Pumping the tires on Motte

Motte's insertion into the lineup seemed to completely energize that previously moribund fourth line. They were dominant in the exhibition schedule, and dominated again last night.

What do the Canucks have in Motte?....Green showing some love in the post-game presser saying that Motte is still a young player, with more upside to his game.

I know Motte gets kinda short shrift on these boards, but can he build on his reputation for a relentless work ethic and top-end skating skills, and actually become a guy who can score more than last year's nine goals?

I’ll pump some. Love the energy the guy brings, transforms our fourth line. I would even argue that he brings more to the team than Virtanen does. Apologies to Jake’s fans.

A PK specialist who occasionally has good energy games when rested but is mostly an untalented drag on the bottom-6. Lots of effort doing superficial stuff that looks good to some eye tests, not a lot of actual substance.

I can take him or leave him. He is an ok guy for the 12th forward on a team like ours, but could/should be upgraded on. I am more worried about getting Eriksson off our roster more than him at the moment.

Canucks bottom 6 were outscored 2-1 last year and Green comes back with the same 4th line Schaller Beagle Motte and giving them more offensive zone starts. Motte is not even an nhl player, he should be in Utica.

I still hold out some hope Jake will be able to put it together someday. I still think he has that upside (however slim that may be at this point). Motte, is what he is at this point.

Likewise, I hope Jake gets it together, he’s had enough opportunities. Time to fish or cut bait now.

The guy passes the eye test for what you want in a 12th forward, penalty killing role. Remains to be seen if he can give you the 10-10 production you hope for out of those minutes, but there is some cause for optimism, as he can use his speed to create chances. Defensively, mostly in good position, never gets outworked and always willing to play physical.

The advanced stats haven't been there to this point, but that could have been more as a victim of circumstances then Motte dragging his line down. Pretty tough not to get cratered defensively when you're on the ice with weak forwards and an awful defense.

Going to be interesting to track how his season goes this year on a better, deeper team, and whether or not he's plateaued in his development.

OK as a 10-12 minute a game penalty killer, tricks people into thinking he's better than he is because of his relentless effort despite lacking in results to show for it. Like other Canucks grinders, gets unnecessary bumps in ice time every time he looks somewhat dangerous for a shift or two.

I absolutely love how the 4th line plays like they're human torpedos in the offensive zone. They are relentless on the forecheck and battle extremely hard on the boards. The primary purpose of a 4th line should be to wear down the opposition, penalty kill, and effectively eat up minutes so the top 6 can rest.

You see 20 goal/40 point seasons from Motte? Thought you hated hyperbole?

Hansen zero 40 pt seasons, one 20g season.

I was thinking more along the lines of what Hansen actually was during his career (10-15g 30ish pt checking winger) rather than pro rating his outlier of a career year.

Some forget there was a wave prior to that career yr to trade him for his lack of hands. He used to blow so many scoring chances it was getting ridiculous.
Time has been kind to the memory of Jannik Hansen.

Hansen was also injured a lot.

He had a season of 16-23-39 and others that projected out at 17-30-47 (lockout year) and 27-23-50. Outside of the Tortorella year, he averaged 40 points/82 GP from 2011-2017.

Tyler Motte has averaged 15 points/82 games for his career.

Sorry meant 22 goals and 39 points, plus 47 point pace in the lockout shortened season. You crack me up, hate hyperbole, then use it yourself.

Jannik Hansen put up 199 points in 458 games from age 24-30 on the Canucks. That's a 36 point average. Unbelievable we're seeing productive members of the greatest era in team history compared to guys like Motte.

Nobody forgets that Hansen didn't have the greatest finish, if he did, he'd have been a 1st liner. I don't hear any rumblings from the dressing room that Motte is a practice beast like we used to with Jannik. Teammates always remarked that he was very skilled in practice but couldn't finish in the games.

Motte has a good motor in short stretches, Hansen had one of the highest running motors in recent memory for a Canucks player IMO.

He's really good when the other team has their goalie pulled though. Unbelievable the guy who hates hyperbole compares a guy like Motte to Hansen.

Like this comment reminds me when people around here were projecting Markus Granlund to become Mikael Backlund, just laughable.

Hansen earned everything he got as a Canuck. His team-friendly contracts may have helped, but at his height he was considered one of the best 3rd line wingers in the game by Canucks fans. He was also great during the Cup run and followed that up with some productive seasons. He was nicknamed "Honey Badger" for a reason.

Time has not been kind to Hansen (he's only 33) but Canucks fans have been fond of Hansen for years.

Comparing Motte to Hansen is insulting. Hansen was a borderline 2nd liner/great 3rd liner, Motte is a decent 11th or 12th forward on a good night.

You noticed Hansen every game and he got lots of chances, although he had a hard time finishing them. He'd throw in some good board work and short passes and the odd really nice cross-ice pass, and once in a while he'd just blow wide for 150 feet around a defender from the Canucks' blue line in and score. Motte does hardly anything.
