derrick pouliot : parent teacher meeting, held back a year

Pouliot rides the short bus to practice he is a HORRIBLE defence...at least i think it is defence he is trying to play. Really wish TG would stop putting him out same time as Alien it ruins his mojo.

Also...JV "shotgun" gets homecoming honours and will ride as parade marshal...six packs will be handed out en route.

15W - 6L

Auston Matthews (A+): Improved in all areas save for his interview skills and physical play.
Zach Hyman (B+): Best forchecker in the league and top penalty-killer, has a non-stop motor and never quit attitude. A gem of a roll player who suffers from a lack of offensive talent.
Kasperi Kapanen (B) Two-way wing with speed to burn finally gets decent shot in top 6, does a bit of everything and is a constant threat on the PK for breakaways.
John Tavares (A+): Has been everything we could hope for, involved all over the ice, brings leadership and is developing chemistry with Marner.
Mitch Marner (A+): Does everything, and really well. Well not really, but he's an awesome two-way playmaking wing.
Patrick Marleau (B-): Age is catching up, can still skate though.
Par Lindholm (B): Bottom 6 C/W with limited offense, not great or terrible at anything, responsible two-way depth.
Nazem Kadri (B-): When he's not playing with an edge he is not playing at his best, and he hasnt played with an edge in any game.
Josh Leivo (C-): Good on the cycle, disappointing offense
Tyler Ennis (C+): A good depth player, speedy and not afraid to go into the corners, pulls off high end plays every so often.
Frederick Gauthier (C): Wins faceoffs, can PK, good defensively, doesnt utilize his size nearly enough and cant score to save his life.
Connor Brown (C): Poor man's Hyman, pure effort but hasnt been doing much offensively, has capacity for much more in a bigger roll.

Morgan Rielly (A+): Figured it out, knows where to pick his spots to jump up in the play and when to hang back, much improved defensively, using his shot more.
Ron Hainsey (C+): Overplayed, still useful but his minutes need to be drastically cut back.
Jake Gardiner (B): One of his better seasons thus far in his own end imo, but still not good. Hasnt been as potent in the Ozone so far.
Nikita Zaitsev (C): His rookie season was a mirage.
Travis Dermott (B): Can skate and move the puck well, better defensively than offensively.
Igor Ozhiganov (C-): Was billed as gritty, but isnt. Can make a pass but that's about it.

Frederick Andersen (A+): Has played Vezina calibre goaltending, consistent in a way he hasnt been in previous years.
Garrett Sparks (D+): He probably shouldnt be in the NHL. 3-1 record thanks to team play.

Alright everybody I wanna hear about how your players have been doing this season. Grade them/rank them/describe them; I don't care how you do it.

For :flames:

David Rittich - B+ he's been great, and hopefully he'll get the reigns for now. I'm a little bit worried about him as the starter, because last season when Smith went down with injury is when Rittich started to falter (after a great start to the season).

Okay your turn :D

Gotta pick on you for this one... How are you giving Rittich a "B+" for his work THIS SEASON? I can see if you were giving grades for their time on the team in general, but this season, he's 7-1 (second in the league for win%), second in the league for GAA (1.93), and fourth for save% (0.931).

SHARKS

Forwards
Hertl - B - Strong start to the season but has missed a few games through niggling injuries. Team plays better with him.
Couture - B - Hot start but has begun to cool. Has generally stood up when needed.
Meier - B+ - Break out season so far, I expect a bit of a drop back but he is a strong player.
Kane - C+ - Decent enough start with 7G 8A for 15 points. Can float out of games, but is generally a productive player with good impact.
Pavelski - B - Very slow start, but has gone on a good run lately. Goal machine this season, but hasn't produced a lot in terms of playmaking.
Donskoi - C - 5G 6A for 11 points is a decent season for him, especially given the mix between 2nd and 3rd line. Needs to be more productive to be considered a good top six forward.
Sorenson - B - Has had a strong start for a player that played a half the season on the fourth line. Is disruptive on the forecheck, and can maintain possession of the puck well. Forming a good combination with Thornton on the third line.
Thornton - C- - Was always going to be a slow start coming back from injury, and the infection didn't help. 3G 3A for 6 points in 13 games is not productive enough for a player of his calibre now sitting on the third line centre spot.
Labanc - C - Hot and cold player. Has some great vision and skill, but easily loses puck battles near the boards. Needs to use his shot more, and get it off quicker.
M.Karlsson - F - Should not be in the team. 1 assist in 22 games whilst sitting at a -6. I'm usually not a fan of plus-minus, but when you have no production either - it's an issue. Provides nothing to the team except for being a
'penalty killer', despite the PK giving up more high danger scoring chances when he is on the ice. Somehow gets regularly bumped up to a higher line during games.
Suomela - C+ - New to the North American game, he was generating a lot of scoring chances when paired with Donskoi and Kane. Unfortunately, PDB thought scratching him and then playing him with Melker Karlsson and Goodrow would be beneficial.
Goodrow - C- - Offering what is expected. Nothing more, nothing less. He is a replaceable 4th liner who is good on the PK.
Chartier - C- - See Goodrow. Young player on the fourth line. Doesn't impact games.
Gambrell - NA - Only given two games, and hasn't really stood out for any good or bad reasons.

