Is there a big difference between USHL hockey and University hockey? How would you compare them? USHL players are younger (?) but how about the style of play etc.?

I would say so, the USHL is more like junior in terms of hockey with more physical play and fights and whatnot. What seperates it from the CHL is the heavy emphasis on defense.The USHL has long been considered a defensive league which is why even the best prospects stats are lower there such as Gagner, Carlson, Moore when they played in that league.The NCAA is much more fast paced hockey , run and gun style of hockey where skill thrives. There are stronger players obviously due to the ages of the players and the work-out programs. There is also a suspension for fighting in this league and players wear full cages. Because it is a skilled league teams often advise players they pick which route is best for them. There was and arguemnt which James Van Riemsdyk going to New Hampshire and the NCAA in general over Brampton of the OHL because JVR is built for a power forward roll in the NHL and he would better learn to play a physical style playing in the OHL. Not to mention New Hampshire where he played plays in is an olympic ice surface . Lukily he turned out alright developed his skills, and is learning to use his body slowly in the NHL.

So, it was about three years ago when people started to talk about Granlund, Rajala, Pulkkinen etc 91-92 born prospects. Do we have any info on the 95-96 born players? 93-borns are a potential age group (Salomäki, Granlund, Aaltonen, Niemitalo, Salminen just to name a few), 94-borns seem to be another off-year for us...but what about the 95 or 96-borns? Any names to follow? How those age groups look in general, compared to 91-93borns, at this point?

Artturi Lehkonen & Jonatan Tanus are the two top players of -95's. Statswise, they both are very close to RGP at the same age. Tanus is also the captain of his team altought he's one year younger than most players in his team.

Then there is Joose Antonen, Juuso Ikonen, Sasha Barkov, Oskari Ojanen, Niklas Lehtimäki, Jere Friberg, Sami Anttila, Aleksi Mustonen, Timi Lahtinen, Mikael Vihriälä, Julius Valtonen, Robin Kokkonen ect.

95's are definetly up there with 91-92's.

From 96's the top players are Kalpa juniors Miikka Pitkänen & Kasperi Kapanen (son of Sami Kapanen) & Mikko Rantanen (TPS). Like tormentor mentioned.

Then there is Miro & Atte Mäkinen (Jokerit) & Antton Mönkäre (GrIFK).

Seems to be quite promising age group also, but we will see...

From these players I’ve so far seen Jonatan Tanus, Juuso Ikonen, Sami Anttila, Sasha Barkov, Aleksi Mustonen, Saku Kinnunen, Niklas Lehtimäki, Janne Puhakka, Reko Tornberg and Janne Koponen. They are all good prospects, but IMO not quite as good as Rajala, Pulkkinen and Granlund were at the same age.

I haven’t seen Artturi Lehkonen, Joose Antonen, Jere Friberg and Arttu Seppänen yet. Judging by his PPG production Lehkonen could be a similar youth star as Rajala, Pulkkinen and Granlund were. I would like to hear about him, if someone has seen him play…

One player from this age group that I really like is Eetu Koivistoinen; a big, strong and skilled forward from Espoo Blues.

There seems to be a lot of promising goalies in this age group and some of them are already playing on a good level in Jr.C;

I briefly saw both Ville Husso and Kevin Lankinen play last weekend, and I must say that they both looked like very promising goalies. Both are athletic, quick and already play on a high level. It's fairly certain that this age class won't have problems with finding a good goalie for the national team as there are several promising goalies available.

He's certainly one of the most promising 94-born Finnish forwards that I've seen so far this season. He's an intelligent player offensively and one thing that really stood out from his game was his passing skills, they are great. Nice accurate saucer passes straight from skating and even when under pressure. His one-on-one skills are also pretty good and one can imagine that his game will improve considerably once he gets more muscle to that somewhat skinny frame. Personally I see Teräväinen's potential to be higher than for example Miro-Pekka Saarelainen's or Oskari Lehtinen's, simply because of the higher skill level and the fact that he can improve a lot physically.

The kid has phenomenal strength considering his age, really powerful skater on a straight line. I don't know about his wrist shot, but at least his slap shot is thundering. From what I've seen, 94-born age group has the best defensive crop in years. There are plenty of fairly promising defensemen that are already over 180cm tall, Piisinen being one of them.

Tokoi and Dufva

Both are now back in Finland. I know that Dufva's return had something to do with a hip injury but don't know much about Tokoi. Any news about his time in PEI?

In the end it's not that big of a surprise that he didn't succeed in NA, he was just an average prospect in Finland without much experience of playing in Jr.A. After his return he has played 6 games with Ilves Jr.A team, no points and he’s -4.

Interesting to look back at this. All of those guy became fairly successful, except Seppänen and Auria. Maybe there is something to this stats scouting thing.
