Gilroy isn't nearly as bad as his reputation on HF.

He had a solid year last year. I would take Gilroy over Bickel for most games.

EDM could afford to give him max bonuses.

And he'll play on a horrible defense, making him a go-to guy. Whatever. That ship sailed long ago. I feel bad for Anaheim for him just walking out on them like that, but it is what it is.

especially for the price, geeze he wouldn't re-sign here for what 1mil-1.5mil when his contract was up, so I think this is a real good deal.

Would've loved to sign him, but Schultz's $3,775,000 cap hit (if he reaches all his bonuses) could've wreaked havoc on our lineup.

Schultz isn't worthy of the honor of wearing our jersey. He's a little brat.

This is absolutely ridiculous. This is the same franchise that signed Donald Brashear after seeing him cheapshot one of our beloved players in the playoffs. That's a case of where you don't welcome a player. Schultz didn't do anything wrong, blame the CBA, blame Anaheim for being too stingy signing him. If he signed here, you, I and many other Rangers fans would have a different perception of him.

biggest issue with gilroy in the lineup imo is the fact that the open spot is next to MDZ another offensive dman. a spot better suited for a stay at home guy (sauer )

gilroy would probably have a better chance of success if he was paired with a defensive stud like staal but i think staal will stay with stralman unless someone gets hurt.

He'd most likely be playing next to Stralman, since the top 4 are definitely Girardi, McDonagh, Staal, and Del Zotto.

Gilroy is 100 times more versatile than Bickel.

He's played top-4 minutes before with marginal results, but he's still played top-4 minutes and it was under Torts.

I'm sorry but I just see no point in playing a d-man who's going to play 8 mins a game like Bickel.

Bickel and Woywitka were turnover machines. Gilroy was calm with the puck, just too weak against bigger forwards and was outmuscled.

Welcome back.

Did they close that loophole in the new CBA?

I'd rather have Stu Bickel in the lineup over Gilroy, AINEC.

Agree. Not a fan of Gilroy. 6-7 d-men slots can certainly be improved on though. Quality d-men around the league are in short supply. Overall we're in pretty good shape as far as our defense corps.

those are the top 4 but 3 of them play the left side and i don't think they are going to mess with trying someone on their off side in a shortened season..you'll have

mcdonagh-girardi
staal-stralman
mdz-bickel/eminger/gilroy

But the deal was made under the previous CBA.

Letting Shultz count at 3.75, or whatever the max ELC cap with bonuses is, would have been disastrous next summer.

Oh, I know that. I'm just wondering if that was something they fixed this time around.

I'm pretty sure I read a tweet saying that the Schultz loop-hole was not closed.

Memorandum of Understanding:

I never wanted Schultz on the Rangers and I still don't. I don't want entitled punks on our team.

I don't care if he's a punk as long as he can play hockey.

Let's be honest, there would be a Justin Schultz circle-jerk if he was producing at a 100+ pt pace with the Whale on this board. Next Leetch comments would certainly appear.

Not from me. Never liked him, never will like him.

I could certainly see why you would want him, but for me, no thanks.

for 650 thousand dollars you could buy somehting like 975,000 rolls of Charmin toilet paper...put that toilet paper in skates, and get the same results. Gilroy is SOFT, and for an offensive defenseman the guy doesnt put up any points. cant play the boards, cant clear the crease, is scared to go into corners to make players. He can skate. Thats it.

emergency #7 defenseman, i have no problem. Id take Bickel 100 times out of 100 over Gilroy.

Yep. I would have steered clear of him. Seen as an experiment his time in Hartford this season IMO has been a failure. Offensively he got off to a pretty good start but that's even faded. Defensively he sucks. We'd be better off (if he were available anyway) signing pwp specialist Marc Andre Bergeron who pretty much has a career full of sitting on the bench waiting for the next power play to come along because his defense sucks. He at least is a good pwp guy with a nice shot.

Gotta think Bickel & Gilroy alternate as #7/8 on D (I think Eminger will be our #6) and are an emergency 4th line option if injuries occur. Bickel will be iced in tougher games - especially if Haley stays in CT and both will be juggled in and out of the lineup.

I still see us bringing in one more fwd up front for added depth. Most likely NOT through a trade. Plus some very necessary additions for The Whale.