Overall Forwards: C- Have decent production spread amongst the forwards, but players need to step up.

Defence
Ryan - C+ - Hasn't been given the ice time, and is commonly benched without real reason. Has had a couple of bad reads, but is generally solid and stable on the pairing with Burns. Needs to use his slapshot more though.
Burns - B+ - Wanders off defensively, but 23 points in 22 games is definitely nothing to complain about.
Dillon - C+ - Bottom pairing Dman who has taken a lot of strides in recent seasons. Rarely getting out of position, and pretty confident player is moving the puck up ice.
E.Karlsson - C+ - Slow start, but is generating a lot of chances. His advanced stats are good and point to a much better performance the rest of the season.
Vlasic - D - Currently a -6 for a Defensive Dman. This can be contributed to a poor and underperforming pairing with Braun, and the pairing with Karlsson early on being patchy. His play has fallen substantially, and he is overplayed - especially when he is put on the second PP unit.
Braun - F - He has looked awful. It's only got worse since pairing with Vlasic and used to 'shut down' opposition top lines. Has sparks of decent play, but offers nothing other than a bottom pairing D skill set. Was given 25 minutes against the Oilers, second only to E. Karlsson.
Heed - NA - One game. Can't assess fairly but did ok.

Overall Defence: D Biggest issue facing the Sharks. Just not good enough.

Jones - D- - Being left out to dry, but is letting in bad goals, and not making saves the team needs.
Dell - B - Limited starts, but generally good. Left out to dry in loss against Blues.

Peter DeBoer - F - Breaks up performing lines, scratches performing players, persists with underperforming players and gives them more minutes and higher responsibilities, can't run a PP with strong units at his disposal. The team underperforming is simply because of him.

Overall team: D+ The team is performing well below expectations, and are only top of the Pacific due to the shambles that division is. They have currently lost half of their games with losses coming to the Ducks, Rangers x2, Islanders, Devils, Oilers, St Louis, and Dallas. No disrespect to those teams, but the Sharks should not be losing to them.

That's fair, he probably does deserve a better grade than that. I doubt he'll keep this high level of play up, but he's been fantastic so far.

Nathan MacKinnon - A He is capable of more but can you really complain when he is 3rd in league scoring?
Mikko Rantanen - A+ The best player on this team and possibly league so far
Gabriel Landeskog - A A great compliment to Mikko and Nate. Scoring really well this year too
Alexander Kerfoot - C Putting up points but needs to drive the play more and do more overall
Tyson Jost - C- Was really bad to start the season but has looked a lot better since coming back from injury
Colin Wilson C+ He is scoring goals but is the definition of average in everything including hustle
Carl Soderberg - A- The only guy apart from the 1st line that is effective on every night. Guy is able to do everything in all zones.
Matt Nieto - D Looked terrible to start the season but slowly improved. Hasn't really improved much though and not sure he deserves to play every night.
Matt Calvert - D+ He skates fast, I guess. Literally has zero skill.
Gabriel Bourque - D A poor man's Matt Calvert.
Sven Andrighetto - C+ Not the best at producing but can create decently.
Vladislav Kamenev - C+ Really improving every night and showing his defensive talent.
Sheldon Dries - C A lot better than most people thought he would be and can provide a little bit of offesne. Not sure if he is an every day NHL forward yet.
Marko Dano - F Literally brings nothing to the table, even less than Gabriel Bourque.
JT Compher - B Really solid start to the season but has been injured for the most part

