Been watching his shift by shift videos on youtube

This kid needs a lot of work in his own end if he wants to play a regular shift. With enough time and space he's generally fine, it's a big reason why he shines on the PP but morphs into Bartkowski with some pressure on him. He also really doesn't like being hit. From his blueline out he's essentially a 4th forward and really crafty with the puck, very good at fooling guys by looking off his passes and turns.

I want to like this pick but am not sold, especially with the hype he's been given. Hopefully he takes some steps forward this year.

I mean if he was amazing defensively he woulda went top 2 and we would never have the chance to get him. There is no perfect prospect you can get at 7. You can't have it all.

These flashy prospects whose stock is mostly based on their sick danglez usually make me nervous.

Do you mean when he has the puck in his own end?

Because I feel his biggest strenght is how impossible he is to pressure in his own end. He just escapes time and again leaving the forechecker behind the play.

Not exactly, the few instances I noted were when he had to retrieve a loose puck but with a checker not far behind. There were a few times his attempts at skating it out ended up in turnovers though

I mean if he was amazing defensively he woulda went top 2 and we would never have the chance to get him. There is no perfect prospect you can get at 7. You can't have it all.

Oh he went 7th overall? Ignore my post guys

Could be a great pick, but not sure how this pick is the slam dunk a lot of people are making it out to be.

He put up strong totals in his D-1 and draft season. I’d say that has more to do with being bullish on the pick than his sick danglez.
Yeah, the danglez bit is really short changing Hughes. He has elite skating in every sense of the word. His vision and IQ are as good as anyone in his draft class. His defending needs work, yes.

No prospect is perfect as they all need to prove themselves in the show. However Hughes though might lack some defensive responsibility he more then makes up for it in the offensive side. His ability to transition up ice is his biggest upside to me however of course I'd prefer he be better defensively but he can grow into that. This kid has a lot of tools to work with and is a joy to watch.

The fact that he is now the new toy, and also the fact that we haven't drafted a D-men this high in a very long time (to lazy to check the stats), it's no surprise that the hype train has gone through the roof.

Lets hope he lives up to expectations... I still remember that Cody Hodgson hype train... my god we got it damn wrong.

This is my biggest concern as well. It’s very easy to get lost in the excitement over his offensive game, but a defenseman needs to at the very least not be a liability in his own zone, lest he become a PP specialist only.

Lots of young offensive defensemen struggle with their defensive game in the NHL and that ultimately becomes the limiting factor of how good of a player they can become.

I hope he’s able to focus on this area of his game and continuously improve it, instead of just focusing on the offensive aspect of his game.

By the way Benning should be fired.

Me who is also a so called Benning hater (I just think he does a bad job btw , have nothing against the man). Love the Hughes pick. I also loved the Pettersson pick. I had both of the ranked above where they where picked (Pettersson ranked 3rd Hughes 4th).

Maybe I am just agreeing with Brackett but still, I believe Hughes will be a great player

You are too lazy to look up stats? Did you already forget Juolevi two years ago?

uh ... no, everyone got it wrong. IIRC wasn't he ranked as the top prospect in the world at one point? So it wasn't us hyping a prospect, it was a legitimate hope that he would be a league wide impact player.

Hughes looks pretty good right now. I think he impressed in the prospects tourney, to the extent I think he would have gone earlier in the draft if it was redone.

I can't imagine the prospects tourney changed the minds of anyone who's behaving with any logic.

There has not been a 7th overall pick in the history of the universe who didn't look like a terrific prospect one month after the draft.

Anyone declaring the pick a "homerun" this early is not worth any attention, especially if they are calling juolevi too early to call.

Hughes is clearly a high risk, high reward player but that's the type of pick you need to make in order to try and win a Cup.

Clearly he has defensive issues but the idea is that he can improve on that with time and his offensive skill set is something sorely lacking and not generally available.

There's a reason Dahlin went #1 as he's perceived as great all round and Hughes went #7.

No prospect is perfect but given the lack of defensive prospects and the potential offense Hughes can provide, it's a risk worth taking.

This. His comments about his shift by shift videos are completely different than my opinion of him..

Dobson is the one I will be watching the most because before the draft I would have said he was my preferred D that we would have a shot at drafting. That said, some of what I valued in him was the safety and pragmatism of taking a 6’3 great skating who exceeded PPG as a 17 y/o. With Hughes (and Boqvist) I felt they were like choosing to eat candy for dinner, like they were the most fun, flashy picks but that ultimately you win with D like Dobson.

Deep down I think I wanted Hughes or Boqvist (riskier) more than Dobson but couldn’t justify it at the time. Now that he’s ours I have no regrets at all.

I feel pretty much the same way.I was leaning towards Dobson over Hughes and ideally would have taken a Dobson in the first then an offensive PMD with our second but also expected Hughes to be gone by 7 so I never gave much thought to the possibility of us actually drafting him.I’m pretty stoked that we did and if he does pan out,he could be one of the most exciting players in franchise history.
I’ve got a full pack of tickets for the WJC games in Victoria which has the USA,Sweden,Finland, and Slovakia so I should see lots of QH and his bro this winter.

When it was the Canucks turn to pick, I told my wife I wanted Hughes or Dobson. I would be very upset if we took Bouchard.

So I was a happy camper, and had been doing arm chair scouting on both Hughes and Dobson for a few months as most of us nerds probably did

Dobson is already looking like a Pieterangelo clone. He’s going to be very very good.

But I’m not sorry whatsoever. Hughes is looking like Gaudreau/Marner on defense. Keith is another similar player, however Duncan is elite defensively. If Hughes can work on his defensive craft, he really has a sky high limit.
