within the organization as to whether the Rangers should sign him, so they traded him. As far as I know an ELC was not offered.

Cool. Thank you for clarifying, Leslie. I wasn't trying to put words in your mouth or anything. :)

im thinking they got a good look at werek in the playoff series against christian thomas and the gens. they saw first hand what werek did on the ice and it prolly didnt sit well with the staff.

im only guessing here though.

I did say problems, not issues, but in either case, what I meant was about his game. As i said in another comment in this thread, I never have seen anything but decency and being respectful from Werek. He's smart, articulate, and proud of his heritage. I thought that he was a good character kid, who has really had some bad breaks physically and developmentally. As I said above, I am hoping this new start will really help him.

he has a very engaging personality from what i hear and is quite popular in kingston.

good luck to him.

Love this trade. Love Lindberg. He was one of Sweden's best players in this past WJC after being drafted this past draft. I wanted him at the draft badly.

He plays a hard-nosed game, is a very hard-worker, battles all over the ice and has good offensive awareness. He is on a VERY good development curve as he is, defensively, NHL ready right now. He will be able to create offense from defense and is a VERY good skater.

Comparable players:
Mike Peca, Chris Drury.

I think he has 2nd line center upside while his downside is that of a solid 3rd line center. I think he will be better than Pahlson.

He also played with Fasth in the WJC.

I liked Werek. I thought he would bring some grit to the team with his size. But with his injuries, if it is true they were unsure whether to sign him at all, this is a GREAT deal.

Nice.

Reading this post makes me feel good about the trade.

Hope Werek thrives with Yotes.

I remember a lot of rage being over why Sanguinetti wasn't packaged to land Ottawa's draft pick (Tarensenko) that St Louis nabbed for Rundblad.

That would have been very annoying to listen to as well.

If every team's fanbase got upset over every pick who didn't work out as well as some of the people who picked after them, this board would be empty because we'd all have killed ourselves by now.

Son of a *****. Figures. The team makes a draft pick I LOVE and of course they trade him.

I have no problem with Lindberg. He's a solid prospect, and I love Swedes. Werek, however, brings many of the same strengths. Those people that are comparing Lindberg to Drury...what about Werek??? I think the Drury comparison is even stronger with Werek, although he's more physical (which is good).

I thought the Werek pick was FANTASTIC and I think this is a move that will be regretted. Werek is a heart and soul player, he's a leader, he's very good defensively, he can chip in offensively. He had a tough season this year, but that's not a reason to give up on the guy.

Mistake, IMO.

Can't believe people get so riled up about a prospect who was projected to never become more than a third liner. I think getting a face-off specialist will be very useful. why do you think the Rangers acquired MacTavish at the 1994 trading deadline?

No one knows whether Werek would "never become more than a third liner." People never thought Cally would be more than a third liner either.

The people that don't like the trade are going to say he had the upside of a 2nd liner, and the people that do are gonna argue that he was a purely 3rd line prospect. No one knows either way, and we're all gonna have to wait a few years to find out who the winner of this trade is, if there is one at all.

• His mother’s cousin, Jan Erixon, has coached Lindberg throughout minor hockey and has had a big influence on his career – Erixon was drafted 30th overall in 1981 by the Rangers and he played 10 seasons in New York (1983-93).

He is related to Jan Erixon.

Well his uncle or whatever was one of the better D forwards the org has ever had...and he could really hang onto the puck. If we get that and a bit more offense than uncle could manage this would be a great trade.