Erik Johnson - C- Needs to be much better, seems to lost his ability to handle the puck
Tyson Barrie - B+ Really slow start to the season but back to his regular self
Samuel Girard - A- A little inconsistent but expected for a 2nd year defenseman. Pretty much can do everything.
Nikita Zadorov - C Very inconsistent
Ian Cole - B -Everything the Aves expected when they signed him
Mark Barberio - C He is what he is, a solid #6-7 defenseman
Patrick Nemeth - D+ He needs to be better

Semyon Varlamov - A Been great, just hope he can stay healthy
Philipp Grubauer - C+ Played decently, just want a little more from our future starter

Honestly don't think MacK deserves an A so far this year. The #s are that dominant, but he's not that dominant on the ice. I'd give him a B+

David Quinn A- | Playing McLeod every game brings it down from A+

Lias Andersson C | Great in the AHL and not really been given a chance to succeed in the NHL, but he was not good enough in his 2 games on the second line

Pavel Buchnevich B- | Better after the scratch and then got injured, but it hasn't been the season I expected from Pasha so far

Filip Chytil A+ | He's been absolutely amazing whenever given the chance in the top 6

Jesper Fast B+ | Contributes well to every line he is on, poor shooting luck so far

Kevin Hayes A+ | Chytil-Hayes have been absolutely dominant as a duo, on pace for 50+ points and his underlying metrics suggests that should increase rather than decrease

Brett Howden B+ | The points have been good and there have been bouts of great play, but some games his line is completely overwhelmed

Chris Kreider A+ | Great as always, his shooting percentage is running way hot but drives play like always - should finish the year with around 35 goals

Cody McLeod F | Not sure he is even AHL-caliber at this point

Vladislav Namestnikov B | Better after the scratch and has done well as a fill-in on different lines, though hasn't been driving play like he has done previously in his career

Jimmy Vesey B+ | More goals, more scoring chances, less of a possession drag, but I still don't want him in our top-9 when we have a healthy roster

Mika Zibanejad A- | Great on the PP, but a bit of a disappointment 5v5 - he's never scored much there in his NYR career, but he usually drives possession a lot better than he has this season

Mats Zuccarello B- | Has scored a decent amount of points and looked great on a line with Hayes and Chytil, but hasn't delivered what we are used to so far

Anthony DeAngelo A+ | Has been one of our best defencemen and been mostly great 5v5 and fantastic on the PP. Has been a top-3 PPQB in the league in terms of xGF/60 despite playing on our 2nd unit - which has been very poor when he hasn't been on it

Adam McQuaid C | Had very difficult usage and struggled. Shouldn't be in the lineup unless there are two or more injuries on D

Neal Pionk B- | The good news is that he is putting up points on the powerplay at more than double the rate that Crosby has ever managed in his career. The bad news is that everything points toward this being a total fluke and could result in a disastrous contract extension. Is being asked to do a very difficult job 5v5 and on the PK with awful results

Kevin Shattenkirk A | Is getting quite cushy minutes 5v5 and absolutely thriving, relegated to the PP2 where he and DeAngelo are doing a terrific job but it has limited his ability to put up points (as well as the poor shooting luck compared to xSh%). The lack of points is the only thing that takes away a "+"

Brady Skjei B- | Struggled with McQuaid and has looked worse than his new partner DeAngelo in every facet of the game. Has played successively worse throughout the season and eventually got scratched for a couple of games. Looked decent in his return, we'll see if he can pick it up

Brendan Smith C+ | When he is good, he is very good. When he is bad, there is no comparison. One of the most frustrating players I've ever watched. He is mostly good TBH, be he just can't be trusted

Marc Staal B+ | Is being asked to do too much with Pionk but has been putting up astonishingly great metrics away from Neal. Not sure if its purely circumstantial, but he has more than 100 minutes away from him so the sample size is decent. Having his best season in years

Fredrik Claesson A+ | Has been amazing in the cushy role with Shattenkirk. For a guy most expected to be a #7 there can be no other grade than A+, give him a multi-year extension if he can keep this up!

Alexandar Georgiev B+ | The team hasn't given him an easy job and he has been outperforming his xSv%, no complaints here

Henrik Lundqvist B+ | The team has never limited the shot quality he has faced to this extent in his entire career. His Sv% is great at face value, but he is pretty much doing what an average goalie would do in his situation. But in the end you still have to make those saves, putting up a .92 when you're expected to put up a .92 is more impressive than putting up a .90 when you're expected to put up a .90

For Tampa Bay:

Center

Brayden Point (A+): Hard to imagine him being better. He's had one bad game that I can think of, and, even in that one, he had a good third period.

