a thread for hockey’s forrest gumps.

how about mike wilson? late first round pick by the canucks in the loaded 1993 draft. the second wilson taken in the draft, one pick after the leafs picked landon. next three picks were saku koivu, anders eriksson, and todd bertuzzi.

traded to buffalo, with young mike peca and a first rounder that became jay mckee, for alex mogilny.

mogilny was later traded for brendan morrison, who would be an important piece of the naslund/bertuzzi canucks.

peca captained the late 90s sabres to a SCF while mckee was their #3 defenseman.

then wilson is traded to florida for rhett warrener, who was the #4 on that 1999 sabres team, and a 5th rounder.

the 5th rounder became ryan miller, and warrener was sent away to calgary in a three way for chris drury.

drury co-captained those great 2006 and 2007 sabres teams, miller was their goalie, and mckee was the grizzled shotblocking vet on the 2006 team before hitting UFA.

meanwhile warrener goes to calgary and is a steady #4 for their 2004 SCF run.

all this time mike wilson has about as nondescript a career as you can have, with career highs of 4 goals and 20 points in a journeyman career that saw him suit up for 300-odd games over eight seasons on four teams.

Joffrey Lupul was no slouch, but not the type of guy you'd expect to have been traded (among other pieces) for Chris Pronger twice.

Some other notable players involved: Jordan Eberle, Travis Hamonic, Joni Pitkanen, an over the hill Geoff Sanderson, Francois Beauchemin and Jake Gardiner.

Steve Bozek

In March of 1988, Bozek was traded with Brett Hull to St. Louis. Six months later, Bozek was traded back to Calgary as part of the package that sent Doug Gilmour to Calgary.

Edit: On the same day as the Gilmour acquisition, Calgary sent Bozek and Paul Reinhart to Vancouver.

paul reinhart is sad you didn’t mention the trade that sent bozek and him to the canucks, a trade that btw almost resulted in the 89 flames losing in the first round.

Marty McSorley has an interesting trade history.

Obviously we all know he was in the Gretzky trade to LA.
In August 1993 he was traded for Shawn McEachern. Then in February 1994 he was again traded for McEachern, with Tomas Sandstrom and Jim Paek also involved.
He was then traded with Kurri and Churla for a group including Ray Ferraro and Mattias Norstrom.

Goaltender Alex Auld was a part of two significant trades.

On June 23, 2006, Vancouver traded Auld, Bryan Allen and Todd Bertuzzi to Florida for Roberto Luongo, Lukas Krajiek and Florida's 2006 6th round pick.

In what seemed like a minor deal at the time, Ottawa dealt Auld to Dallas for a 2010 2nd round pick on July 8, 2009. The 2nd round pick became Mark Stone.

Defenseman Jeff Chychrun.
5/30/91 w/ Jari Kurri to L.A., Flyers got a 4th, Steve Kasper, and Steve Duchesne.
2/19/92 w/ Brian Benning and a 1st to Pittsburgh, Kings get Coffey.
Chychrun was later traded in minor deals, for Peter Ahola and a season or 2 later for future considerations. The first two trades were pretty good for the Kings.

1B goaltender Rick Wamsley was involved in two of the biggest trades of all time.

Traded to Calgary (as the secondary piece to Rob Ramage) for Brett Hull.

Throw in in the historic 10 player trade between Calgary and Toronto. The big name in the deal being Doug Gilmour.

Also included in a mass swap of draft picks between St.Louis and Montreal. Those picks produced notable players such as Shayne Corson.

Jocelyn Thibault spent some time as a starting goalie, and a backup. He ended up with a fairly long career, but he was also involved in 2 deals that still get talked about today.

Thibault was a first round draft pick that the Nordiques got in the lindros trade.

About 3 years later, he was involved in the patrick roy deal.

I mean he was involved in the roy and lindros deals, and he hadn't even hit 21 years of age yet.

This probably doesn't reach the threshold, but Derrick Brassard.

Traded in a package for Gaborik, and traded with a 7th for Zibanejad and a 2nd.
