Can you get another team to retain on one of your players? Here is an example:

:coyotesMilan Lucic
:edmontonFuture Considerations
______________________________
Immediately after...
______________________________
:coyotes2nd round pick 2018, Stuart Skinner
:edmonton Milan Lucic @ 50% retained

So, essentially, the Oilers give up a 2nd and a prospect for another team to pay half of Lucic's salary. Is this allowed?

Didnt Vegas do this with Brassard?

Basically yes, but there would need to be a third team involved and the player traded couldn’t end up back on the same team.

Ottawa -> Vegas at full pop
Vegas -> Pittsburgh with retention.

So OP - yes, we could bribe a team into retaining on Lucic for us, but he’d have to waive his NMC and he couldn’t end up back on our team. I think.

Firstly, no one is retaining 50% on Milan Lucic for a 2nd round pick. Oilers would have to sweeten the pot.

Secondly, I believe it's not directly allowed but can be achieved indirectly (a third team is involved).

Salary retention has a clause that says a team cannot reacquire any player that has had salary retained on his deal until 1 year after the player leaving the club originally.

The exception is if the player becomes a free agent before being re acquired.

So, long story short. If Edmonton trades Lucic, and the team acquiring him (or any other team for that matter) retains salary, Lucic cannot be acquired by the Oliers until 1 year from the date of the original trade taking Lucic out of Edmonton.

A) Arizona--or any team--paying $13m for a 2nd round pick and Stuart Skinner is lunacy.

B) No it's not allowed. Teams cannot acquire a player in a retained salary transaction who was on the roster in the past year.

Mostly correct.

- Teams cannot reacquire a player they traded away in a Salary Retention deal for one year. Unless that player becomes a UFA before the year expires.
- Teams cannot acquire a player in a Salary Retention deal if the player was on that team's roster within the past year, regardless of whether the player became a UFA during that period.
