I feel like Lafreniere is going to get picked apart by critics this year because he’s been in the limelight so long and is a late ‘01 to boot. Guys like Byfield who are more raw but absolute beasts are going to gain momentum.

That said, I think any thought of Lafreniere not going #1 right now is a mistake. He’s not Crosby and he’s not quite generational and sure he’s not a center but he’s absolutely everything else. He’s just lovely to watch...explosive but graceful, effortless power, scores and play makes in equal fashion, strong on-ice determination and intelligence, picked his game up in the playoffs even more. Truly the heir apparent to the great French-Canadian superstar wingers of the past with a game that would thrive in any era.

There’s going to be a lot of noise as usual and a lot of drummed up hype for competition as the top pick in 2020 but just don’t see how you cannot take this kid as things stand.
I agree with all of the above, but I think it's also fair to raise the bar a little bit for Lafreniere this year. Scouts, after all, are watching him in his 18yo season while Byfield is in his 17yo season. For Lafreniere, it is his third season in CHL and for Byfield just his second. The 18yo season for a player playing his third season in the CHL is very often a breakout year. So, scouts will be looking to see him make those gains that an 18yo normally makes in his third major junior campaign.

Also, for fairness, anybody who is comparing Byfield to Lafreniere should compare Lafreniere's performance last year to Byfield's this year.

Quinton Byfield looks like a guy who's hard to contain the way Eric Lindros was. I think Byfield is a better and more fluid skater, but not as physical as Lindros was.

Lindros was so big and powerful that he could just put his had down and skate as hard as he could and people would just get out of his way... in junior. I think Byfield might have better awareness, as do most player these days. They're taught a heady game throughout their careers now. I would love to pick top 2 to get this guy.
Biggest problem for him when he reached the NHL,he could do this without fear in junior....The NHL not so much

How would you compare his skating to Stranges?

He's a much better skater.

Stranges has that interesting skating style that players like Skinner and Spooner have, but Foudy is a world class skater. He's one of the best skaters in the world. Stranges has improved his skating and is a good skater. That interesting skating style makes his skating more of a discussion point, but in terms of who skates better, I don't know how someone could seriously state that Stranges skates be

Would you say that he is faster AND more agile? Or just faster?

Fun to see Miller on there. Still not sure how I feel about him but something there for sure. Like to see Laff in the HMs. Not sure if he can push into top 70 range but a lot of season left. Tuch seems like a sleeper. IMO Farrell might be peeking ahead of Rolston atm.. still need to see more of all those guys personally

What do you think of Bordeleau? I’ve found that I like him a lot more than the consensus, but I’m always impressed by his play and he’s been the best scorer on the team over two seasons, as well. He’s smaller in stature, but skates very well and competes well. I think he’s very under the radar.

Missed how high you had him when I skimmed. I probably don't have him in that range but I think I like him more than the consensus as well, he does seem a bit under-the-radar. great start to the year and I enjoyed what I saw of him last season. As far as the NHL draft, I'm just not sure. I like to take a few months before crystallizing a position in their draft year, if I had to pin it now I don't think he's a big time pro prospect. Part of why I love the college game is players like that can thrive and be terrific players even if they don't ever realize a big pro upside. I think he's extremely well-suited to the college game.

My list to date. I haven't had the time to watch as many games as I would have liked to begin the year and will see to that in November, with a lighter work schedule to help me.

1 - Lafrenière
2 - Byfield
3 - Raymond
4 - Drysdale
5 - Lundell
6 - Askarov
7 - Perfetti
8 - Lapierre
9 - Holtz
10 - Barron
11 - Stutzle
12 - Gunler
13 - Holloway
14 - Perreault
15 - Poirier
16 - Nikishin
17 - Mysak
18 - Nybeck
19 - Chromiak
20 - Guhle
21 - Bordeleau
22 - Foudy
23 - Zary
24 - Stranges
25 - Amirov
26 - Wallinder
27 - Sanderson
28 - O'Rourke
29 - Smilanic
30 - Cuylle
31 - Knak

I watched maybe a dozen OHL games to date, and quite a few of the Greyhounds' (intrigued by Leguerrier so I'm keeping tabs, he's been better and more offense-oriented than I expected thus far), and a guy that surprised me is Jaromir Pytlik. All the games of Sault Ste. Marie that I saw he starred in. I get that he's a late B-day and all, but he's a big kid that has above-average skating and pretty much the whole packcage of tools and looks to have progressed quite a bit since last year so he could be a second or third-round pick or so, and a good one.

