What Makes a Prospect?
A player will be considered a prospect until he meets the following criteria:

If a prospect is a skater (forward, defenseman) and has played in 65 NHL games or more before the completion of the season of his 24th birthday; or, if a goaltender has played in 45 NHL games before the completion of the season of his 24th birthday, that player will be considered graduated to the NHL. Conversely, if a player completes the season of his 24th birthday without passing those milestones, then that player will no longer be considered a prospect by Hockey’s Future, regardless of the player’s status with his NHL club.

An NCAA player who signs his first contract at or above the age of 22 has three years to meet the above criteria (65/45), while those NCAA players that turn pro under the age of 22 will be subjected to the criteria above.

European players who sign their first NHL contract at or above the age of 22 have three seasons from the time they sign that contract to meet the above criteria. Those European players below the age of 22 that have signed a NHL contract will be subjected to the criteria in section one.

NOTE: These are general guidelines and should be followed the majority of the time but certain players may still be listed as prospects if circumstances warrant.

Somehow I always manage to forget that Georgiev is actually younger than Shesterkhin.

Could be a hell of a fight between those two if Shesty makes the transition to NHL ice quickly.

interesting to see Sylvestre included

if considering Maine, should F Ted Hart, 23, just out of Yale, be a candidate for listing?
Ted Hart at eliteprospects.com

it really doesn't matter and they are appropriately marked as being on AHL/ECHL deals. but I tend to feel that this thread should be for rangers prospects only and guys that aren't rangers property don't belong and can be discussed in the hartford thread. but not something I'd be willing to argue too much, out of fear of upsetting @nyr2k2 who does an awesome job year after year keeping this updated lol

Certainly no worries about making me angry.

I used to track the guys that were invited to Dev Camp and TCT, like Read, Kinkaid, some others. I don't normally do AHL contract guys, but I thought with Jones and Zerter-Gossage in particular, there were a couple potential "Blake Parlett" guys there--i.e., maybe guys who could theoretically earn an ELC down the road.

I will probably get rid of Silvestre, since going from an ECHL deal to an ELC has to be exceptionally rare. Sylvestre was the only ECHL guy I picked because he seemed to be the only one with any actual upside.

Thank you both for the input, I do appreciate it.

I do like that players that can be considered prospects that are signed to AHL deals should be included, but keep in mind they could sign an ELC elsewhere at any given point....
Yeah. It's the same logic as to why I used to track the Dev Camp and TCT invites. Just off the top of my head, we've had Matt Read, Barclay Goodrow, Keith Kinkaid, Troy Grosenick, Nikita Zaitsev, Andrej Sustr, JAM, and Jared Coreau in camp or TCT. All those guys went on to have NHL careers of varying degrees. The success rate might be smaller for guys that end up signing AHL deals, but I still think they're worth keeping an eye on.

There is no criteria for which AHL guys are prospects, since they don't fit HF's criteria. I just pick them. If they suck after a year, they'll be gone.

Goodrow was a guy I wanted them to sign. Sharks fans don't him as a depth forward. one reason I hope Maser gets signed, Rangers dont have enough skilled guys with grit that can be more than a Tanner Glass type of player. i had hopes for Leedahl but he looks like a bust. he should have gotten an AHL contract and someone like Zaitsev for example should have started with an NHL contract.

Zaitsev wanted to finish out his contract in Russia, so we couldn't really sign him. Then when he became available, there were a bunch of teams with interest and he chose Toronto. Kinda like Marchessault--we had him in and wanted to sign him, but he chose to sign with Columbus instead (and even then it wasn't until five seasons and a couple organizations later where he actually established himself). Sometimes there's nothing you can do.

IIRC we did elect to sign Kyle Jean over Matt Read, which was stupid. But again, no idea what the circumstances were, there.

Maser is an interesting kid. He is far from a useless clod. Kid has some skill and is certainly not short in the physical intangibles.

In his Skoda Cup game, Sjalin had an assist, was even, one shot, and led all players (both teams) with almost 22 minutes of ice time. He's one of our most underrated prospects. Health is the only thing holding him back.

What's good about the situation is that even if he needs a recovery year to come up to speed, he's got it. That's what depth does. The Rangers have 3-4 years to let their defensemen took.