Steven Stamkos (B): A lot of people are going to jump on this, but I'm combining everything that happened up to the first game with Nashville (F), and everything that's happened afterward (A+). Stamkos single-handedly cost us that game with two terrible plays that led to Nashville goals, but, credit to him, he recognized something had to change. He stated he needed to get back into a shoot-first mentality, and then, lo and behold, actually did it. Since then he's been serving up a lot of crow to his doubters, those of us (and I was a huge doubter) who didn't believe he could find his game. Even when he's not scoring, he's creating chances. It's been a few weeks now. Enough to give us hope.

Anthony Cirelli (B): He's settled down a little bit from the usual energy we see with rookies, but still looks like a solid 3C at the NHL level.

Cedric Paquette (A): By Paquette's standards, we really couldn't ask for much more. The thing about Paquette is there's a huge difference between his A-game and B-game, and we've gotten his A-game in all but a couple of games so far.

Left Wing

Ondrej Palat (F): For those of you who don't know, Palat is among the slowest starters every year. He commonly puts up about 0.3 ppg in the first half and then roughly 1.0 ppg in the second half. Before his injury, he had 5 points, all assists, in 9 gamesm, and his overall play was uninspired to say the least. It's getting frustrating to watch because he's capable of being one of our best players.

JT Miller (B+): He just keeps producing. We put him on the 4th line, he produced. Moved him back up, he produced.

Yanni Gourde (A+): Getting great players from nowhere seems to be Tampa Bay's M.O., and, since Gourde is considered a Brisebois find, as opposed to an Yzerman find, I'm confident the trend will continue. Scores all his goals around the crease. We need more guys doing this. (Plays Right Wing a lot too.)

Alex Killorn (A): He's probably the steadiest 0.5 ppg producer in the league. In good years or bad, you can count on him being right around, or exactly on, that mark. This year has been a good one. He's created a lot more chances than we're used to. His skating seems improved too, after several years where it appeared to be declining.

Adam Erne (B-): Much improved lately. Looked a little lost early on and was a healthy scratch for a while. Seems to have his feet under him now. He's a different player when he has confidence. Is probably playing his way off our bottom line.

Right Wing

Nikita Kucherov (C-): There are a lot of TB fans who'd argue for a lower grade, even though I'm sure this surprises a lot of fans. He has definitely not been good by his own standards, which is something he's talking about a lot himself. He's frustrated with his level of play. That said, he sneezes out points as well as anybody in the league. He can have a downright awful game, full of turn overs, dead plays, and ill-advised decisions, and then show up for a split second to create a goal more/less on his own. So I can't bring the grade down too far. He's leaving a lot to be desired, but has shown some flashes of his "old self" lately.

Tyler Johnson (B): He's been one of the bigger positives on the team this year, because I don't think anybody expected him to be as good as he has been. That said, the production has dried up a bit. I think he's taken on a more responsible role with his current linemates and often seems to be the guy covering for a pinching D. (Plays Left Wing a lot too.)

Mathieu Joseph (B+): He surprised some people by making the team out of camp, but has been a huge net positive. Even when he's not scoring, he brings a lot to the table with his speed and tenacity. But lately, pucks are starting to go in for him. Looks like he's going to be part of our future.

Ryan Callahan (B): Expectations are in the basement. I don't know if anybody expects him to beat a goalie ever again. So I'm not weighing this against his contract, but against what he realistically could bring to the team. And all we could really expect was good defense. He's brought that, and has had the occasional offensive bright spot too.

Defense

Victor Hedman (C+): He's been a little hard to gauge. His best games have mostly been quiet games, rather than the offensive outbursts he had last year. But he's had some bad games too. I think it's hard to give him a higher grade when he's our most talented defenseman but has been playing like our second best defenseman. But Hedman goes through stretches like this every year. You never know when he's going to start dominating.

Ryan McDonagh (Is there a Grade higher than A+?): Our fanbase is pretty much stunned. We knew he underachieved last year, like a lot of D who get traded at the TDL, but I don't think anybody expected him to show up like a legit #1D this year, and one of the better ones in the league at that. He's been an absolute monster. If he'd come in last year and played like this, we would have been shocked, but, having come in last year and underwhelmed, and then a few months later come in and be arguably (but probably) our best player through 21 games? Can't say enough good things.

