Bad move. Gotta keep guys like him. Dude brought leadership and work ethic to the team. I’ll always remember his 2017 playoffs, being the one to fight Wilson, and him shooting from everywhere when we couldn’t get a shot on net against the Isles and he tried creating a spark. Really not liking this offseason so far. He wanted to be back too and be apart of the turn around and I’m sure we could’ve easily got him signed at 1 year 1 million. Just makes no sense even if we get a Giordano/Chara/Suter type vet dman. Smitty was one of my favorite players

He will always be the guy that signed a massive 4 year deal and then came to camp out of shape (Which he blamed on too many weddings that offseason).

He still played hard and earned himself back in the coaching staff's (and the fans') good graces.

4 mil is too much, but I know a lot of people here were hoping that he would sign on for another year (at reasonable cost) to be a utility vet. I wouldn't have minded either.

I liked him, wish he coulda stuck around. After his initial f*** up which he definitely owned up to, he was a good soldier, good teammate. One of the few guys with real backbone. Hope he doesn't end up in the division, but do hope he ends up somewhere competitive.

Best of luck to him in his future endeavors.

Did a solid job of redeeming himself, even if he was always overpaid.

I'm kind of surprised he never killed anybody with that open ice lunges at Barzal and others at the blueline ....he attempted MANY but it's probably fortunate that he hardly ever connected ! His buds will miss him.....somebody will grab him on a good deal that is for sure .

Dan Girardi, he was not.

Ultimately, he grades out as a C because of the good soldier role he did complete.

Likely has some organizational value in an entry-level Ortmeyer role, seems mutually beneficial given that he’s in Rye with a young family etc.

Prob wants 2 mil, we want to pay 1.25 for a 7D. It happens

I don't think it was a difference in contract demands, though I suppose the Rangers not offering him a contract counts as a difference. The bottom line is, he's good in the locker room, but not very good on the ice. We can do better.

With Smith gone, Fox becomes the senior D guy in the organisation in terms of games played. Crazy.
