What happens if a player decides to take the year off and not play hockey anywhere or if a player hasn't signed with a NHL team? ie Stevens....Is he removed from the team or allowed to play anyhow like Deadmarsh and Allison?

Also, when is the deadline date for players to be removed from rosters if they decide to play in Europe or retire?

From my understanding,

What happens if a player decides to take the year off and not play hockey anywhere or if a player hasn't signed with a NHL team? ie Stevens....Is he removed from the team or allowed to play anyhow like Deadmarsh and Allison?

They are not removed until their contracts have expired. This is because they haven't retired or gone to Europe. Plus their ratings SHOULD drop with each passing year.

Otherwise, Not unless Matt tells me to get rid of these players before contracts are up, I won't do it.

Also, when is the deadline date for players to be removed from rosters if they decide to play in Europe or retire?

There is. I forget when. I am pretty sure someone knows the answer.

I don't know the deadline, but I do think the european rule may have to be re-evaluated. For example, if the deadline was today, Pavel Datsyuk would have to be designated in Europe. There were suggestions Kovalchuk would do the same. I know it's similar to what we dealt with last year, when we thought we'd have a season, but it shouldn't be as big a deal now. Just a matter of getting things straight.

This is just a random suggestion, but has the idea of scrapping the European player rule ever been explored. It could basically be treated as a year off, with the overall ratings falling each year a player's in Europe. I've just always found it weird to take a player away from a team if they're in Europe, whereas AHL players can have a rating. Just something to ponder I guess.

Sean -- I believe the rule applies only to players that do not have an escape clause in their contract. Players that are ineligible to play in the NHL in a given season will be ineligible in the HFNHL as well.

The cut off is October 1st. Stevens is now officially retired (with Damphousse about to follow, it seems), so he will be removed from the HFNHL based on current rules.

However, it's been suggested w review two related rules: one, the forced removal of players who retire could be deferred by on eyear to reflect that those players don't make an appearance in the HFNHL until a year after they appear in the NHL, effectively shortening their careers by one year. Also, the European rule could be reexamined.

We'll discuss options with the admin team and see whether a fair and reasonable alternative can be reached that doesn't overload us with work, but gives teams fair access to their players.

(EDIT: I should add that even if changes are made, depending on the change we may not be able to implement it for the 05/06 season, since teams have already made moves and changes based on the status quo... we'll see what makes the most sense.)

Surprisingly, despite the year off, this years crop of retirees and european bound players isn't that much more than would be expected in a regular season and, as usual, most of the guys headed to Europe are fringe players anyway.. The one's that I'm aware of are as follows (add anything I've missed):

Retired:
Scott Stevens
Roman Turek
Marc Bergevin
Al MacInnis (probable - despite saying he is, he has not signed his retirement papers)
Vincent Damphousse

Europe:
Stanislav Chistov
Alexei Smirnov
Yannick Tremblay
Igor Korolev
Deron Quint
Jamie Wright
Karl Dykhuis
Jiri Bicek
Kenny Jonsson
Jan Hlavac
Radovan Somik
Marcus Ragnarson
Mathias Timander
Neil Little
Jeff Finley
Trevor Kidd
Harold Druken
Pierre Hedin
Pavel Datsyuk (probable - latest report out of Detroit is that there is no 'out' clause)

Career ending injury candidates:
Pasi Nurminen
Adam Deadmarsh (despite his claim of relative health it's rumoured he has been checked out by a couple of teams that were considering signing him and well, let's just say he's still unsigned. Not good.)
Dan Blackburn (A report today says that even after over a year of recovery he was at practise wearing two blockers on the injured arm)

The HF Free Agent/Trade Rumours board has an excellent stickied post that has up to date tracking of the players leaving for Europe.

Definitely the source we should use if we do decide to take these players off the rosters.

I personally have like 6 guys off my roster gone to Europe, but as you said they are all pretty much fringe NHL'ers anyway.

That's an excellent list with a bunch of one's a haven't seen anywhere else. It is obviously missing the most recent retirees and Dryden is right Lilja has signed w/ Detroit. In all it is a better list though b/c it includes guys still showing on HFNHL teams that should have been removed in the past.

There is an updated version of the list, as I keep updating it pretty much daily based on reports from several sources and send an update to Dion every now and then.

Podein playing in Japan this season... interesting.. Sorry to report this gaffs..

Oh well... I think my team will survive without him. ;)

As for Morozov, I don't think he has signed in Europe for the coming season (at least not yet), but I could be wrong.... He signed a contract with a Russian team in Sept of 2004 to play there during the lockout season, but from what I've read, he intends to play in the NHL this coming season. He and the Pens are having a tough time negotiating a deal, but he may end up being dealt to another team.

Mariusz Czerkawski it seems has just signed with the Leafs...as a homer that should raise his ratings right there.
