Ottawa's goal this offseason is the floor. They're not going to need to work that hard to reach it.

In addition, a lot of teams want to move salary. Hell, even looking at last offseason, Montreal got Armia+ for only one year left on the contract of a cheaper Mason. You think all it takes is a 2nd rounder to take on 3 years of Alzner? Really?

If it only cost a 2nd to unload Alzner it would have been done already.

It costs way more than that.

I can see a trade like that

    Alzner + 15oa + 77oa

    For

    Gaborik + 19oa + 32oa

    Further to this:

If the cap is under 82 mil, that throws a ton of teams plans out of whack.

I'm sure that these multi-million organization have planned for multi cap-increase scenarios.

You would think that multi-million dollar organizations make sensible plans and yet these same organizations give guys like Karl Alzner almost $5 million per year for 5 years.

Sure, but when a lot of those plans basically rely on other teams taking contracts off their hands, its easier said than done. You need another organizations plans to jive with your own. And you need it follow your timetable too.

Plans go awry all the time too. I'm sure the Jets plan wasn't to move Trouba for Pionk and a mid-late first.

No, but I'm sure that every club has made a contingency plan for a small cap increase. It's literally forecasting 101.

I'm sure even the dumbest of GMs/Management teams have plans for scenarios in which there was a small increase in cap space.

Sure, but how achievable are those plans? Or how good are they? Its easy to just say that they have some plan or contingency. But what does it look like. Like, one of Tampa's many contingencies may be that they let Point sign an offer sheet and let him walk. That achieves the goal of them being cap compliant. But its a garbage contingency. It is incredibly easy to be cap compliant. To achieve that cap compliance exactly how you'd like to is incredibly difficult.

And that contingency may involve dealing a player they would otherwise keep.

I doubt teams are shocked, but I suspect they are displeased.

If he waved his nmc I would take Bobby Ryan for Alzner. Better to add 3m to the cap for an actual player then bury Alzner for 3 years. Melnyk trims payroll by 3m.

Agreed. Niemi lost at least 3 or 4 games on his own and you could argue more. If we get two of those wins and an OT loss from a competent back up we finish ahead of the leafs. People saying MB is an idiot for prioritizing a back up need to think. If the back up can be decent enough to play well in 20+ games and win a fair amount Price can play better for longer and we'll win more games.

It's a big issue and Lindgren isn't going to fix it let's be real. The team has holes and the back up position is a big one. Obviously we need a LHD as well but come on now people.

That game in Tampa where the Habs scored 5 I believe and Niemi could barely stop pucks shot at him from centre ice. I was livid and that should have been his final game as a Hab.

LeBrun on TSN690 said that with speaking to other GMs, Bergevin is asking around about strengthening the left side of the defense.

Trades are somewhat like the draft. If a trade like Trouba is an option to come to Montreal, for such a low price, go get the best player available. Subsequent moves can sort out need. Rangers just took a huge step forward.
