Sometimes the little details can mean a lot.

One of the reasons Pardew ended up loathed at Newcastle was that he embodied a club that didn't seem to think losing mattered. In both the 2012-13 and 2013-14 seasons, NUFC suffered defeats in 19 games out of 38. Uninterested, superficial outside observers only saw that in the latter campaign United had finished 10th. North of the Tyne, everyone noticed poison sinking ever deeper into the club's system.

The habit of being beaten one game in every two continued in 2014-15, and the year after. At last, the dressing room's professional indifference bore its inevitable fruit. If winning is a habit, so is accepting less- as Vincent Kompany noted in an interview this week in which he discussed the mental challenges required of remaining at the summit.

Newcastle United's primary goal this season was to avoid relegation. However, three games and three defeats to average or worse opposition since that aim was achieved sours the admiration I feel for the squad's previously wholehearted effort. If the Spurs and Chelsea games end as per the form guide, that'll be a Pardewesque five straight reverses to end with- and a fifth consecutive top-flight campaign in which half the games have yielded nowt. And it reminds one that a club with a top 10 turnover shouldn't be scrabbling around among the dregs in the first place- at least, not if the club is governed competently.

Maybe the anticlimactic finale is appropriate, given the dismal summer of threadbare lies and wasted opportunities that most probably await. Sadly, it feels like for all Rafa's efforts, too many people on the payroll at NUFC simply aren't worthy of his care and attention. The players may speak about their admiration for the man, and how much they've learned from him- and crucially, their performances up until the final whistle blew against Arsenal give their talk substance. The way they're playing now, alas, they're adding further reason for Benitez to quit while he's ahead.

I haven't exactly followed closely but it seems that Benitez is generally not being criticised for the recent down turn in results. Is that fair>

Great display by Huddersfield today. Only side to shut out City in Manchester this season.

Salah awful awful dive.

Cahill's reaction was pretty remarkable though. Helped him up instead of berating him. Respect.
