We'll see more of Burakovsky before Rantanen returns, so he's going to get every chance to prove himself in the preseason. My issue is, once Rantanen returns, who moves to the 3rd line? Donskoi is playing on Kadri's wing, and he outplayed Burakovsky in a big way tonight. I think Jost earned his shot at a top-6 role in the playoffs last year, so they only option might be to move Burakovsky down. Donskoi looked really good tonight in my opinion.

If Mikko returns, will he suck all year because he missed camp and a bunch of games like Nylander did last season? That should be your worry #1.

Sounds like a good problem to have.

Fews thoughts:

- Good overall game. Score isn't indicative of how the game went. Avs outshot the Stars big time.
- If this is all we're going to get out of Burakovsky, I don't see him in the top-6 very long. He killed almost every play that went his way. Not much good to say about him.
- Makar-Girard was exactly as advertised. Got pinned in their end a few times, but they continue to excel at starting breakouts. Makar was especially good with his breakout passes.
- The 4th line deserves some love, they were awesome.
- Landeskog and MacKinnon were both a bit rusty. To be expected at this point, they'll be fine.
- Thought Rosen looked better as the game went on. He can really skate.
- Byram played decent, but I don't know if decent is enough for him to stick around. I think I'm leaning towards another year in the WHL at this point, but he'd be okay in any case.

I really think you nailed it.

Bura was especially bad. Makar is an NHLer and showed it for sure. I thought the same thing about Landy and Nate being rusty, also that Byram should spend a year down. It should do wonders (just like Rantanen....)

there's no way Mikko sits out as long as Nylander. No way. If he does miss games at max it will be a couple of weeks. Is it ideal? Absolutely not. But will it derail his/the Avs season? No.

I still think he will be on the ice for game 1.

Reading the first page and the last page of this thread was awesome. Sounded like we were Stanley Cup winners and now it's just preseason.

Missed the first half of the game, but...

- I love me some Donskoi, but dang he's probably going to have some Calvert problems where he gets awesome chances and just doesn't have enough goalscoring instincts.

- I actually thought Nuke looked quite good out there with his line and I didn't mind Makar/Girard either. Shots from the point worry me though, as 80% of our D-core is very much below average. I still don't see what people see in Makar's shot, it's very average or below-average if you take away two fluke goals where he was ripping it.

- Not trying to be a gigantic arse here, but considering how much some lot hyped up Byram on this board I thought we were going to get a more NHL ready defender. He's done a lot of good, but based on these two games he isn't close of being what we need him to be at this stage in time.

- Not worried about MacKinnon, but holy smokes this puck hog version of him is a effin' terrible player.

Hard to take the positives though, when you still lose and against a team who played pretty much nobody.

Ok Avs, now it’s time to take that preseason shit seriously. We are missing Mikko, EJ and Cole and have a very tough schedule to start. We have to be ready.

People who've watched him regularly have kinda/sorta warned us about him. He will go on a McPing-like streak for a handful of games where everything is going into the net, and then long stretches where nothing does. I so very much hate using this euphemism because of whom it's associated with, but it is what it is.

You have people playing for jobs in Dallas and our players are just looking to get systems down. I don't take this loss very seriously.
Meaningless preseason game is always meaningless, I just don't see what positives you can take away getting creamed by their AHL duo netminders and still lose. You know if Avs played the same range of talent as Stars did, we would've gotten our arses kicked like 6-0.

True enough, but you can clearly see players like Kadri and Mack not going 100%. I take positives out of what I saw out of Donskoi. Mark Alt isn't gonna be up here so thank god for that lol Barberio hopefully won't see a game with the regular squad. Byram looks too raw atm and that's certainly disappointing.

What did everyone think of Rosen? I can't get a read. I didn’t really pay attention to him tonight. Poor guy was stuck with Barbs who I can’t stand.

He needs at least 20 games before we start calling him Kerfoot but the fact that he blamed his lack of success in the NHL so far on "opportunities" instead of blaming himself tells me that he won't get any better.

We'll see.

I really thought he played the Kerfoot role on that line. My god he killed everything and was out of position or failed to complete simple passes.

