Calle Johansson said today on TV that not selecting Carl Söderberg for this years tournament was a big scandal, he also had a few comments about the coach for not selecting some swedes playing juniorhockey in Canada... :p

Kronblom,
yes it is almost a scandal I must admit. Heck, it would not surprise me if Carl would be the second or third best forward on the team after Alexander Steen :)

By all means a much stronger Swedish team.

I posted this earlier and by all means Canada will be the GOLD medal favourite come Xmas, that is if they can hold a lead next time! :dunno: The Americans should be pretty strong as well with something like 7 or 8 players eligible to return. If there is a lockout in the NHL come September then Canada may as well not even have a selection camp in early December because all the forward spots will basically be accounted for with the return of Burns, Horton and Bergeron.

Looking ahead to next year in North Dakota, will Canada be the heavy favourite to claim gold with an amazing 13 players from this year eligible to return? I would expect only Brent Burns guaranteed not to return for 2005.

Will any other players be in the show and unavailable for the tourney? It's tough to say at this point, but guys like Phanuef, Coburn and Stewart are possibilities?

I would think the roster will look very close to this, with returning players in red;

FORWARDS

Anthony Stewart - 85
Nigel Dawes - 85
Mike Richards - 85
Jeff Carter - 85
Ryan Getzlaf - 85
Brent Burns ?? - 85
Sydney Crosby - 87
Stephen Dixon - 85
Jeremy Colliton - 85
MA Pouliot - 85
Steve Bernier - 85
Corey Perry - 85
Eric Fehr - 85
Wojtek Wolski - 86

HM - Clarke MacArthur - 85, Stefan Meyer - 85, Kyle Chipchura - 86, Gilbert Brule - 87, David Bolland - 86, Daniel Carcillo - 85, Dany Roussin - 85, Benoit Mondou - 85, Alexandre Picard - 85

DMEN

Dion Phaneuf - 85
Shawn Belle - 85
Braydon Coburn - 85
Brent Seabrook - 85
Mike Green - 85
Paul Bissonnette - 85
Cam Barker - 86

HM - Wes O'Neil - 86, Jonathan Paiement - 85

GOALTENDERS

Ryan Munce - 85
Martin Houle - 85

HM - Kevin Nastiuk - 85, Rejean Beauchemin - 85, Dan LaCosta - 86

The 85's were in the relegation playoffs in the U-18 tournament last year, so it's by no means a good year. The 86's, however, won the Viking Cup last week without their top two players (Tukonen and Nokelainen who were at the WJC), so not all hope is lost.

Goalies

Tuukka Rask -87 (2005)
Eero Kilpeläinen -85 (Stars)

Defense

Ville Mäntymaa -85 (Mighty Ducks)
Otto Honkaheimo -85
Mikko Kuukka -85 (2004)
Risto Korhonen -86 (2005)
Teemu Laakso -87 (2005)
Toni Vähämäki -85
Niko Vainio -85 (Stars)

Offense

Lauri Tukonen -86 (2004)
Petteri Nokelainen -86 (2004)
Masi Marjamäki -85 (Bruins)
Teemu Nurmi -85
Arsi Piispanen -85 (Blue Jackets)
Pasi Salonen -85 (2004)
Jesse Saarinen -85
Matti Uusivirta -85
Tuomas Santavuori -85
Ville Vimpari -85
Valtteri Tenkanen -85
Juhamatti Aaltonen -85 (Blues)
Jussi Makkonen -85

The offense most probably won't look anything like that, but I was hesitant to list too many underaged players (Joensuu, Jokila, Seitsonen, Uronen, ...) and do not know enough about possible 85-born role players.

If the Wild pick another player from Canada and he happens to be on the list, he'll go instead of Burns.

Van, aren't the following also able to return for team USA:

Matt Hunwick
Jeff Likens
Jake Dowell
Drew Stafford

Vicari is an 84.

Yes, Vicari is...my bad via the IIHF's first published rosters.

And you are correct on the rest as well (Likens was already on my list). They were all listed as 1984's when the IIHF first released rosters. I was banking on their information being accurate.

Stupid question but both Carter and Stewart turned 19 during the tourney, which means they'll turn 20 during next year's tourney..looks like they are still eligible but what is the cutoff date?

Anybody born in 1985 or later is eligible for the 2005 World U20 Championship.

The only name I could add off the top of my head is Mike Brown. I wonder if the CHL presence will be a little higher next year? A guy like Bobby Ryan would be a welcome addition.

Zach Fitzgerald out of the Seattle Thunderbirds might be a guy USA Hockey could look at for 2005 WJC. And if Dustin Byfuglien from the PG Cougars ever gets in shape he may get a look from USA Hockey this summer.

That, and he needs to step up his game. He simply hasn't played to expectations this season. Also, he needs to get his head in the game. Hockey isn't life to Byfuglien, it never has been. It has always been a hobby for him. For Byfuglien to represent his country, hockey needs to become life for him.

I´d have to agree. BIG SCANDAL!!! I can´t understand HOW its possible to miss him. Instead Torgny decided to test players like Tobias Tschöp and David Fredriksson. OMG!

Which channel btw did Calle comment about this:)

Even if they don't, I would be surprised if Burns was released again. I really, really doubt he'll be back.

These are a few guys who might make the team... (no OHL guys, but only because I don't follow them)

Defense
Matt Nickerson
Jack Hillen
Jack Johnson (stretch, he's an 87, but he's heavily hyped)

Forward
Darin Olver
Chad Kolarik
Kevin Porter
Chris Borque
Tom Frische
Jack Skille (87, stretch)

your picks are pretty good. I don't think Hennessy will get picked, and I think the US is going to tell Schremp to stuff it.

I'd like to see a guy like Bobby Ryan make the USA squad, they won't be as strong as they were this year, so if he keeps at his current pace he should be able to crack the lineup.
