How often is the tournament held?

I'm pretty sure that the World cup was the Canada cup renamed. It was renamed because it was deemed unfair for Canada to have the cup named after itself when other teams were gunning for it.

I'm not sure why it took so long for a second one to come around.

It has never been held at regular intervals.

It's been so long since the last one because NHL players participated in the 98 and 02 olympics.

National Hockey League....in every aspect...scheduling, rules, etc.