The good: Donskoi, Bellemare, Kadri, Nieto, Calvert, Makar, Girard, Nichushkin

The bad: Bura and Rosen still for me

The meh: Mack and Lando played like it was a preseason game (which is ok), Byram (good until the end), Grubauer (looked alright in the limited action he saw)

Overall liked what I saw but the PP was awful and even though it’s just one game it was enough for me to worry about having Burakovsky in our top 6.

I actually liked Rosen for what I judged him to be. Basically a bottom pairing pucker mover who isn't a complete disaster defensively.

There's something in Donskoi's game that reminds me of Soda for some reason, especially in the o-zone.

I get that as well, except with more speed in pretty much every aspect of the way he plays the game. Don will get a lot of chances, but does not have the finish. Even with Mikko back at some point I think we are still looking for that #2 to play with Kadri. Don is a fine #3 on a top six line though.

People who've watched him regularly have kinda/sorta warned us about him. Yeah, still very valuable IMO. I think hes a really good complimentary winger for a top six line. Unfortunately we have four top six players and only one of those guys IMO.

Bura and Nuke both are the epitome of almost on every shift or puck touch they get. They are both going to get roasted all year IMO.

I actually think Don and JT will end up the 3rd wheels in the top six. Hopefully Jost can hold down the 3C role.

I think it is going to have to be one of these two sets on the road.

Landy - MacK - Don
JT - Kadri - Mikko

Don - MacK - Mikko
Landy - Kadri - JT

At home I can see them running

Landy - MacK - Mikko
JT - Kadri - Don

------

Bura is a dead fish, and it is already stinking up the joint.

So Byram is no longer making our team then.

He made some mistakes, but I also think he did enough and showed enough improvement that you can't count him out yet. No way am I on board with counting him out as not ready yet.

People forget all he has to do is be a plus on the bottom pairing this year to make the team. His competition isn't exactly stiff for his skill set IMO. Especially competing against Graves, Rosen, Barbs, and Cotton. Timmins might actually be the problem if he makes it. They won't want two rookies running the bottom pairing.

No PP time for Rosén? If they are planning using him as a defensive stay at home specialist for the bottom pairing it won't get pretty. It's like using a sportscar as a tractor, painful.

Too early to see what he has. Let’s give it a couple games.

Lengthy reaction post:

Good first half of the game, then they kind of took their foot off the gas. Which you know, is fine since it’s pre-season and so many vets were playing. They’re more interested in getting their timing back and getting their legs under them, then scoring goals.

Bellemare - Closest thing we've had to Stephane Yelle in a long time. He’s gonna form an absolutely killer 4th line with Calvert and Nieto. They are gonna just grind teams into the ice. Handled himself pretty well in the scrap too. Showed he’s knows how to get a good grip and some good timing to keep the guy at a distance and still pop him a few times. Not bad for a guy with so few fights.

Kadri - I love that the Avs finally have a skill player again that just goes right to the net on every play and stands inches away from the goalie. Flashed some nice puck skills and was reading plays well with his new linemates. I really think he’s gonna have a career year at some point with the Avs, and it might even come this year.

Bednar - Really smart move by him to show Kadri respect and give him one of the A’s with EJ out. He had a few vets he could have given it to like Calvert, Nieto, and Bellemare, but giving it to Kadri lets him know they don’t just think of him as a spare piece. He’s a big part of the team.

Power Play - Looked great but they need to shoot more. Typical first pre-season game though. Like some of the new setups and breakouts they were trying.

Burakovsy - Didn’t think he was that bad in this game. Definitely some off plays, especially early on but he was a little better in the second. Liked seeing that he gave second and third efforts for loose pucks on a few plays. Wasn’t expecting that. That’s a big thing for me in general, but it’s also a positive sign that he may fit in well with Bednar’ system, because he really wants to see his guys pressuring puck carriers. Still getting used to Bednar’s system, but he needs to find another level to his game, and some more in game consistency.

Donskoi - He’s gonna be such a good fit on this Avalanche team. Such great speed and handles the puck real well, even in full flight. Like to see him work on his shot a bit maybe, but we’ll see if that improves. Showing that chemistry with Kadri that he put on display in training camp. If they maintain that chemistry, the coaches are gonna have an interesting decision to make when Mikko gets back (hopefully) as to who to bump down between Jost and Burakovsky. Both guys they wanted to give bigger roles to at the start of the season.