I’ll post my pre-wjc list:
1:Lafrienere - Do-it-all winger. He’s a pedigree player who has done everything there is to do and checked all the boxes required to be considered a very good 1OA pick.
2:Byfield - He’s close to Lafrienere. He’s something like 11 months younger than Laf, and he’s putting up great numbers in the OHL. Players who can skate, handle the puck, and think the game like he can never come in a 6’5 package. He’ll be a real unique player in the league. I really don’t know what his ceiling is because I’ve never seen a player with his exact toolkit.
3:Stutzle - players that produce near a ppg against men in their draft year are a good bet to be studs. Not a stylistic comparison, but his production in the DEL will likely end up being reminiscent to Petterson’s draft production in Allsvenskan, and the DEL is the better league. I think with how skilled Stutzle is with the puck on his stick and how well he skates, that he projects as a center as well. 30+50 potential in the NHL
4:Raymond - He is a bit of a confusing player. His skating is average for a smaller player, which has been getting exposed a bit in the SHL, but I think that when he adds strength it will improve to a very good level. Everything else about his game screams elite. He can think the game; he’s got incredible one on one skill; he can rifle pucks. I wouldn’t be surprised if he ends up being the best point producer from this draft, but I think it’ll take him longer to arrive. The stats are worrisome, though, and contribute to why he’s 4 instead of 3.
5: Rossi - numbers talk. He’s producing at an elite rate in the OHL. The list of players who have done it before him is small: McDavid, Kane, Chelios. It’s pretty good company. He’s one of the smartest player’s I’ve ever seen in terms of understanding where the puck is going to be before it gets there. It’s incredible. The puck always finds him. His skating is meh, but I think his numbers, combined with his skill set project him as a point producing C in the nhl with the odd ppg season here and there. That’s enough for 5oa for me
6: Holtz - Kid is a stud. He can skate at an above average level. His shot is second only to Perfetti in this draft, he thinks the game well. Has above average pucks skills as well as playmaking ability. His ceiling is that of a Filip Forsberg.
7: Drysdale - He’s built in the mold of a new-age defenseman. Glides up the ice better than any draft eligible adman I’ve seen in a long time (hold dahlin). He screams number one defensmen in the NHL, and for that reason I could see him going as high as 4.
8: Perfetti - Elite brain. Elite goal scoring. Production checks out. I’d like to see his skating improve. I think he’s a 2-way, 35 goal guy in the NHL, if he’s developed well.
9: Anton Lundell - Do it all centreman. Nothing about his game wows me, but he has real shutdown abilities that project beautifully to the NHL. His skating and shot all get good grades as well. 30+30 2C in the NHL.
10: Yaro Askarov - I’m no good at evaluating goalies, but everyone thinks this guy is going to be a stud, and every game I’ve watched, he’s stolen.

13:Zary
14:Wallinder

Did you really call Raymonds skating average? He is the best skater in the draft, he has unrivaled speed and edge work. His stats are great, scoring at a better pace than most current swedish stars did at the same age, and his stats look worse because he plays 7 minutes a night on the most stacked team europe has seen in a decade. He would play regular top minutes on another team, and probably break the all time U18 scoring record, something he still has a decent chance to do. The SHL is miles ahead of every other european league and production can't be compared to leagues like the NLA, Liiga or DEL.

As for Stutlze, to me he has higher potential than you said, 100 point potential, he is that good.

Disagree. His skating is just average for an undersized player.

you’ll be hard pressed to find me predicting anyone to be a 100 point player because that would put him in the top few players in the world.

doesnt Pettersson hold the record for u20 scoring in the SHL with 56 points in 44 games? I find it hard to believe Raymond would ever be close to that this year.
