He's putting up better numbers than Werenski, on a much weaker team, and is the leading scorer of the team.
That is indeed true and very encouraging.

However, Werenski is a 6’2” 209 pound specimen, and his game has therefore translated extremely well to the NHL

size is not a true measure if a player will translate to the NHL or not, hockey IQ is.

If his slap shot is just tossing muffins on net, he won’t ever be a top 20 defensman. An elite D needs to have at the least a good shot, if not great.

People saying “it can be taught”..... not really. The bio mechanics in his shot is pretty set after 15 years of doing it a certain way. Some players have it, others don’t. If it could be taught, every nhl player would have cannons. With tons of practise maybe you can get 10% to 20% better.

You are not correct at all. His shot can improve substantially.

One of the most illuminating interviews with EP40 was one where he talked about how he improved his shot. He mentioned that 2 years ago (which would be during his 17-18 year old season) he couldn’t even elevate the puck on his one-timer slap shots. To go from that to among the best one timers in the world in a span of 2 years is incredible and shows how much a player can improve their shot in a relatively short time.

You are incorrect. If there was a way to improve his shot “substantially” then he would have done this already. Same with skating , game awareness, hand eye etc. Yes he can get better but not substantial. If so, why wouldn’t everyone have cannons?

It shows how much Pettersson was able to improve his shot, not any player. You should sign up for a community college logic/philosophy course so everyone doesn't have to constantly correct you.

It’s not that simple though. Most of these guys work just as hard as Pettersson on their shot and just as hard as Horvat on their skating. This is their livelihood after all. Some just have better physical and mental tools to succeed. Otherwise the league would be full of McDavids.

Following on this;
Shooting accurately with velocity has a lot to do with coordination, good basic technique (particularly footwork) and repeatability in high pressure situations. Hard work and practice can improve technique and make it repeatable muscle memory, at least in practice. Doing it in a game situation can be different. Coordination is what I think limits the upside of a players shot at the NHL level. Pettersson has amazing coordination and the courage/ability to do it in high pressure situations. Hughes certainly seems to have the coordination, so I’m hopeful he can improve his shot substantially. It’s not a sure thing though.

Except I never said any player is able to improve their shot as much as Petey did. Perhaps you should take your own advice.

I don’t think most guys work as hard as Pettersson I think his work ethic is elite.

No, not any player, just players drafted or acquired by Jim Benning I guess? You used Pettersson as an unqualified example to support the idea that Hughes could improve his shot. You didn’t provide any reason why Hughes was unique like Pettersson. As a result, you were fairly ridiculed by many posters.

Don’t bother with JC. He’s a two bit troll that’s always looking to tell you how bad everything about the Canucks is.

Give him a break.. hes an Oiler fan pretending to be a Canuck fan. Life isnt in good right now for Oil fans. Let him have his fun.

Whatever happens the rest of the way and even if the Canucks hang around in the playoff race, to me one of the highlights of the season would be the Canucks signing Quinn Hughes and getting him into the lineup in March.

Even a few games of watching Hughes and Pettersson work together would make the long off-season a whole lot happier.

Not sure how badly Josh Norris is injured, but add that to Michigans awful goaltending and you can bet that Huhghes and Michigan isnt going deep into the tournament this year.

In a scenario where Quinn joins the team late in the season for some games, would he likely do that after we trade one of the dmen?

I hope Jim can successfully pull that off without bringing something useless our way.

Is Michigan even going to make the tourney? Only 16 teams make the tourney and Michigan isn't even currently ranked in the top-25.

2 ways they can make it.

1. Win the Big 10 Tournament

2. Do well in the big 10 tournament, and beat top ranked teams from here on out.

16 spots.

6 automatically goes to conference winners

10 gets voted in by a committee .

Them making it to frozen 4 last year probably gives them some cache' but theyre best chance is to win the Big 10 conference tourny.