Calvert - Liked his passing in this game. Had a few nice ones, even off the rush through a bit of traffic. I wonder if he worked on his puck skills over the summer? Seemed to have a better touch with the puck. Hopefully he worked on his shot for sure, but if he improved his puck skills that would be a nice bonus. Looked to be skating laterally a little better too which will help him.

MacKinnon - Played well. Still getting his timing back. Amazing what a high level athlete he is. Already so noticeably in better shape and explosive than everyone else on the ice. He must absolutely crush those off season workouts with O’Brien.

Landy - Solid game. Just getting his timing back like the other vets. Liked his tone setting, hard working first shift a lot. Just what you would expect from a captain like him. Even looked like he might drop the gloves early, but thankfully decided his gloves should stay glued on in pre-season.

Nichuskin - Played ok. Still has that power move to the net. Like to see him a bit involved in the play more but solid first game. If he can take it to another level, he might have a bounce back season.

Kaut - Looked better in this game but faded late like the rest of the team. Was finding the shooting areas a lot better but I still wish he was more engaged in the game. Can you imagine if he added a physical element to his game? He needs to get closer to the net when he shoots though at least. His shot is good, but it’s not good enough right now for him to be shooting from that far out.

Alt - Played ok but got burnt on the Dallas 1st goal.

Rosen - Liked his passing on the breakout in this game. Still need to see more to judge, but he could bump Barberio as a #7D if he can find another gear here in pre-season.

Girard - Good game as usual. Skating well, moving the puck well, working hard defensively, even throwing his body around. Love that he decides to put a guy into the glass every once in a while too. They never expect it haha. Great move and outlet pass to setup Bellemare's goal. What a spin o rama in the corner to put the guy on his butt too. So dirty. He’s gonna break so many ankles in his career.

Makar - He’s ratcheted up his wrist shot. It was good before but it is heavy as hell now too. He let a few rockets go that landed with audible thuds. Also nailed the one timer pass to MacKinnon’s wheel house, I think first try in the game. Just like that clip we saw earlier in camp, it looks like we could see a big improvement there. Even though he took a penalty I loved seeing him out muscle that guy to the front of the net. To men that’s still a good hockey play. Looks like he might have put on some nice upper body strength over the summer.

Byram - Thought he was better in this game even though he played a part in the two goals against. Kept things simple but also showed a few flashes of brilliance out there. That close up of him circling the net and surveying the entire ice the whole time, looking at every single one of his options, was beautiful to watch. Also that play where he took a rocket pass off the boards with I think two forecheckers on him, while I thought he was gonna get creamed. Instead he just looked up real quick, then calm as hell went forehand backhand deking the guy out, and took the puck to the red line and dumped it in, while evading the other forecheckers hit. Outstanding play by an 18 year old. Still getting used to defending in the NHL though. Had a couple plays he could do better on, and also for the second game in a row he could have had a more active stick on the first goal to knock the puck away. Also Didn’t pick up the man circling towards the wall as he tried to rim the puck out. Which resulted in the turnover, and then he deflects the puck in with his glove. Another teachable moment for him. Lets see if he keeps improving but these defensive moments may keep him out of the NHL this year if they keep happening. Two goals in two games though, that’s a positive.

We lost!? Haha. Oh well. I guess I can’t be mad at the shot differential. We seemed in control for the entire two periods I watched just couldn’t finish. That won’t last.

Put Donskoi with Nate and Landy.

Our power play is going to be so nasty when Mikko comes back and takes Burakovsky’s spot There were 4 players snapping the puck around out there like they’ve been playing together for a decade and it was their first ever time playing as a unit. Then there was Burakovsky slowing the momentum down and playing a completely different game than the other 4 on the unit.

I think Burakovsky has some nasty skill but if he spends anymore time with Mackinnon I have a feeling Nate is going to start shooting the puck at him to try to hurt him.

So it feels like that our "We can shoot but we can't score" mantra is still alive. Great. Making the other teams goalie look like worldbeaters was kind of our thing last season.

Not going to sit here and tell you I watched the game but really we lost. The Stars field a F squad and all we muster up is 1 goal. Yikes. I mean I saw the stats and we must have been dominating play, shot advantage was ridiculous, so what happened? Did we just check out because it's preseason, too fancy, hot goalie for Dallas?