Anton Stralman (A-): He looked a little rejuvenated up until his injury. Mainly that comes from playing with McDonagh. But together those two can throw a tarp over just about anybody.

Mikhail Sergachev (C): It's been a mixed bag. I think he's going through a sophomore slump. There are nights where he's downright horrendous and nights where you don't notice him much, in a good way, which I guess is a thing most defensemen of his ilk go through. He's the one guy on our team who I wish would shoot less because it's so predictable, and rarely a real threat to score or create a rebound.

Brayden Coburn (A): The most rejuvenated member of the Lightning. His skating is back to what it was when he first came to the team, if not before that even. I question whether or not we had a few guys spending too much time in the weight room (Johnson has said this caused him to lose speed), and, if that's true, it could be why Coburn has refound his extra Big Man gear. He's been very effective, while most of us thought those days were over. So he's destroyed expectations.

Dan Girardi (B-): He's pretty much in line with his expectations. We know he's our worst defenseman, and we know we're playing him over his head more often than not, next to Hedman, so mistakes happen. That said, he still seems to be a net positive, which is all we're really asking from him.

Slater Koekkoek (B): Honestly, I'd given up hope on Koekkoek, and the only reason why his grade is so high here is because he's shown enough flashes this year for me to think we can still salvage something out of him. That said, he seems to have instilled very little faith in the coaching staff, and is still our most regular healthy scratch.

Erik Cernak (A-): We called him up from Syracuse shortly after Stralman went down and he immediately replaced Koekkoek as a regular. This is a guy we need to be a regular next year, and hopefully play in the top-4, and, so far, he's showing signs that that's a real possibility. He plays with a bit of an edge, which can get him into trouble, but, IMO, it's an edge we need as a team. The fact that he looks like a solid NHLer, right out of the gate, warrants the high grade, I think.

Goalies

Andrei Vasilevskiy (A): When he's "on," I'm not sure there's a better goalie in the league. Sometimes he relies way too much on athleticism and reflexes, but, when he combines that with a calm, controlled game, where he's aware of situations, smothering pucks when need be, and keeping his rebounds in check? He's lights out. Still struggles a bit with regular "young goalie" issues, but seems to have made a huge step forward this year. This is the best I've seen him control rebounds consistently. Hopefully the injury doesn't set him back.

Louis Domingue (B-): Sometimes he's so lights out he makes us believe he's a real asset, one we can trade somewhere down the line as a #1 to some other team. Other nights he reminds us why he's a back-up, and a pretty average back-up at that. That said, I think being an average back-up is kind of in line with the expectations on him, and a drastic improvement over what we've gotten used to with this team (Lindback, Nabakov, Budaj).

Too lazy to put everyone in order. These ratings are relative of expectations

Kreider: A+. He’s broken out for sure, he’s been unstoppable this year and is our unofficial captain, great in the locker room as well. Our best player. 12 goals, 20 points in 23 games. Also best/2nd best net front guy in the league

Zibby: A+ He’s a borderline 1C at this point, improved his defense a ton since being here, our only shoot first player aside from Kreider. Lethal on the power play. 19 points in 23 games (note that Kreider and Zib are not playing together this year)

Kevin Hayes: A+. His defensive game is great and his offense continues to get better and better. I keep saying this but I can see him hitting 60 points eventually. 14 points in 23 games

Neal Pionk: A+. Trash on his advanced stats all you want, but the kid can put up points. Rookie dman with 14 points in 21 games. He’s often been used as our 1D or stuck with Staal which is the reason for his advanced stats. Somewhat promising defensively with decent stick work but his defensive IQ is pretty bad.

Howden: A+. He plays like a vet, his defensive play is incredibly advanced for his age. Great pickup in the McDonagh trade. 12 points in 22 games

Vesey: B. He’s rounding into a real solid player. He gets a lot of shit too for being a “disappointment” but his defensive play has improved. He stopped trying to play like Rick Nash this year and kind of matured his game. Passing looks better too, he was probably one of the worst passers in the league last year. Should round into a solid 3rd liner who can PK

Zuccarello: C. He’s been off this year, formerly the heart of the team he hasn’t played with the same intensity he played with in years past. 10 points in 17 games

