I dont want to rub anything in, because the people i got into verbal arguments with over hughes in his draft year i tend to agree with regularly over the state of our team, but i sincerely hope the dobson supporters on here i fought with can admit hughes was the correct pick, otherwise what is the point of standing your ground and having an opinion against popular opinion. Maybe its to early but i have not seen a 20 year old rookie do what he is doing.

Which person on the board did you yell at?
Gotcha ;-)

An exaggerated figure of speech, but there was several posters on here convinced no dman quinn hughes size was going to amount to anything more then a PP specialist and dobson was a 2 way beast similar to pietrangelo (I still dont see it as far as upside but i do think dobson will be good). Unfortunately I also typically agree with them over management, just not prospects. People are also free to call me out and will call me out if i am wrong as well which i accept.

This kid is magic.

He played terribly tonight and still found a way to have a huge impact on us winning the game in OT. You could tell he wanted to be a difference maker.

That's the mark of a special player.

Comparing Quinn, the 7th overall pick in 2018, to some of the players drafted ahead of him:

He now has more assists than Brady Tkachuk -- in 70 less games.
He has more points than Hayton (5th overall) and Kotkanemi (3rd overall) put together, again in about 70 less games.
He has the highest PPG of anyone in his draft class, including 2nd overall Svenchnikoff.

Just a reminder... he's a goddamn d-man! These are all forwards that he's out pacing, that I'm talking about. I mean, I know I'm beating a dead horse here, as well as preaching to the choir.... but DAAAAAMN

I understand your position OS, but Hughes is still considered an "Offensive Dman". He's not an all situations player. I still rank him in my top31, which I believe is a fair barometer for what constitutes a #1 Dman in today's NHL, but some Dobson advocates consider a #1 Dman to be: PP, PK and ES play facing the toughest competition and excelling. That's still not Hughes right now.

Hughes is about mid-pairing in terms of QoC, but his Rel CF% is still 3rd best in the league for defenders (IIRC). That means he is still generating a lopsided shot differential even if he is technically being sheltered away from the toughest match-ups. He ranks 12th in TotP/60 at ES for defenders. Still, that's not the ideal all-situations Dman some posters favoured.

Posters lock into an ideal of what a prospect can become. Everyone does this, and it's fair to do.

Quinn Hughes. What we are seeing right now during crunch time is Hughes taking his game to a new level and showing us a new gear. He's taking over games as a rookie d-man.

Man it's quite a beautiful thing to watch, a young superstar figuring out how to dominate. Have never seen this before with any Canucks d-man and probably won't again for a very long time.

No matter how you feel about management/ownership this is something special and should be appreciated on its own.

Best player in that draft. Only Svechnikov is having a similar impact

I like Brady Tkachuk but in 3 on 3 OT, he's stapled to the bench. Rather have Beagle out there

Whether this management team or future ones, I hope the Pettersson and Hughes success stories encourage them to lean more toward pure, high-end skill in future drafts as well. It was maddening watching the Canucks pick project players, big guys or supposedly "well-rounded" players year after year for so long, then depending on the GM (largely Quinn) swindling other teams out of scorers and playmakers in trades to make up for it. This is one of the reasons I'm always willing to defend picks like Schroeder or Grabner even if they don't work out – skill above all. Unless you're Michael Bay, you teach astronauts to use a drill, rather than teaching oil-drillers to go to space.

Dobson was the safe, Dan Hamhuis type pick.

Hughes was Torey Krug. Could have gone either way. But he’s somehow actually outscoring a 28 year old Krug (one of the best offensive defencemen in the entire league) as a 20 year old rookie.

What? Not a fan of Nathan Smith and Alek Stojanov?

But seriously, you need a mix of both. When your best players are tiny and/or skinny like ours are, you need bigger players with skill to insulate them, especially in the playoffs.
