Rielly was a 5th overall, and still spent a year in the WHL after his draft. I think Liljegren and Sandin both follow a more Dermott-like approach, and don't make the team full time this year. They may come up for a game or two, but not enough to burn an ELC year.

Rielly was also injured most of his draft year, so it's not really a great example. D+1 year was for him to get back on track. Chances are if he was healthy, he would have made the jump right away.

I kind of hope the reason Durzi may go back, outside of not being ready, is so Sandin joins the marlies I think him a lilly should be a pair all season and maybe next and end up a pair for the leafs chemistry is unreal with them.

The only reason I don't want Durzi to go back is the complaining about the pick and the "no 2nd rnd has ever gone back for their overage year"(or whatever the theory is to tear down durzi) narrative

There's no room for Sandin really either though. The main reason why Durzi would not make the Marlies is because they already have 8 defensemen there. I am sure he would be passable enough to give him a chance without sending him back for his OA year, but going back for his OA year opens up a roster spot on the Marlies for him + gives him far more ice time. After this year, the only guys still left on the Marlies may be Holl, one of Rosen/Borgman and possibly Nielsen/Subban (but honestly, I see the Leafs trading both over the course of the year). The rest should either be gone or in the NHL.

LD: Rosen/Borgman, Nielsen, Sandin, (Gordeev), (Kral)
RD: Holl, Lindgren, Subban, (Durzi), (Hollowell), (Kral), (Rasanen)

I realize it wasnt Durzis first draft year as he was skipped the first time around but he was injured alot of the year last year he only played 40 games.

Rielly only played 18 + 5 playoffs games. Durzi played 40 + 11. That's a pretty big gap.

McGregor named captain in Sarnia, team website has him up to 177 (IIRC we drafted him at ~6' 160)

Good for him. Still not sure if he's going to earn a contract though. Seems to be a defensive type forward and defensive prospects do not seem to get much love on the Leafs. Desrocher, Mattinen and Middleton were all let go, but maybe defensive forwards get the benefit of the doubt. He's going to need to get a good amount over a PPG and win a ton of draws if he wants to make it as a defensive forward though (and of course be one of the best defensive forwards out there too).

I think McGregor may be our most slept on prospect. I think he could turn into a real solid C one day. Not top 6 but really we already have those more then covered. He, Stotts, Brooks and SDA are our only real C prospects.

In my experience, it generally takes a very special defenceman to be NHL ready at 18. Ekblad did it, but regressed. Most of the solid D+1 defenders are late birthdays. I actually can't think of many positive examples of defenders who developed in the CHL from 16 on who developed into elite NHLers. Most of the good examples are guys like Doughty who was a late-birthday with 3 years experience. The other high-end Canadian defenders such as Pietrangelo, and Subban. The only real big exception is Brent Burns, who had such a strange development path its hard to identify why it worked.

Marlies open their training camp today. Justin Peters and Kyle Cumisky are on try-outs it looks like along with a couple other players. Durzi and Hollowel are also there.

I'm happy with that. Given his size, 10-13 min vs. men is better than 16-20 vs. boys for development, IMHO.

For sure.

I believe he's the youngest player on the team by about 5 years as well.

So you mean people were irrationally freaking out when he wasn’t give minutes in his first few games in the league?

I’m shocked I tell you

I now have a hard time seeing a path wherein he both decides to and is good enough to come to the NHL and become an impact player.

His plan was to come over for next season. That could always change, but right now he's expected to be a Marlie next year

... Korshkov himself?

He said when he signed the 1 year deal, he wanted to spend 1 more year in the KHL to hopefully play a big role before coming over. He said the Leafs management weren't ecstatic with the decision, but understood it and were okay with it.

Pretty sure he has maintained that he isn’t coming to North America until he has accomplished his goal of playing a big role with his Russian club.

It is the same position he had last year as well. No change.