All of the the 99 Born and later in control for a while, and can take their time to cook in the pros. (Miller, Lundqvist, Jones, Robertson, Keane, Ragnarrson, Sjalin)

The 96-98 borns are pressing for an NHL spot, or are establishing themselves there. (Fox, Hajek, Rykov, DeAngelo, Lindgren) plus Rauenen whose a legitimate prospect.

There will be trade chips, and the assets are going to be there to fill out a line-up.

A lot of rebuilds have been failing because of organizations unable to pick beyond the obvious top5 choices.

Also there are a lot of posters who always think it’s necessary to harp on picks like goalie Lindbom in the 2nd round (who could still proof to be a value pick) or a wasted 6th (!!!) round pick in Kjellberg. Whatever...

I wanted to give kudos to the Rangers scouting department! Our current depth is there because the organization lately has done a great job identifying good prospects all over. Chytil, Miller, Lundkvist, Reunanen, Barron etc all progressed much better than expected (or better than average for their draft spots) since being drafted by the Rangers. This recent draft seems to be following the trend with the likes of Henriksson and Robertson. I’m impressed, very impressed!

The main reason to harp on it is that considering what you get in trade for non elite goalies the reward barely matches what you invest to get him with a chance of busting.

If he was that good, then maybe a 3rd, but even before the injury he was wildly inconsistent on a loaded junior team, only looked good on a stacked national team(where you get into small sample size.)

Henriksson has some skill, had serious issues at 5v5(but who doesn’t at 18.) Years away, but so is the need.

Reunanen heads back to Finland if he doesn’t crack Hartford(which may be in the cards with Rykov, Lindgren & Day already there.) He looked good today against poor competition, heard a lot of footsteps early in the tourney.

Kakko reads the game so well, just needs to fill out a little(5lbs this year), get used to the physical game(doesn’t handle cross checks to the throat all that well for some reason) and work on his straight line speed.

Kravtsov needs to work out some kinks in his game(if anything bad is to be said about TC was that he tried to hard to be noticed at times and got caught with his pants around his ankles for it.) but he’s another guy who needs to fill out a little more to be NHL ready. He’s not Buch thin when he 1st came over, but he needs another 10-12lbs.

Maser had his moments, showed some skill and would be good to have him spend a month in Portland just focusing on the system & getting 1st live minutes while getting the stink of PG off him.

Fox is gonna be 2RD whether DeAngelo signs or not. He was putting guys on their heels and pyloning forecheckers.

Keane looked good more often than not, if things go well he’ll be on the main roster after expansion.

Skinner had some howlers day 1, but settled down and looked good more often than not. Is already putting on solid weight. This year in London gonna be very big for him.

Gross? You hope he signs with a Swiss team before you have to qualify him, thereby stopping the clock.

Rykov? Was the best Euro D for the Rangers at TC in forever. Still gonna have to learn the system in Hartford 1st.

Robertson is gonna hopefully be a two eyed, non-punch drunk Staal in a few years. Good skater, good positioning, mostly good reads.

Keane and Gross. Those are the two guys I don't get. I mean I understand the attraction to Keane. He has some skill. I can see an NHL player there. But not an impact player by any means. I thought he was really underwhelming last year before and after the trade.

Gross sucks. I don't worry about stopping the clock with him. Let his rights expire. Same player two years in a row. He's good for nothing except bad penalties.

I didn't see much with Maser. Of the guys not on NHL deals, the only ones I'd consider signing (or drafting) would be Nick Jones, and maybe Ryan Dmowski if he has a strong year in Hartford. The rest were all pretty blah.

for me the fact that keane could be a NHLer but not a game change is what makes him interesting to me as a prospect...very similar with ryan lindgren. neither will be one of the top 3 best players on their sides. but you also aren't going to keep 6 guys that should be playing 25 minutes a night and making big $$. so once the top 4 is settled and you trade top 4 guys that don't stick here, than keane/lindgren become prime candidates for a solid 3rd pairing for round out the blueline

That's fan. I've been a big cheerleader for Lindgren so I can buy this argument.

I just have seen a lot of people really hyping up Keane. Started from the moment he was drafted. I never really understood it, and I've gone out of my way to watch him. Again though, I do think he has an NHL skill set.