Buchnevich: B. 9 points in 14 games. AV ruined him and I’m afraid it was for good. After Buch was scratched he came back and started lighting it up but unfortunately got injured. Hopefully he comes back and doesn’t skip a beat. Still looks hesistant/unconfident with the puck though, when he came into the league he was making some highlight reel moves and carrying the puck, haven’t seen that in a long time. He needs to shoot more as well. Defensive game/intensity is off

Namestnikov: C. Was complete trash for us last year and the first few games of the year but after getting scratched, he came back onto Mika’s wing and has been really good, doing the dirty work to set his linemates up. A bit snakebit though. 9 points in 22 games

Chytil: A-. His stat line doesn’t look pretty but that’s because he played all but 6 games on the 4th line, usually with McLeod/Lettieri/Spooner who had a combined 2 points at the time. 2 of those were Spooners..since being moved up he’s had 5 goals in 6 games. Creating chances constantly and I’m glad he stopped trying to deke through teams all by himself and simplified his game. Fits better on the wing. Needs to improve his defensive game and get stronger on his skates, he gets pushed off the puck pretty easily. Shot needs work as well but he has great tools.

Deangelo: A-. Defensive game has improved and his offense is still good. Intensity is definitely there and he’s always yelling at someone or trying to fight someone. Has played like a top 4 dman this year. Needs more PP time. 8 points in 15 games

Shatty: D. Still kinda feel like he’s recovering from his injury but 8 points in 22 games is not pretty. Hasn’t been good at all this year

Skjei: B+. He’s played like shit recently. But he was very good before Quinn said he needed to stop trying to do too much. I think he’ll bounce back

Hank: A+++

Others aren’t really notable

Your kidding right? Second in league scoring and the driver of the best line in the league "not that dominant"...... your embarrassing us man.

He’s not as sharp as last year. Maybe it’s cause Mikko is driving that line his year, but I think MacK just hasn’t hit his best form yet this season.

Hence the lack of a +. Seriously, if the 2nd leading scorer is only a B+ then I don't know what to tell everyone else about their own guys.

Not everyone has a MacKinnon to grade.

It’s sorta like how Mikko spent the first half of last season producing over PPG without playing well. When you’ve got that much talent and that situation we grade their play differently than if these were the 2017 avs they were trying to produce for

Jeff Skinner A+:
Tied for league lead in goals. Just coming up clutch to lead this team to victory after victory...what else needs to be said.
Jack Eichel A: The shots aren't going in as much as we would like, but as long as he keeps setting up Skinner and being near the top of the league in assists I can live with it. Also his defensive play has taken HUGE strides.
Jason Pominville A-: Away from the top line, he isn't very effective. But hey, everyone needs a good complimentary scorer and he has fit the bill perfectly this year.
Zemgus Girgensons B+: Looked like only a matter of time until he lost his place on this team going into the season. Has turned it around and been the PERFECT 4th liner. Good speed, good forecheck, good defensively, and chipping in a bit of offense.
Johan Larsson B+: See Zemgus Girgensons (minus the speed). Those two have been so vital to our turnaround playing together and looking like completely different players than previous years.
Casey Mittelstadt B: The points are slowly starting to come and only a matter of time until he explodes. His 200ft game has been terrific already and he is such a puck hound. The game by game improvement after not looking NHL ready to start is downright impressive.
Sam Reinhart B: Quietly on pace for like 60 points. Another relatively slow start for him but has looked better as of late and using his vision to set up some great plays.
Kyle Okposo B: Has had a solid bounce back season after some horrible injuries/illnesses. Won't ever be back to form completely but he has generated offense and overall just been a really solid middle-6 forward which hopefully will continue and not make the contract too back-breaking.
Evan Rodrigues B: A healthy scratch 5 times...who knows why. He puts his best effort every night. Not much of a finisher but great speed, versatility and playmaking ability makes him a solid middle-6 option.
Conor Sheary B-: His speed is a great asset to our forecheck in team in general and he is chipping in some nice secondary scoring that we aren't used to. Has been a bit streaky and can improve his all around game but a great cheap pickup so can't really complain.
Patrik Berglund B-: Starting the season at 2C made it look like we are in for a rough season. When he was put on the 4th line with Larsson and Girgs they became one of the best shot suppressing lines out there. Not worth his contract and won't provide offense but his defensive game has been a welcome addition.
Vladimir Sobotka C: He is a strong puck protector but not much else. Has been consistently in our top-9 with not much to show for it and ideally should be a 13th forward.
Tage Thompson C-: If I wrote this a week ago this grade would be a F. Horrible start costing the team many goals and giving nothing in return. The past 3 games he has turned it around scoring 2 goals and making much less mistakes. Would be huge if he continues or he should be sent to the AHL.

