Good point, the thing is I've visited there many times and I was thinking of the tourists who don't want to fight the traffic but still want to see 'old' downtown Vegas. This is especially true since the remake of Fremont Street- blocked traffic streets, zip line, overhead video, etc, etc.

I was in Las Vegas for a convention earlier this summer. The convention was in Mandalay Bay and I stayed at Luxor. I found the whole experience to be a little dumpy and depressing. My buddy was staying at the Cosmopolitan. That was a lot better, but still not great. I had a few pretty darn good meals, there. Apart from the restaurant selection, I really don't understand the appeal. Of course, I was there for work and only for a few days, and only spent time in those three places.

I agree. I was also there for a convention in January and stayed at the Luxor, and the year before at Monte Carlo. I found both in need of a renovation, and of course the Monte Carlo had one. I find Vegas dumpy overall. Homeless people all over the place.

You need to be pretty well lubricated in order for the Strip to start looking anything other than seedy, gaudy, and shallow, IMO. The city itself - with the exception of North Las Vegas, which IIRC is heavily industrial and laced with strip clubs - isn't too bad. Kind of like a Metro Phoenix suburban city with a bit less ambiance.

I mean from a metro perspective, Henderson is a nice area and is a short stent from the strip (20 minutes if I recall, it's been 9 years), providing a great deal of shows and other forms of entertainment. You kind of need to be into the party/gambling scene in order to feel like Vegas is a cool city though, IMO. If your view is from Hollywood movies, you'll be incredibly disappointed. I like Vegas to play blackjack and party, outside of that I have no desire to spend time there.

For the most part I feel painted the city in a negative light as a tourist and not a resident. I'm sure the city has a lot more to offer than that but I'm just not aware of it. I would 100% say that the state has a lot to offer and the landscape throughout Nevada can be stunning. I have desires to visit outside of Vegas, especially as my son gets older and we can do camping/hiking/climbing trips together.

Put it this way, (disclosure, I have a cousin who lives there, well off the strip in the western suburbs) if you were transported without your knowledge (say you fell asleep and someone whisked you to a car), and you woke up in most of the Vegas metro area, it would take a while before you figured out you weren't in the Phoenix metro area.

It would take me two minutes. :)

It all depends on where you are at. Luxor is not a great hotel, in my opinion. I stayed there once and got confused by the whole escalator/inclinator thing (the inclinators go up at an angle in certain parts of the hotel - I got on the wrong one, went through a door that I thought led to the room and wound up in the shopping area of Mandalay Bay).

For the record, the worst hotels to stay at are: Circus Circus, Excalibur, Luxor, and it is probably a tie between Bally's and Tropicana, of the major/most well known places.

I am usually there anywhere between 6 and 10 times per year. I didn't get a chance to go as much this year, unfortunately. Hard to do when 2 months was spent looking for a new job.

Can confirm Ballys sucks. It’s not really too far off the Strip but it is enough where it’s too much walking and too much of a pain to get back to the Strip.

Anything around NY NY is probably good, though I’ve never stayed there. Central location. Right by the hockey arena too.

Before I noticed this post I was thinking for that area "Luxor - ehhhhhh...Excalibur - avoid at all costs.... NYNY - fine... Bellagio ,Mandalay Bay, Cosmo , Caesars - all better"

You hit the nail on the head for worst hotels. Stayed at the Excalibur a few years back and we couldn't get hot water. Many of the hotels/casinos are really dumps. Crazy resort fees, lousy beds and expensive drinks takes the fun out of Vegas. Now they are trying to stick you with parking fees.

I enjoyed eating at the Red Square, and also enjoyed the Irish breakfast at the pub between the Luxor and the Mandalay Bay. Name escapes me now. RiRa? Had a great dinner at the Blue Ribbon at the Cosmopolitan and also Momofuku there.

Do you think now with this new owner, do we have a shot at getting the all star game? Or do you think we would need to build a new stadium? Attendance seems to have done better so far this year in Glendale.

The current stadium is fine for hosting ASG IMO.
