McDavid has 38 games played.

Good race so far.

Wish I could see Matthews' totals without that wrist injury.

I really would like to see McDavid win the rocket for his personal legacy, to be the first player since Lemieux to lead the league in both goals and assists would lift him to new heights, a mark neither Ovi or Crosby even came that particularly close to.

Matthews is looking like he's getting hot again while the Oilers are cooling a bit so it'll be tough for him to make up that 3 goal gap, but if there is anyone who can do its McDavid.

He should have plenty of seasons where he's among the goal leaders so he'll have many shots at pumping up his resume. Should be a good race assuming health/everyone plays roughly the same number of games.

That is an absurd stat. His assist total would be 5th in the NHL in points, and he is neck and neck in the rocket race. 97 is dominating this year.

I'm fairly certain if mcdavid started shooting more and passing less he would win the rocket fairly easily.

He's just to good.

Thanks, fixed. Clearly should have had more coffee before writing the post.

He is shooting more, that's why he's well above his career pace with a similar shooting %.

  • 2021 - 3.71 shots per game/15.7% shooting
  • Career excluding 2021 - 3.08 shots per game/14.9% shooting
  • Career including 2021 - 3.14 shots per game/15% shooting
This equates for about 52 more shots per year, or approx 8 more goals than his average.

He's not getting hot again he's just able to shoot the puck again because his wrist was messed up for quite a while.

Matthews has also hit the most goal posts this season in the NHL...this guy is crushing the field with less GP than the guys closest to him

This is Matthews’ award to lose.
Typically that is true for someone who is in the lead.

I dont think anyone will catch him. He had his slump and no one passed him. Guy truly has an incredible toolset for scoring goals.

Matthew's is not getting hot again, he is feeling healthier again. He could barely handle the puck or play hard on the boards for a while, and he couldn't even shoot it. I don't even know why he was playing but he looks to be getting healthier which is good.

Matthews really wants it this year. Kid is shooting the puck ridiculously well - he picked a good year to shoot above his average.

I don’t think there’s much of a chance of AM34 losing the Richard now, only if he were to miss some serious time in the final stretch.

I wonder how the Vancouver ordeal affects individual hardware races. If those games are cancelled and the standings pro-rated in the north it might be a blow to Matthews and McDavid