Rasmus Dahlin A-: I expected him to come in and struggle defensively. He has made some mistakes but overall he has been one of our best shutdown guys. On top of that, he is now starting to flash his potential offensively with 7 points in his last 7 games. What a treat to watch.
Jake McCabe A-: Last season it looked like he was working his way out of the league. This season it looks like he is a true top-4 D. Solid defensive game while on pace for almost 40 points. Has been a huge reason why this team has been able to rebound.
Zach Bogosian B: For once, he appears healthy and looks good. Has made his fair share of gaffs but overall his defensive game has been pretty solid and like most of the D, he is chipping in some offense to boot.
Rasmus Ristolainen B: He is going through some early season highs and lows. Before the win streak he was looking more awful defensively than he ever has. Has really turned it around lately though and while he may not be a top pair minute muncher ideally, he is still a big part of this team.
Nathan Beaulieu B-: If you think why the Sabres were so bad last year, he may be reason #1. Putrid defensively and a turnover machine. He isn't a stud or anything now but has looked much better all around this season and is a fine bottom-pair/#7 guy for the year.
Casey Nelson B-: Not much to say about him, he is your classic depth NHLer. Doesn't provide much but has been fine in his #6/7 role this season and not hurting the team.
Marco Scandella C-: Speaking of not hurting the team, well Scandella has been the opposite so far. His play dropped off a cliff apparently over the offseason and while he has sorta been better lately, it still is not near to the top-4 defensive defenseman level the Sabres were hoping for.

Carter Hutton A-: I was looking at him to be our target since late last year and I am so thankful he was Botterill's too. He has let in a few he would want back but for the most part he has been Mr. Consistency giving us a chance to win every night and making so many key saves.
Linus Ullmark B+: The only reason he hasn't played more has been because Hutton has been so great. Most games, when given the chance, Ullmark has been extremely solid and hopefully when Hutton falters he will continue to be ready to pick up the slack.

Phil Housley A-: With the turnaround some have him as a Adams contender at this time. While he is not without his warts, he looks like a much better coach than last season and adjusting much better to in game situations as needed.
Jason Botterill A-: The ROR trade was bad but sometimes when you need to make a change you won't get the best price (still want a redo here though). The super cheap acquisitions of Sheary and of course Skinner have been vital though. As has signing Hutton

Exactly this, Mack has been fantastic, don't get it wrong, but compared to what he has shown at points this season and last season, he overall hasn't been playing up to his standard. It's weird to not give him an A+, but for him he isn't there yet.

15W - 6L

Kasperi Kapanen (B) Two-way wing with speed to burn finally gets decent shot in top 6, does a bit of everything and is a constant threat on the PK for breakaways.
Nazem Kadri (B-): When he's not playing with an edge he is not playing at his best, and he hasnt played with an edge in any game.
Josh Leivo (C-): Good on the cycle, disappointing offense

Ron Hainsey (C+): Overplayed, still useful but his minutes need to be drastically cut back.
Nikita Zaitsev (C): His rookie season was a mirage.
Travis Dermott (B): Can skate and move the puck well, better defensively than offensively.
Igor Ozhiganov (C-): Was billed as gritty, but isnt. Can make a pass but that's about it.

Garrett Sparks (D+): He probably shouldnt be in the NHL. 3-1 record thanks to team play.

For half your list, it's pretty good. The other half is ludicrous. Kapanen deserves a solid A. He's been fantastic with and without Matthews and this is his breakout season. He's a terror on all 200 feet of the ice.

Kadri deserves less than a B-. He's been playing ugly for awhile now, and while it won't last, he should be more consistent. He's getting a C- from me.

Leivo has been fantastic for the role he's playing on the fourth line and on the power play. He deserves at least a B.

Hainsey gets a failing grade from me. He shouldn't be on the top pairing. An easy F for me.

Dermott has been the Leafs best defensive defenseman. But a mile. How can you give him anything less than an A+? His possession numbers are unreal, and the team is so much better when he's on the ice.

Ozhiganov probably deserves at most a B. He's not been bad. His possession numbers have been decent alongside Dermott and he's slowly growing into his role on the third pairing. His decision making has been very good, and he's starting ot fit into the system.

Sparks... D+?! Are you insane?
